It just blows my mind, how people downplay VR (as well as the impact of the Wii). VR has the possibility of sending people in infinity universes of infinity possibilities and experience it with our major senses. Seeing those worlds, interact with other people or simply interactiving with objects is extremely exciting. And this is just the beginning. How anybody can see this as niche is just very strange to me ... true VR is one of humanity endgames and we see the first steps into this direction.
VR is probably gonna need another 5-10 years before it's truly ready for the mainstream.
The 400 set on amazon.de was sold out within seconds in Germany (at least what they had in stock for day 1). I think the pricing of PSVR is fine. For now.
Concerning killer apps, well, everybody has a different taste and I don't want to derange this threat into another list wars frency, but yes, I think that PSVR offers a couple of interesting / exclusive VR experiences, some of them tailored for specific markets like Japan.
Well, HTC didn't need to rival Oculus. Valve has a habit of confusing and overwhelming the market. They thought too many Steam Machines was a good idea when no one knows what real VR is yet. Hey lets design a display the exact same time as Oculus and tweak the specs around. Consumers will have a great time guessing what games will be compatible.
I totally want one.. I play a ton of Elite Dangerous. But money wise I need a new PC and VR cost so much already.
If Sony can bring more attention to Be that's great but id much rather wait till prices drop oh PC.
I agree.
There's just too much to overcome (not just price) in order for this to have mainstream success.
Or, it could be another Wii- Everyone will buy one for the novelty, no one will buy games for it.
Yup yup. Even prices for the current software and tech demos being sold as games are quite expensive. Give it another 5 years for the tech to mature a bit more and for devs to catch up with the hardware, software-wise.No killer apps
Expensive price
Rigs required to run VR are pricy
This is generation one. Anyone going in with the expectation that this will set the world on fire is dreaming. PSVR will do decently, but we're still talking about a niche here. Now the next generation of headsets should be the one to start the mainstream adoption.
/JealousThat is mostly what I'm playing now. A ton of elite dangerous in VR. I just picked up Onward but haven't had a chance to get in to it yet.
Saw this coming from a mile away.
It'll happen with PlayStation VR, too.
It's a fad after all.
pretty much
AR has way more practicality and uses than blinding oneself to the world to see another.
AR will die ever harder with a 3k price tag.
The prematurely smug, "I told you so" posts in this thread are really infuriating. Not sure why so many people seem invested in seeing VR fail. Does it offend you all in some way?
Yes just like the automobile.
PSVR has gotten a ton of marketing?
Same with 1080p TVs..... 4kTVs
Over time the prices drop with cheaper better manufacturing.
To those saying this is gen 1... It really isn't
The tech has been worked on for many many years and has evolved to this point.
There are not "no games" on VR. Chronos is incredible game, and the sense of being in the world is something that would be greatly diminished in non-VR due to the natural greater sense of scale in VR.
Damaged core shows that shooters can work and look great in VR even without touch controllers (I thought only when rift touch controllers came out would there be a shooter worth playing, but this game really surprised and impress me and with no nausea at all)
Edge of nowhere is a full quality game that isnt just a short minigame or experience.
Defense grid 2 works incredibly well in VR, and I would love to see an xcom game using the same VR mode.
And thats without touch controllers. Check out the Vive thread for impression on Raw Data and its almost entirely rave reviews.
i don't understand it either.
whole bunch of "i called it" posts.
Don't be too upset over this. It's a defensive mechanism when a technology comes out and is uncomfortable to a certain group of people. VR seems more of a threat to them because they don't want to play games using headsets, and they're afraid that all games will move in that direction. The premature pronouncements are more amusing than anything else. It's like people scoffing at the idea of radio when it first came out.The prematurely smug, "I told you so" posts in this thread are really infuriating. The first video alone while short has over 3m views. It's reaching public eyes.
That's a fact for any product, VR or AR. When AR glasses or headsets are under 500-800$ then we can talk.
VR support == VR exclusive. I'm not spending more money on a product just to """"""enhance""""""" my experience with a gameTime to unleash HL3 and L4D3 with VR support.
Drop the price to match PSVR and watch the sales go through the roof!
I imagine that AR will have more real world applications and VR will be better for games. While there's going to be some overlap over how the technologies work and what they can do, they're fundamentally trying to solve two different problems.I am just saying there's for more uses for AR and when it does come down and gets better it should be the new thing that takes off really.
But currently there's more issues than just pricing right now that needs to be solved.
The thing that's held me back has mostly been the motion sickness. I get easily motion sick and vr is no exception. I think it's been hard for developers to work around that limitation. If they can solve the motion sickness problem, a lot of restraints will be lifted off of devs and we'll see way more game releases on vr I think.
Eating ginger or taking Dramamine isn't a casual audience solution.
The "killer app" for VR will be...
FIFA World Cup Russia 2018
Live matches from stadiums...
Mark my words...

I don't think so. Maybe we can get 4k sports broadcast more than 5 times a year first.
