DF: Control on PS5 Tech Review

Seems they used Astro's floor haptic feedback in this game, you can feel the difference in carpet and hard floors.
Pretty good

Still no idea why anyone would want that outside of a puzzle type game made just for this purpose.

Maybe I am a simple guy but I kinda dig it. It's one of those small details that never gets old to me. I just like feeling the little pitter-patter as I run along in a game. I know it's not life changing or game altering, but I do enjoy proper DualSense implementation.

The triggers feel good in Control as well.

Holy shit RT mode is bad. I flicked it off within the minute. Give me 60fps every day of the week.

What kills it for me is the added input latency in that mode. It feels ultra sluggish

RT is just so fucking dumb. I don't even notice the reflections as i'm traversing to the goal and fighting off enemies. Why the hell would anyone sacrifice half the framerate for this? Even if it had a 1080p 60 mode, I'm still not sure. I haven't played Spiderman yet so idk but the idea of playing 1080p on a PS5 hooked up to a 4K sounds kind of wrong.

Eh, I mean it makes a huge difference on the PC version, the lighting, debris, and shadows RT especially.

These consoles really aren't ready for primetime RT, especially without DLSS 2.0. There's a lot more to RT than just reflections, but that's about all we have seen so far on console, with the exception of COD having RT shadows.

As far as I remember Ps5 and XSX will only deliver medium or low RT effects depending of the game/developer.

So honestly I do not care about RT if it cost performance and the effect will be "Meh". Maybe that is the reason a lot of people prefer 60fps option.

Maybe on a slow action closed enviroment games RT shines on consoles by example while exploring inside the mansion on Resident Evil 8. But in general do not expect a lot of RT this gen.

Complete opposite for me, game runs fine in 30fps and the difference is staggering with RT on.

Each to his own

Edit: had to double check, Wow you guys seriously playing it like that just for your 60fps
Looks like crap, those grainy blurred reflections makes it look horrible.

I'm sorry, but my honest opinion is this looks really underwhelming on PS5. It's a much softer, grainier, messier image than what I can play on PC. I know, I know, I know what you are going to say. I am NOT PCMR Edge Lord, I know this is 400 dollar budget hardware.

I wasn't expecting it to beat a 3080, but stuff like small items popping in 12 feet in front of me, shoddy textures around the office environments, input lag in RT mode, terrible artifacting around the character model in non-RT mode (this is really immersion breaking and something I never saw in 30 hours playing it on PC). Again, the low settings show up big time if you are used to playing it at 1440p maxed out. It's not nowhere near as clean an image.

I am using headphones, as I always do, and the audio isn't impressing me either, which is basically a first for a PS5 game, every other game impresses me (some more than others, but still).

Just FYI, the guy you are replying to is a hardcore PS5 stan who never admits when he is wrong. He claims expertise yet almost universally but when he is proven wrong or questioned (which happens regularly) he just resorts to "well, it's actually obvious" vague condescending gaslighting-esque deflection responses, or tells you you need mental help (read some of his interactions with VFX Vet). You're wasting your time trying to reason with him. He will repeat the same misinformation over and over and over and just blame you for not seeing things as he does.

It's definitely a disappointment. Unfortunately. IMO, of course.

One of my biggest gaming pet peeves is pop-in. The UE5 demo got me all excited about eliminating it this gen so I guess we just gotta wait for that engine to be released. Having to run Control with LOD lower than low seems...off, to me

This is not true. An old i7 and an old 1080 Ti was good for high end PC gaming for 6 years. Someone building a PC this year can buy a 5900x CPU and a 3080 and you won't need to upgrade for the next 5 years.
yeah I know

interestingly is VFX vet still about not seen any posts of late

Has the update become available yet on Series X? I don't know why but the game is launching under Gamepass with the Ultimate Edition disc inserted.

Edit: Nevermind - seems the Gamepass version was installed as well and the system was selecting it at default.

I know. RT is great, but these consoles aren't ready at all. They sacrifice a ton to achieve it. And then its not even the full deal.

RT is something for next-gen, hopefully those systems benefit from DLSS like tech. Because this ain't it.

I would easily sacrifice 4k for 1440p if it meant RT at 60fps but thats a bridge too far for these systems. They either get dialed down to 1080, or 30fps, both are kinda no go's for me.

Had a quick go to see how it compares to my PC (2070s) and I would say not well at all. I know DLSS is doing some really heavy lifting here but this is the most one sided comparison outside of Cyberpunk.

IQ seems poor even compared to a non-native DLSS and I get double the frame rate on PC with everything maxed except the RTX lighting (which crushes the frame rate on my PC).

Only used the first gun but didn't enjoy the trigger feedback and not sure why there is vibration when you are just walking around.

Now that 99% of the stuff I'm playing is 60fps+ I found the 30fps RT mode horrible to control.

Having said all that if you don't have a PC this update looks and runs miles better than any of the last gen versions and is still a good looking and fun game.

Well said. Fair summary. I never played it on PS4, but I believe people saying it is a nice step up over the last-gen version. Pales in comparison to the PC version, but it is what it is.

I mentioned this is the other thread, but why was this not mentioned in this video? (I presume it wasn't since it took 13 pages for someone to bring it up)

This is an actual measurable tech difference that doesn't require pausing and zooming to observe, yet it isn't mentioned?

Fair points.

On one hand, this video isn't the PS5 vs XSX video. That video is being done by Tom and should be posted "soon."

That being said, I jus checked on my PC and the game is 50 gigs (EGS version). So, yeah, it should have been mentioned since this is comparing PS5 to PC.

Definitely a great benefit for the PS5.

That makes zero sense. You don't feel footsteps in your thumbs. Your ears are used for hearing in life and in games. See the difference.
You also don't use your thumbs to walk irl, but you do here. Your every connection to the character is through the controller.
In the end it's pretty dumb to try to argue with someone about why they shouldn't like things they like

I'm not doing that at all. Read the comment I'm replying to and go back and read the comment of mine they replied to.

After playing this on my PC. I can comfortably say this game is running quite close to my I7 2070. I can run the game on my PC with a few settings turned up a bit more, but with that, the game can slow down to the lower 40s in larger areas and fire fights.
I can see why they chose to go with some low settings for some headroom in high fidelity areas.

I also appreciate all the haptics they added.

Loving the ray traced reflections. The game without RT already has good floor reflections, but with RT on everething else feels more realistic, especially because thers alot of glass and reflective surfaces in the game.

But after playing so many games at 60fps, it took me about 1 hour to get adjusted to the 30fps without feeling uncofortable to the eyes.

Will keep playing at 30fps with Ray Tracing on for the 1st playthought, if i like the game enough to do a second run will be at 60fps. The destruction you can do in the game is trully the most impressive thing, alot of particles flying all over the place and the game holds great on PS5. Havent noticed any frame drops.

The Wire Reaction GIF

Both versions looks and run good but seems like IO issues or some other optimisation issue causes 1 or 2 fps drop on SX for like milliseconds during intense scenes. Its not a big deal but you know Sony fanboys already popping those fireworks as we speak lol

My god thats a good comparison video, what a work

I'm completely torn on the two modes, played about 2 hours last night. Kept switching between Performance and Graphics. I really think it looks a lot nicer with RT but not sure if worth the framerate drop as the combat is so much more fluid @ 60fps

I don't notice the input lag people are referring on Graphics mode, I think its just a side effect of 30fps.

I waited for PS5 version to play this and never picked up on PS4 so I feel like I should play through and experience it in Grpahics for atmosphere but once I finish it, I will most likely never play through agan so would be missing out on the 60fps.

At least it's the same output resolution but if graphics mode had been higher it might of made my decision a little easier. I don't mind adjusting to 30fps as used to it with most AAA games on console but 60fps at same resolution makes it a hard choice. So so torn.

People see what they want to see. People feel what they want to feel.

It's there. DF said so, players have said so.

The 30 FPS RT mode in Miles and SMR is way more responsive. The 30/RT mode here feels like an anchor is dragging with the camera when you swing it around. We've all played 30 FPS games before. We know what input lag is.

Yeah it felt sluggish but did not give it much thought but I didn't spend too much time playing last night and had never played the game before so was just trying to take it in and figure everything out switching between modes. I'm sure I will notice now when I go back in.

I can handle 30fps in the Medium because of the fixed cameras, but this one... :messenger_persevering: And I didn't even get to the combat yet.

I wonder about those equivalent PC settings for PS5 that Remedy listed for DF...

How different are those settings on PS4 Pro vs PS5? Did Remedy just leave all the settings the same?

It would be the simplest way to make a version for PS5.

Take the PS4 Pro version, bump res from 1080 to 1440, double FPS cap for 60 mode. Then turn on some RT and cap it at 30 for the quality mode. Simple and quick.

Because it's great.

Every game I try that doesn't have haptics, 3D audio, and gyro aim implemented I look at as less than it could have been now.

Edit: Graphics mode appears to be for player generated bullshots (photo mode).

Photomode is bare bones, very disappointing.
You got some colour filters and that's about it.
There's nothing special to make them Bullshotty 👍

I meant more regarding the RT stuff, because it looks great with RT but plays better without it.

I know that when I take photos in the game I'm switching over to RT mode.

Because it is a last gen game. Not cross gen or current gen game. So except for RT effects, everything else was expected to be high or max settings.

That's a gross overestimation of the hardware potential. Control is doing some really complicated rendering despite having come out for the PC during the console's last generation. It's very much still doing some pretty 'next-gen' advanced rendering. Even the high-end graphics cards need DLSS to really turn on all the options.

don't waste your breath, anything that doesn't help their console war agenda is ignored around here.

Yup. I love it. The vibration intensity also changes if the characeter is walking slow or faster, is barely noticeable when she walks but you can still feel each step. Good to see more devs doing proper use of the haptics.

so i played some today on ps5 after beating it on ps4 pro at release. i like the combat & setting in it. the combat in this game at 60fps & with dualsense it's great, but every time there's some dialogue i just want to slam the door on my fingers to keep me from playing on cus it's just so horrible the way they mix real life and video game like they didn't learn from quantam break.

whatever though, it's nice game to play in short spans but totally overrated. visually there's also too much bloom, more about the physics and effects which are impressive. solid ps plus game

Someone posted a video on YouTube showing off PS5 Raytracing...in Jessie's eye

I still don't see why all that rasterization settings should be low/medium. On PS4 all those settings are lower than low? This still screams bad port to me.

Thanks for the laughs calling ME a console warrior.
