DF Retro The Nintendo Launch Spectacular

I've been playing it on Wii for the past decade and apparently the frame rate is steadier, at least according to Gamespot via Google.

IIRC, both Wave Race and Star Fox 64 both got bumped up to 30 fps on Wii VC. I'm not particularly surprised it happened for Wave Race, since it was already modified to remove all of the licensing that had long expired at that point.

Really? That's actually news to me. I need to try this.

Huh, no wonder I'm keeping Starfox and WR in such high regards technically compared to OoT's frame rate.

Fantastic video, I think this series is becoming my favorite from DF, great stuff. But oh man, Rogue Squadron II... damn, I miss Factor 5. I wish there was at least a way to get those licensed games back as re-releases or something.

I think the Nintendo launch that impressed me the most back in the day was the N64's, even though it barely had anything. The Gamecube's was incredible too, but I was late to that one... still probably the most impressive Nintendo system.

Fast forward to now, and here I am hoping the NX's just doesn't suck, sigh.

I guess I'll be the guy-that-complains-about-dark-showing-himself-on-camera this time. I didn't mind it before, but for some reason it feels slightly off in this video. Like you were looking at above the camera? Dunno how do describe this.

Another great video otherwise, really loving the retro segment.

The GameCube bit really took me back. Rogue Squadron 2 was probably the most "next gen" visual punch I've ever seen, even moreso than the move from 2D to 3D. I actually would have loved a whole episode on that game. Factor 5 did incredible work on the GameCube.

It runs at the same ol' 20fps on all versions.

I imagine it's the same case for Star Fox 64.

Damn, I really want one of those Mini NES doohickeys after watching that. Also a Mini SNES, Mini N64, Mini Gamecube and...they can stop wight there.

I still rate Super Mario 64 as what is probably the most ground breaking and influential game ever, it really did change games. I also just a have a touch of that feeling for The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and I have a vague feeling that it's also going to change games that follow it. It's just a shame that Nintendo don't seem to be making consoles for me anymore, if the last two generations are anything to go on.

You're not wrong. I have a video assist attached to the camera for monitoring and I was looking at it. So slightly above the camera rather than at the lens.

This is great. I particularly liked the little look at perspective texture correction and how it allowed EAD to make much larger worlds with less geometry. Never thought about it that way and it explains why some PS1/Saturn games suffered from far worse texture warping than others depending on the draw distance and other factors.

Also loved the cheeky look at Wave Race 64! And I'd forgotten Star Wars: Rogue Leader ran at a mostly stable 60fps - incredible for the time.

Yeah, polygons on a lot of early consoles like the Playstation, Saturn 3DO and even PC had to be subdivided up just to prevent them from warping . On PC there are examples of games that use software perspective correction to fix this problem, but even that wasn't a common occurance.

Here is an example from Virtua Fighter 1 for the Sega Saturn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl895zXjfyQ

If you look at the playing field you can see it "break up" with sections of the board popping in. That's because it had to be made up of smaller quads to prevent the playing field from warping. Virtua Fighter Remix and Virtua Fighter 2 don't have this issue on the same hardware because they do not use polygonal playing fields. Instead they use the Saturns 3D "Mode 7" like playing fields that are present in VDP2.

Yep. I always thought it was clever to use VDP2 for backgrounds in Sega's fighters but I still appreciate that VF1 did it using polygons.

I tried for depth last week with Castlevania.

Honestly, it's a matter of time. It's really tough making one of these a week while doing other stuff. I simply don't have the resources or time necessary to do everything I want. The extra depth takes a ton of effort due to both additional research and the editing time necessary to make it worth it. If I did one every two or three weeks, it might be easier.

Thanks for the response. Yeah the Castlevanis episode was chock full of hat kind of stuff which made it super interesting.

I guess it's a tough choice between 1 a week or less but more detailed videos. I know first hand how time consuming they can be having made this video a couple of weeks ago about sonics 25th anniversary http://youtu.be/YmbGsVxX1Vg which took me a solid week and a half to make which I bet you don't even have the luxury of being able to dedicate a full week to one of your videos, so thank you for being able to cram in what you do put in, in the time you are given.

I hope as this picks up in popularity maybe some devs will contact you to help fill in some blanks and anecdotes. The Crash Bandicoot making of and the die hard trilogy one are so full of details and hacks that only the devs would know of. Maybe having a rough timeline could help with this? Eg. Announce the next 3 months worth of videos but not the dates or orders to allow for chopping and changing.

Really wish I could do more than just subscribe to show my support, as between this and retro gamer magazine it covers a lot of nostalgia points for me. Keep up the awesome work!

Hey Dark, are the visuals captured for Rogue Squadron 480p? If so, are you using a NTSC console for that ?

They do look even better than what I have in memory!

Yeah, VF1 on the Saturn ins an interesting specimen. Probably the only 3D fighting game on the system that was made by Sega that uses polygon arenas. Virtua Fighter 1 also has an interesting port on the 32X : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HPgrUiOcsY

Everything is much lower poly, but the arena doesn't have pop-in like the Saturn game. I wonder if the 32x game doesn't use a polygon arena either?

Who owns the old Lucasarts Star Wars games, Disney or EA?

Would a VC deal between Nintendo and Disney for rereleasing the old games be doable even if EA isn't totally onboard?

Maybe since it's software rendered on the 32x they were able to do perspective correct texturing.

I love all the DF retro videos so far, keep them coming.

Are there any plans to cover the classic Tomb Raider games (by Core Design)?
