My impressions of the game.
Great:
-The game feels like Deus Ex from the get-go. I didn't particularly like the first Deus Ex, but I liked the world and its atmosphere.
-The writing is great, and incredibly engaging.
-Character animations are convincing, and though the game isn't the best looking game out there, I often appreciate the detail put into the emotion shown on characters faces. Especially with a cop I spoke to named Haas. Very gripping stuff...
-Combat feels pretty beefy, guns sound loud and pack quite a bit of punch. Gun fights can often feel a little off, much like the original Deus Ex, but when a firefight goes well, it's pretty good.
-Characters are all very interesting. I found myself engrossed in the relationship between Adam and his friend Malik, who drives the "BEE" aircraft. Like I mentioned earlier, the writing is excellent, and completely makes these characters believable.
-Atmosphere and art design is pretty much second to none. I swear, the amount of times I've just looked around, taken pictures via fraps and looked at them thinking of how much they look like drawings. Detroit looks pretty messed up too. It's bright and has incredible architect, but underneath lies a dark sinister side. The darker aspect to the city is fleshed out via the homeless, the prostitutes and gang members. The city feels a lot like Blade Runner, dirty and dangerous. But It feels alive though, thriving, not to mention looking absolutely stunning as well.
-The music is some of the best I've heard in gaming. I can't really say much more than that. It shines especially in the intro credit sequence. Absolutely phenomenal soundtrack so far.
Not so great:
The Janky ai, while not awful, is definitely ridiculous at times. Often I'll have been spotted slightly and only have another side to hide behind. After the guy has checked out the spot I'm at, the guy doesn't even check the other side. Which is literally a half a metre away from him. Yeah, that's kinda shitty.
Pre-rendered cutscenes. Really do not like this. I didn't like it in Mass Effect 2, and I certainly don't like it in this. The change from clear crisp looking real time, to poor quality cutscenes is really jarring.
That's about it. I don't really have any issues with the game except for the above. Hopefully the ai will be better in the final game. Either way, the game will still be stellar. I could write more but I've stated the basics.
I was going to the get this game, I've had the collectors edition on pre order for a long long time. But this just sealed the deal for me. It's as deep as Deus Ex gets, while modernizing itself to suit 2011. The wait till be even harder, but now that I've had a sip, I want the full glass.
