Deus Ex: HR's PC Preview Build version has leaked

Should this now be considered a beta pretty much?

Yea, I would consider it one.

I agree, the highlighting doesn't take away much, but playing with it off adds a little more. I'd go on to say highlighting is nice when searching for ammo. Sometimes you miss stuff.

I'm surprised impressions are allowed, is it only for this game or from now on for all leaked stuff? I'm not going to DL it though I want to be surprised when it comes out I wouldn't want to play an unfinished game anyway i'm no bug tester =P.

About to read some of your impressions now though hopefully they're not spoilerific. This game looks so awesome hopefully it feels like a real RPG as well as having challenging action. (well not full blown RPG but having those elements)

My impressions of the game.

Great:

-The game feels like Deus Ex from the get-go. I didn't particularly like the first Deus Ex, but I liked the world and its atmosphere.

-The writing is great, and incredibly engaging.

-Character animations are convincing, and though the game isn't the best looking game out there, I often appreciate the detail put into the emotion shown on characters faces. Especially with a cop I spoke to named Haas. Very gripping stuff...

-Combat feels pretty beefy, guns sound loud and pack quite a bit of punch. Gun fights can often feel a little off, much like the original Deus Ex, but when a firefight goes well, it's pretty good.

-Characters are all very interesting. I found myself engrossed in the relationship between Adam and his friend Malik, who drives the "BEE" aircraft. Like I mentioned earlier, the writing is excellent, and completely makes these characters believable.

-Atmosphere and art design is pretty much second to none. I swear, the amount of times I've just looked around, taken pictures via fraps and looked at them thinking of how much they look like drawings. Detroit looks pretty messed up too. It's bright and has incredible architect, but underneath lies a dark sinister side. The darker aspect to the city is fleshed out via the homeless, the prostitutes and gang members. The city feels a lot like Blade Runner, dirty and dangerous. But It feels alive though, thriving, not to mention looking absolutely stunning as well.

-The music is some of the best I've heard in gaming. I can't really say much more than that. It shines especially in the intro credit sequence. Absolutely phenomenal soundtrack so far.

Not so great:

The Janky ai, while not awful, is definitely ridiculous at times. Often I'll have been spotted slightly and only have another side to hide behind. After the guy has checked out the spot I'm at, the guy doesn't even check the other side. Which is literally a half a metre away from him. Yeah, that's kinda shitty.

Pre-rendered cutscenes. Really do not like this. I didn't like it in Mass Effect 2, and I certainly don't like it in this. The change from clear crisp looking real time, to poor quality cutscenes is really jarring.

That's about it. I don't really have any issues with the game except for the above. Hopefully the ai will be better in the final game. Either way, the game will still be stellar. I could write more but I've stated the basics.

I was going to the get this game, I've had the collectors edition on pre order for a long long time. But this just sealed the deal for me. It's as deep as Deus Ex gets, while modernizing itself to suit 2011. The wait till be even harder, but now that I've had a sip, I want the full glass.

A true sequel to Deus Ex. Amazing music too.
Ended up playing for 5 hours this evening.

But the narrow FOV and the poor mouse controls are killing me.

Hopefully someone from Eidos/Nixxes actually fixes this. Sadly these are things that will be unaddressed unless drilled into developers heads.

Nixxes usually deliver top-notch PC ports. So chances are you're jumping to conclusions.

Not ok to DL.. it's technically warez, which is against the ToS.

Asking for links and PMs with links would also be against the ToS.

Discussion of the content of the preview build is now allowed due to Eidos allowing it on their own forums, but no posting or asking where to get it from as it is not technically legal to download it.
Didn't know that. Scratch my comment then :)

For everyone with concerns about this preview code,

you're forgetting it's preview code. Unoptimized.

If I remember correctly, usually the developers point out what's missing/to be completed/etc. when presenting reviewers with this code. Considering we don't have that information, we're jumping to conclusions with things like mouse behavior (which a previewer specifically mentioned was being fixed).

Things that normally dont get fixed with console ports are the only concern I got (like Field of view). Everything else isnt a worry because its an old build. Besides the game is hardly unoptimized. It runs great.

Speaking of which, when was this build compiled?

Alright I got to Detroit and had to make myself quit. It's really good though, and true to the original.

Can't wait till August.

Not necessarily unoptimized, but this is far from a final build. Some of the stuff has got to be placeholder. Controls can be glitchy, game doesn't run consistently like a Nixxes port usually does. Problems with DX11 implementation.

I had a few random crashes, one or two very minor texture glitches. A couple of cases of NPCs getting dropped in, and two separate cases of hostile NPCs standing still in one spot and not moving. To be honest though you can expect all of that from a release and finished game.

The only major issue I noticed that could be attributed to the early build is long load times.

Edit: One thing that's missing is a silencer/stealth pistol. The only quiet weapons I found are nonlethal. Unless you count the sniper rifle.

The first thing I noticed is that the music is very much Mass Effect in style.
It reminds me of Deus Ex 1 more than it reminds me of anything else.

I really hate that they're using pre-recorded cutscenes on PC. Come on! :\

It's funny that years ago we'd be mad that they didn't use pre-recorded cutscenes, since they'd usually look so much better than the actual game. Oh, how times have changed.

Noticed this while playing Alan Wake earlier today.

I don't understand why pre-recorded cutscenes in PC games aren't high resolution like 720p or 1080p. I don't give a crap if it takes more hard drive space.

Well, you don't really have to worry about the space issue if you just render them.

In the apartments across the basketball court where the only way you can get in is by the fire escape, theres an arms dealer in there that sells a silencer. Pick the weapon you want it on.

Nice, thanks.

I get sucked into playing stealth only. It's so easy to do it in this game, and deus ex as well. Kind of want to see it like playing as a psychopathic killer cyborg.

There are a few automatic unlocking device items that you can use to hack high level doors/computers if you don't have the skill for it.

Edit: Oh as for easter eggs, I am disappointed that you don't get anything if you manage to get the basketball shot.

Where are the save files located? Also can I use my saves in the final version? As good as the game is, I don't want to continue with the preview version if the answer is no.

I was not initially going to buy this game, maybe later on a steam sale, but now I have it pre-ordered. :lol

But this game is all about playing it more than once.

Wow great impressions guys. Giving me a huge boner here, not gonna bite though as I really want to just wait for the final product so I can continuously play.

Thanks for the impressions GAF, sounds awesome. I loved Deus Ex's brilliant game design but it didn't age well gameplay-wise (stealth, gunplay...)

Also, post more screens !

Why exactly are you people playing this leak? Let alone posting about it?
The most obvious answer is probably: Because they can.

Stealth is still fine. I would say stealth in Deus Ex is better than any kind of implementation of stealth in any modern FPS.

Seriously? I didn't find him. Maybe he was one of the guys I shot and killed. Must go find him...

Wow, can't believe I forgot to mention an awesome reference to a character from the original if you hack Sarif's computer.

One of the email conversations is Sarif telling a general that it would be impossible to create a "skul-gun", and the general emails back to say he was "just checking" and that he "always gets nervous around Germans".
I nearly pooped my pants
at the beginning: Bob Page. Holy Hell, I did not expect him to be in this.

Agreed. Riddick isn't bad either, but yeah Deus Ex is still the tops for this imo.

did anyone else catch the "Final Fantasy 27" easter egg poster? It's on the wall when you first walk in to get your vision/UI adjusted.

i lol'd.

Settings are definitely nerfed for in the preview version. Playing this part, everything maxed out and it looked nothing like this recent screen from edios.

What? That picture looks like garbage. Doubt very much they've "nerfed" the settings. I noticed some lighting looked a little off, noticeably in Adams apartment, but that's about it. The game still looks stunning.

The above is a picture I took of the same location but at a different angle obviously.

I gave this a shot out of curiosity and i was surprised it ran decent on my old ass hardware. OC'd C2D @ 3.2 and my 4850 videocard of magic.

I might play it for another hour or two over the weekend but so far, just at the start, i enjoyed ducking behind random boxes and shooting people in the head. I guess my spy play through of AP a few weeks ago has rubbed off on me in DX3.

Certainly went from a "This is probably going to be hyped because of it's name" to a "This seems pretty fucking cool, 95% chance i will purchase this on day 1"

That "highlighting will ruin everything" argument was certainly a bust. It's certainly no magic secret finder. A perfect case of why you should stick by your design decisions and not give into a bunch of hysterics from people who have never played it.

I am glad they let you have the option to turn off the highlighting as I personally found it annoying and distracting. Which was what I feared watching the videos so being able to turn it off was really nice. I for one am glad the developers listened to those of us who didn't like it even though some of them went a little overboard.

First impression: Bored. Too much talking. Why does my camera and movement keep getting taken over? The levels seem very formulaic, essentially corridors with vent routes. First mission: A warehouse. How inspired. The voice acting from the Cabron and Saris is pretty awful. The cutscenes are horribly compressed, making it look worse than the in game engine. Hopefully it will pick up soon but so far I'm not impressed after about 2 hours. Deus Ex was my favorite game, and the dialogue is nowhere near close to the first.

What a shame.
