Deus Ex: HR's PC Preview Build version has leaked

Is there anyway they can hide code into preview releases they give to journalists and then bust their ass for a mega-lawsuit when they have hard proof about who's copy is being torrented? Seems like it should be simple.

I hope I'm not getting in trouble here, but what is GAF's policy on this? If it's a preview press demo and it's leaked, are we allowed to discuss it (in the hypothetical case that we get to play it)? Or is it a bannable offense since it's not supposed to be for mass distribution?

To be clear on this: I don't even have a gaming PC so even if I downloaded it I couldn't even play it. I'm just wondering in case somebody gets to it and we can have impressions from other GAFfers.

Unless you're press I doubt it. It's not like the scenario we get with leaked games a week or two before release, where it's physically possible that the people talking about the game have simply found somewhere which has broke street date.

Holy crap, first Crysis 2, then Deus Ex. This blows =\
It's just a preview build. Plus if the entire game leaked chances are no one would be able to decrypt the Steam encryption.

I see only one story on Google news about this...and none of the torrent sites, especially the most famous, have it.

Seriously, why even post this, other than provide a reason for people to download the leak ?

Don't you guys know that the best way to minimise the effect on the developer is to not spread the news ?

To give a positive spin on this news: It might increase word of mouth and general awareness about the game.

Ugh, I always find this kind of reasoning extremely flawed: "Shhh, everyone be quiet, do NOT talk about topic X, we might just spread the news." This isn't some 1984-type of forum, this is news that everybody has to know about. The damage has been done, we might as well discuss its ramifications or consequences, instead of trying to ignore what everybody else already knows about.

That's totally shitty. I guess I'll go finally bother my arse to go preorder it to make myself feel better for these guys.

Its still a big deal.

Remember when people were saying that the Crysis 2 leak wasn't the full game because it didn't have DX11 settings or anything like that and it really wasn't the full game? Yeah.

You aren't checking the right sites, I see it.

Well that's good. Well, good given how bad a full leak would've been.
Look on the bright side....it could bring it more sales? =|

Yes, stand in front of the flood and it will dry up....

Super easily, and a number of ways. I would say the easiest is to make a bit of dummy data in one of the files, open it up in a hex editor, and change what it says. All you would need is like a 64 bytes to put a decent water mark in a single file.

Aside from Half-Life 2 (servers hacked), no one ever has cracked a Steamworks game, correct? If the encryption is done properly and the keys are not deterministic it should be about as close to literally impossible as you can get.

I wouldn't even count Half Life 2, since the files were not encrypted at the time.

I do wonder why they only stole the binaries and not any of the source code (Or did they?)

Great, "PC gaming am doomed" even though 360 games are usually available to pirates sooner than the PC version.

True but to be fair it's much more tricky to pirate the 360 version since you need to mod the console.

I actually would like to hear opinions on the game. I'm vary wary of it, and and good impressions from this leak will mostly likely actually have me buy it. Otherwise I'll let it rot like the rest of the games where I don't trust the average reviewer.

I see the file - 3.95 GB. I also see similarly named files that are 4MB in size.

HAPPY VIRUS DAY EVERYONE!
Yep, I see a 3.95 one. If anyone is dumb enough to download a 4MB preview build of a game they deserve a virus.

Crysis 2 did not have DX11 at release. Deus Ex will be longer than 10 hours. There is a difference.

Surely they could, but it's hard to tell how much work would be required to do this for each of the many outlets they sent copies to.

when Crysis 2 leaked we weren't allowed to link screens of it that others had posted.

which was very annoying as Crytek insisted on posting screens running on lew settings.

Seriously, why even post this, other than provide a reason for people to download the leak ?

it is news. big news. it'll be reported on mainstream gaming sites. What's the point of a gaming forum that actively suppresses news about gaming?

I don't think Steamworks games are encrypted right off the bat; They code, they develop... and when it's time, it goes to steam where the files stay encrypted on their servers.

What about retail copies? Don't those get encrypted as well?

I wonder if the leak will easily be tracked, seeing how the game is Steamworks and the preview builds (I presume) also are running on Steam (Press Accounts and so forth).

As for the encryption: keep in mind that it was been decrypted since press was able to play it.

Now I should note that my copy of the game was removed from Steam automatically, so here's to hoping that the same will happen for the illegal build.. but if they can manage to run it outside steam, there's nothing to prevent that..

DE1 took solid 20 hours or so. Never played IW, though.

You dodged a bullet.

Quality aside, Invisible War takes about 10 hours for a casual playthrough and maybe 15 if you're hellbent on searching every corner and completing every sidequest.

Daeda said:
Press demo is 1/3th - 1/4th of the game

You take 25 hours to only complete main quest, 40 for everything, roughly.

Wow that unfortunate. Hopefully they figure out the responsible party, though I don't see how they would overlook watermarking copies to each journo. Especially for a build that is 10 hours long!

No. The difference is that a developer build of Crysis 2 leaked while only a preview build of Human Revolution is out there. Either way it's silly that people are acting as if OP exaggerated or is being sensationalist.
JackEtc said:
It was the full game, but while it was in beta. Still buggy for most, and hard to get running right.
Hard to get running in the first hour. People were already playing multiplayer the day of.

You don't think that calling a 10 hour preview build "Deus EX: HR's PC Version" is an exaggeration?

It's misinformation, and causes a lot of confused posts from people who immediately comment based solely off of the title without reading the OP or any other post in the thread.

When I posted it, the only information I could see was that it leaked. I edited it as soon as I found out it was only a preview build. I'm not trying to exaggerate or sensationalize anything. A mod has to change the thread title.

Oh, I didn't realize the PC version would only be released in a restricted demo format. /sarcasm

You can't be serious. Half or less of a game is not the full game as is implied in the title.

Some gaming journalist needs to be hanged by his dick.

No, these leakers deserve ass-rape, just like the Sony hackers. GAF demands ass-rape! The juniors' thirst for ass-blood must be sated.

Stupid jokes aside, this really sucks. But perhaps this will be positive press for DX: HR if the build is solid and people start praising it.

It was an honest mistake on the OP's part. This forum has seen way, way more sensationalist titles that are honestly attempting to be misleading, so I don't know if it's an issue. Besides, the only ones who can change it at this point is a mod, so PM your favorite to let them know and it'll get fixed when it gets fixed.

On topic, I'd have to agree that while this is surely damaging to the morale of the dev team it isn't the worst thing in the world to happen. Doom 3 had leaks like this, Half-Life 2 had leaks like this, Crysis 2 had leaks like this. These things happen to highly anticipated games (no one breaks in and steals copies of Monster Truck Deer Hunter) and that might actually speak in favor of the game's chances.

How about you fucking relax. He edited his original post the best he could.
