You're almost certainly correct, that it was purely accidental, and it is in fact the starter versoin.

Well they are definitely different sizes. I have both beta and retail clients. I think the retail is something like 7gb? I don't remember tbh

Yes it was working. I played for about 40 minutes before they turned the servers off. Brand new Battle.net account.

Seems like the GB link I clicked was the retail version, so I just clicked the US version, downloaded the setup and it started installing. Weird!

Selecting EU or Asia servers gives the aforementioned error and trying to connect to "The Americas" gives an error saying the servers are down for maintenance.
