Debut trailer for RESET is out - Jaws will drop

Intriguing, certainly.
Would have liked more actual gameplay, but I suppose from a pre-Alpha, that's maybe a bit much to ask.

Hmm, it's seems you play co-op with yourself using time travel.

The Game

Reset is a single player co-op first person puzzle game with a strong emphasis on story and atmosphere. The unique game mechanic in Reset is the ability to travel back in time to solve puzzles co-operatively, with yourself.

hehe

It's nice to get a bit of perspective on what is actually possible in 2012 when competent developers focus on current specs [with limited scope] instead of 2005 hardware. That this is done by two Finnish indie guys is just all the more impressive.

Gonna be honest, that close up of the computer screen with the water on it threw me for a loop. I wonder if that level of detail will even be noticeable in the final game?

The tech in that trailer was great. Fuck you guys.

It's extremely great. But how often does amazing tech actually translate into fantastic gaming experiences? Every single generation there's fantastic looking tech demos, but I beg, how many games have actually been released that fulfills and utilizes the tech in a satisfying way?

Some of the most amazing looking games this gen like Uncharted are frequently called out because there's too much emphasis on visuals and cinematic aspects and shallow gameplay that isn't even the best of its genre.

So I can totally understand the reluctance in the thread so far. It is incredible and astonishing stuff, but I think people are finally starting to tire out on how great something looks because going by history they know deep down that the actual game design is much more important. At this point it's just studios flaunting how much better their shit looks than other shit but when it comes down to it, how great is the actual software that comes out of it?

Mikko Kallineni is the single programmer behind this. His roots are in Amiga demo scene, and later worked on 3D Mark demos. I recognized the name <3

The game itself they say is:

Sounds like those puzzles in one of the newer R&C games.

At least 50% of the time I'd say, with Uncharted actually being a great example. I find it odd that it would make sense to dismiss a game based on how great it looks.

I love the Uncharted games, but mainly because I like what they represent -- pulp serials akin to Indiana Jones. If I were to grade them on gameplay merits they wouldn't do so hot. They play competently and have good single player story modes, but there's a lot of little technical issues concerning the gameplay that really add up. Uncharted 3 looked incredible, but it was hard to acknowledge this when fighting with something as simple as the aiming controls.

Anyway, just one man's opinion. I'm just saying that I find it totally reasonable to see people beyond really caring about how incredible the visuals are, especially after this gen.

I wouldn't expect such extreme closeups to be noticeable during gameplay, no. But having this sort of quality textures in the game opens up seamless cuts and camera sweeps in cutscenes, (without having to bother with quality differences or video compression like in most modern games with prerendered in-engine cutscenes). I'm sure they're eager to show off their work in the final game, so these little details won't go unnoticed.

Skepticism is a natural psychological reaction when things seem too good to be true. :D

In the future....

There will only be one kind of tree

Its a good trailer I guess, but getting hyped over trailers just doesn't do it anymore

awful trailer, i mean wtf is up with those trees, im fairly certain grees don't grow like that lol, looked stupid, shouldve done it like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtHjmYowv8Y

This is probably the dumbest piece of gaming tech I've ever seen implemented in a game. Who is going to play the same game for 5 years to see a tree regrow?! Oh it grows back faster than in real life? Ok. That makes this tech even dumber. Seriously.

As an engine demo that looks really good. Intrigued by the setting, but want to see some gameplay before I pay any more attention.

The tech was impressive no doubt but without any gameplay it just didn't do anything for me personally.

This post sums my feelings quite well.

The game involves time travel so most likely this tech is related to that.

Appreciate it for what it is. Save your judgement until you actually play it, and maybe instead encourage the developers to create a game that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Portal. Everyone is all of a sudden a bunch of gaming hipsters who are above anything that doesn't show gameplay and is immediately dismissive or totally skeptical. Is this what we've become?

It's a PC exclusive so I wouldn't expect next-gen consoles to look anywhere close to this. I mean most people in this thread are mistaking it for cgi.

It's a PC exclusive right now. We all know how that can change when new consoles arrive. Especially considering this game is probably a full year or more away from release.

Also, I think you're greatly underestimating the next gen consoles if you don't think they'll be capable of producing graphics like we see in this trailer.

So they can render some cool looking stuff with no gameplay on controlled equipment. So basically it might as well be CG because the trailer isn't any indicator of how the game will look or perform.

Not that it won't end up awesome, but we can't make any judgement based on that trailer.

Really impressive trailer. Can't wait to find out more about it. It's nice when a trailer is more subtle than having explosions every seconds. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that.

Every single person who dropped in for a comment on "Another CG trailer" should get a ban IMO.

Tech looks sweet as hell. Its funny how differently I look at this kind of stuff and how much more exciting it is since I got a beast mode rig.

The trailer almost certainly showed what will be a gameplay mechanic. From the description, you'll be manipulating time, and most likely not just a few seconds/minutes back and forth but years and years, so you'll see weather change, trees grow and die and scenery crumble and decay, so you'll use those scenery changes to solve puzzles.
