man i saw them for the white pony tour, i think i was like 16? i will always remember that experience. lead singer crowd surfed to the bar and grabbed a drink. that album was just perfection!

This is their best album since White Pony, without doubt. I'd argue it's actually more coherent, consistent and better realised.

The likes of Diamond Eyes, Royal, You've seen the Butcher, Beauty School and Risk are without peer. Deftones prove yet again to be indefatigable.

Wow to the guy saying it sounds like Slipknot and Disturbed... really not at all.

During the Adrenaline and ATF days they got lumped with the nu-metal scene, but they were always more creative and showing their influences more (the Cure, Depeche Mode, Helmet).

Then White Pony came out and honestly from that moment on everyone who still compared them to the nu-metal stuff could be laughed off. That is one of the most experimental records that still manages to keep its shit together I've ever heard. Easily one of my favorite records of the past decade.

ST and Saturday Night Wrist you could def. hear the band falling apart, they even admitted that much. ST was at least still cohesive, but SNW was recorded in years so it really was all over the place.

Now with Diamond Eyes recorded very fast and with them all in the same room, it's really cohesive and 'one', for a lack of better terms. It has great tunes, diversity and of course sounds nothing at all like those other bands mentioned. Great thing is Chino is really in shape again and because of that his vocals are back on the level of the White Pony days. It's terrible that the accident of Chi (their bass player - still in a sort of coma) had to happen for them to get on this level again but its good that they can get something positive out of all that. That takes some guts.

In the 20+ years they've been doing this shit they definitely created their own sound and style and they pretty much defy all genres. Had the pleasure to meet them a few times and hanging around with them in a coffee shop (I live in the Netherlands so whenever they tour here I'm sure to hang out in the local drugs shop cause I just KNOW they're going to be there before the concert, and what do you know, they always show up) and they're the most down to earth guys I've ever met.

Even though Chino says 'you know what I'm saying' 100 times a minute. haha.

Great new interview here btw: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/inte..._reconnect_more_as_friends_and_as_a_band.html

Really, for anyone not knowing the 'Tones, just check it out. Don't consider it throwaway (nu-)metal, they really have this bland of violent and sexy music that's held in the highest regard by music critics all over the world. Do yourself a favor and check out White Pony, it's their career-defining record. Give it some time, quite a few listens so you can explore the soundscape of the record and before you know it, it works its way inside your head. For their harder music, check out Around the Fur.

I'm positive Diamond Eyes will gain them a lot of new fans. I'm not an insecure teenager so I'm happy for them. This band deserves all the fame it can get.

Awesome post

Funn you say sexy music because I've run into a lot of Deftones fans who've said their music is actually great to have sex to :lol

Digital Bath is a pretty intense song to bone to...just sayin.

yeah, they are one o the few bands that each album stands on it's own. SNW I thought was great, and Kimdracula one of my favorite Deftones songs. One of the most powerful, for sure. ST took me a while to enjoy, but now it's one of my favorites.

As far as shows, they have been the worst and best shows I have seen. The white pony tour with taproot was horrible. The bass was too overpowering, and knife party sounded like shit. But they played a legendary show at Austin music hall for SNW. Their self titled show in San Antonio was good too.

I have been listening to diamond eyes all weekend. Deftones, and monster hunter.

A friend that lives in Amsterdam is seeing them soon. I might fly back to Boston for this tour though.

yeah dunno if I said this already but Im not going to the concert in Amsterdam. Im in LA that exact week goddamn :lol but Ive seen them live four times already so who am I to complain.

I dunno, Ive watched a lot of youtube clips of their perfomance this year and they've def. improved. they put a lot of effort in it now, they seem happy and fit, chino's screams are better than the past couple of years... yeah.

about the sex thing: yea people call white pony THE album to have an orgy on haha.

but Diamond Eyes... man Im so happy, surprised and relieved this record is so good. every song just clicks, and they all click together. I have a song of the record stuck in my head every day. scrap that, every hour. I just cant decide which song is the best (although I think it must be Royal, You've Seen the Butcher or Sextape).

I'm a long time fan and i'm pretty disappointed by this one. Especially after SNW. That shit was incredible and even topped white pony for me...though nobody seems to like it as much as I do.

How the hell did I miss this thread?

Deftones is my favourite band of all time and this album was just epic. Amazing music all around. Standout tracks for me are probobably Beauty School, Sextape and Royal.
I have got to see them if they visit Australia.

Hopefully, Chi gets better soon. As much as Diamond Eyes was a great refreshing sound for me, I'd love to Chi shred it up on his bass again. Visit http://oneloveforchi.com/ and help him out.

Listening to it some more I'm starting to like it a bit better, but it's strange how different my opinion is from others in this thread. I don't like "Beauty School" at all, the chorus sounds just really whiney to me. And I absolutely hate "Diamond Eyes", it doesn't sound anything like Deftones, which is extra disappointing because Deftones' album openers have always been among the best tracks. In fact, except for "Royal" I find the first half of the album really disappointing, then from "Prince" and on it starts to get better and better.

Still, my least favorite Deftones album yet. :(

There are 3 more songs that are exclusive to iTunes.

"Caress" is pretty good.

yeah, all covers though. pretty cool stuff but Im glad they don't put that stuff on the record. it's perfect like it is.

in ten years we'll get our b-sides & rarities part 2 :D

I came into this thread and was surprised to see them lumped in as nu-metal. What the fuck? They just sound like an alternative punk band or something. Experimental on things like White Pony.

What the fuck? They don't sound ANYTHING like Slipknot or any other nu metal. At all. At all.

Which is a damn good thing.

They've always dabbled in a sort of spacey sound, as Chino did with Team Sleep.

A couple of songs on this ablum are very Team Speak-esque.

I can't imagine trying to fuck a girl to the tune of My Own Summer. :lol

I think a big part of it is how a lot of Chino's lyrics are REALLY sexual in nature. Listen to You've Seen The Butcher and even Elite for how loud it is. Pretty much every song on Diamond Eyes is some kinda abstract sex related song or references a woman/relationship. It's been like this since Around The Fur.

This is kinda my first deftones album, I bought it for my wife, she is the one who loves them. I really like it so far, apparently my wife told me that they are going to be playing near us in Oct. I think I will try and go see them. Has anyone heard and new news on their bass player?

He's at home now, his mother and sister are taking care of him I believe. He's still in some semi-conscious state.

I listen to the cover for diamond eyes and think that it's very different from their songs.
When they do that it's like another band but that can be pretty viable on his own.

I am with you, I have listened to this album several times but I just cant get into it at all. It's weird because I really like everything else they have done, even SNW and the Team Sleep stuff.

just got the album from amazon about a week ago. wow great album! i liked saturday night wrist but didn't really like the self titled album before it. white pony is a classic. this album reminds me of white pony.

i wonder when we'll see the album they scrapped before releasing this one? i assume it isn't as good but i'm still curious to hear it!

I don't think they scraped it so much as didn't release it since their bassist was in a coma.

I saw them live several weeks back in Austin, and it was one of the greatest shows I have been to. A great setlist, from all across their discography.

Saw them as well in early October as part of the Blackdiamondskye tour. Great show and Chino's pretty solid now that he's sobered up for the most part. Still has trouble hitting those high notes (Maynard's lines) in Passenger though :lol

They didn't play anything off self-titled or Saturday Night Wrist which was kinda lame. Lots of stuff from the first two albums as well as White Pony and Diamond Eyes though.

I'm not that big on Adrenaline TBH. A little too rap-rock'ish for my own taste nowadays. Diamond Eyes is great though, amazed that they have stayed relevant from their days of being lumped in with all the nu-metal trash.
