Destiny will not use Kinect, in favor of improved resolution

So 10% is the new secret sauce? The resolution limitations has to do with the small amount of esram. This sounds like typical MS PR bullshit.

Kinect's on life support TBH. Unbelievable they didn't ditch it with the Xbox One and match Sony's $399 price tag doing so.

Yes, they're really scrambling to undo the damage caused by the former management. I think they're doing a good job, all things considered, but they had a deep hole to climb out of.

All for it as long as I dont lose any of Kinect's voice command functions in game.

Kinect voice commands is seriously one of the main reasons I'm content with my XB1 right now and not having a PS4.

Do you think Phil would have made his feelings public if he didn't like the direction the XB1 was taking last year?

He probably would have just left and became an executive at another tech company. His resume is such that finding another comparable job could be done in basically hours instead of days.

Spencer, like everyone else at MS during the R&D of the system, clearly bought into their own hype far, far too much. It's kicked them square in the ass and he's the guy who has to clean up the mess.

Now it goes one of two ways. He either rights the ship and slips by the PS4 late in each system's life for a solid rebound, likely netting him serious cred within MS and moving him up the food chain, or he fails to do so, the X1 languishes in 2nd or 3rd, and the brand is spun off to someone else after this generation.

Kaz Hirai pulled off the former last gen with the PS3 and now runs all of Sony as a result. Spencer is in a pretty comparable position, though without many of the benefits (weaker 1st party than Sony had at the time, a legitimate and un-bridgeable performance gap while the PS3 was simply a PITA to code for, immediate lockout in Japan, and decades of Sony control to contend with in Europe). He's got a hard fight ahead of him. We'll see if he's up to the task.

Interesting.

I am all for this, as I love the Kinect for UI navigation, but want increased resolution as well.

Sucks though, means people won't be able to say "Record that" while playing Destiny.

I'm not so sure about that. 80% of the resources go into skeletal detection for gesture, so a simple voice command to say Xbox Record that, or Xbox play music, may still be in there. We'll see.

Of course voice commands wild still work.. a lot of people use voice just for online chat so yea.. this is obviously just for the advanced camera features like skeletal recognitiom

It's incredibly naive to think there weren't people on the Xbox team that did not like the direction they were taking with the Xbox One. Almost everyone is on a team at some point in their life where they don't agree with the leaders decisions, but that doesn't mean they always jump ship and go somewhere else in protest.

We have no idea what Phil Spencer thought of the original XB1 plans. But from everything we've seen since he's taken over, it would seem he wanted to change some things.

Projects tend not to go in a direction contrary to what major executives within the division want to see though, which Spencer was and still is. If he didn't like the direction he could have pivoted off to another opportunity quite easily, one with a whole lot less risk than what he's currently exposed to.

He championed the X1 "features" alongside everyone else from MS. He's singing a different tune because the consumer has rejected basically every single part of it, making MS repeal them on an item by item basis.

such a shame Spencer wasn't head of the division when this consoles was going through R&D

is it not possible to relay voice command via a microphone? why do you need a camera to do that?

Exactly. Im baffled why this hasnt become an alternative already. Ignoring this is obviously a move to force Kinect. But a mic would be a far smarter, cheaper way to implement voice commands. Voice is much better than gesture at this point.
