Destiny makes $500 million in first 24 hours

The fact that Xmas orders will be massive for Destiny too no doubt.. could be looking at a Billionaire sell-in by 2015, that would be mental as fuck (in a great way).

Activision usually announces day one numbers as well, I'm assuming that it probably did not break a million on day one, but it probably has by now.

The initial contract that came out of the courts said that Destiny would be timed exclusive to the Xbox One and 360. Something happened between that time and between its unveiling that allowed it to not only go to PS platforms, but to become heavily associated with those platforms.

HALO 5 will eclipse this, and all being well will live up to the hype...well a lot closer at the very least than this game did, judging by impressions from another thread.

Mirosoft has to be kicking themselves in the ass for not funding this.

Kudos to Activision... looks like they found their other pillar.

If only people got to play the game before buying. Oh...

Yeah, because a "beta" is supposed to be representative of the full experience right?

I don't really understand the comments that people should've known the entire game would be like this based on the beta.

Games usually aren't exactly the same at hour 20 as they are at hour 2. They tend to change and introduce new mechanics, mission types, etc.

I had fun with the beta and expected the final release to actually go somewhere, not have the exact same mission structure for the entire game. And at the time lots of people kept saying, "It's only a beta!" to imply that the full game would do more. Plus there is some trust in Bungie (with their stellar track record) do have done a better job.

It bothers me that the defenders during beta would say to not be so harsh because it's just a beta. And the defenders at release would say it's your own fault because beta told you everything you needed to know about how the entire game would be.

Whatever I guess.

The base shooting gameplay is fun, even for someone who doesn't normally like shooters (me), but the structures around it could use some work. They have a good base to build on with DLC/sequels though. Destiny kind of seems like it will end up being the Assassins Creed 1 of the franchise.

D3: UEE

Amazing how well this game is doing. I can see it only getting stronger as more content is added. I wonder why everyone is expecting a GOTY edition though. I haven't seen one for any of the CODs, but maybe I'm just missing something. I see the base game dropping in price, but the expansion packs are going to remain stagnant for a while.

Well, if there isn't a sequel and they just do something like this:

Destiny launches with Expansion Pass 1 now.
Destiny Complete 1 releases at when Expansion Pass 2 launches.
Destiny Complete 1+2 releases at when Expansion Pass 3 launches.
...

Basically, people that jump down the line will just need to buy the latest bunch of DLCs.

The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.”

christ... he talks money... the sole purpose of any of this was coldly calculated to make money. He advertised hearthstone and then reiterates Activision Blizzards franchises as major sellers just so people can buy their stock. wow. this is an art.

still though, crediting Activision as the creator of the franchise feels wrong, who owns the IP of destiny? Activision or bungie?

Bungie.

Activision just published.

No way in hell Halo even comes close to eclipsing this. If it was on every platform maybe but no way in hell it will come close to that. It would take pretty much every Xbone owner to buy it right out the gate for it to stand a chance.

Yeah, because a "beta" is supposed to be representative of the full experience right?

Are you suggesting that people should base their buying decision on reviews by strangers on the internet rather than buying a game they already played with their friends and found to be fun?
You seem to take this far more serious than you should. If you don't want to play the game, go ahead, don't buy it.

I guess Cliffy B is eating some seriously delicious crow. Wasn't he referring to Destiny when he made those remarks?
I'm happy for bungie.. But Kotick just got richer... Mixed feelings.

Bungie is just an amazing developer. Didn't think they could re-create a hit as big as Halo but they're proving me wrong. No wonder Sony is treating this game internally like a first party release. If only Guerilla Games was 10% as good.

Microsoft's biggest mistake was letting these guys go. They should've recognized their talent and said, you know what, make whatever the hell you guys want to make and we'll be on board.

MS is just really short sighted in that way, they seem to be stuck with the same IP's instead of taking any risks (not that letting bungie make something different was a risk). MS fucked up and they must be feeling it right now. They should have been fostering there first party line-up instead if spending obscene amounts on kinect or 2 billion dollars buying mojang.

Halo 5? lol

good luck with that being on one platform and the lower selling one at that.

No way in hell Halo 5 comes close, not locked down to one platform and that platform being the XB1.

Aren't these worrying numbers for Activision? It means if they sell every copy they sent to retailers, they make $500 million in revenue. I'm assuming that to be profitable they will need to at least double that. Being in a situation where selling every copy you shipped doesn't get you to profitability seems very dangerous. One caveat could be that they undershipped. Maybe 8 million is all they could ship for launch and there's another 8 million on the way for week two.

well considering Activision gave Bungie the budget for 3 games and the first one has pretty much made its money back I don't think they are worried at all.

Haters still saying thats sold in not sold out.

lol they still made their investment back, and all those copies will sell for the holiday as well
It's not about hating anything, but it's a matter of fact. There's a reason there is a difference.

Not saying this isn't impressive especially for a new IP, but it's just ridiculous to label people haters because they note that it's not sell through.

Uhm, it is generally wise to listen to people who have played through the whole game or at least most of it. A beta hardly tells much.
edit:
Not that it's wrong to buy the game anyway obviously, but as nynt9 pointed out, your assertion that people got to play the game is kind of irrelevant (and that was what he was saying by the way).

Judging by such impressions, you could say Smash 4 will eclipse this. But it doesn't work that way seriously.

For Halo 5 to eclipse this, it would have to sell something like over 10 million easily at launch.

Not quite, Halo 5 has a lot of factors working against it.

- Being exclusive to one platform
- Being exclusive to the worse selling platform
- Competing against Uncharted 4, RotTR, & the Division

Assassins creed 1 was disliked by many and now we get two in a year.

Funny how AC1 ts probably the worse but the one I had the best experience with (initially since that game is repetitive as hell).

Its just sad that so much money is poured on such uninspired games.

I'm amused there were people actually doubltful they would pull it off. Activision will make their money back and will come out quite profitable. Destiny 2 confirmed basically.

Activision showed they know their market more than doubters do and Sony hitched themselves onto the right pony.
