Diablo 3 Gameplay Video [Art Debate Thread #547]

It's so GOTHIC, KrawlMan!

Kayo, that video proves my point not yours. Jump to the 6.30 mark and tell me that doesn't look just like what KrawlMan posted.

I'm talking about what we've seen so far from D3. The screenshost and gameplay videos indicates that the D2 style of atmosphere isn't there. Atleast thats how I feel, sorry for having an opinion, seems like it offended you.

If we would be talking about D2, your opinion would be judging the whole games artstyle based on Act 2. It's misguided to say the least.

The feast of crow will be grand I say!

Seriously though, I have the original HD vid of the 20 minute presentation from awhile ago, in addition to some nice Broll footage from 09'. If those don't sell you on this game alone, then I'd say look elsewhere.

If someone knows of a place I can upload the larger vids to I will.

Regardless of how this argument ends, I'm out. I think D3 looks amazingly fun and imo the new style trumps anything in D2.

Hmm, they don't seem to have made act 2 any more gothic in the 1.0 release either:

Did I say Act 2 specifically had a gothic look? Could you quote that for me. I was talking about the overall darkness and gothic style of the game and said that I didn't find it D3 from what I've seen so far. I never said that Act 2 was gothic. If you've stopped trolling and bothered to read my posts instead of looking wasting both our times you'd understood that.

If you compare your screenshots/my video to the early alpha one you posted of Act 2, you'll see a significant change in brightness. Sure, Act 2 wasn't that dark, but why do you keep focusing on that since we've seen different environments from D3 which still does not have the Act 1/3 dark look. Especially not the outdoor forest areas from D3.

I always love mage characters, so I'll probably be the wizard first.

But man, the monk looked really fun.

*Punch, punch, punch, BOOM! punch, punch, punch, KABOOM!*

Even if this looked like a C64 game, I would still play the hell out of it.

Yeah, I've abandoned all the other D3 threads so it might be time to give up on this one too.

I'm going to bold this, not out of anger but because I'd like you to read it closely:

We have not seen every environment in Diablo 3 yet, so it would premature to start saying they've abandoned the dark look of Diablo 2 because even Diablo 2 wasn't dark and gritty all the way through.

The problem with your argument is that I only need to find a handful of screens showing that D2 didn't look like some emo kid's DeviantArt all the way through and it's shot to pieces.

If it's premature to make comments and express our concerns about what we've seen so far, then all these threads would be pointless. I have stated several times that the dark Diablo atmosphere have been missing from what I've seen so far from the videos and screenshots.. And you should read that sentence closely, maybe twice.

And I'm still waiting for your quote where I call Act 2 GOTHIC, since you've been babbling about that for several posts now.

If blizzard were sitting on a bunch of screenshots/info that instantly would shut the not-like-D2-crowd up, they would've showed them by now (with the game coming out in 2011 and all).

What we see is what we'll get.

I said I was out, but I couldn't help but post this. I'm just curious, do neither of these screens fit the bill for you?

So you didn't watch the videos released around the demon hunter reveal? The grave yard looked damn dark enough.

You didn't specifically say Act 2, however:

You said:
If you even ignore the graphics, you'll notice that it doesnt have that gothic/satanic dark atmosphere which was in D1/D2. If this game wasn't named Diablo 3, I woudln't even know if it was a part of the franchise.

The point being that your argument began by attributing a particular look to D2 which even D2 didn't maintain for the entire game. Act 3 also isn't particularly satanic or gothic, neither is Act 5. And don't worry, I'll stop babbling now because this is extremely boring.

Edit: and yeah. Look at those screens above for your daily dose of satanic and gothic.

I agree that the DH reveal video and the announcement video with the barbarian battling skeletons impressed me the most. I believe there still are some significant change in the art/style of the game which gives it more cartoony/WoW look to it than Diablo. Similar to those screenshots posted a few posts above. The edited screenshots with less light radius and less overall brightness is the look I personally would have prefered. That is more what I'm personally looking for in Diablo.

But hey, since you guys seem to enjoy the look, then it's fine. As I said, it's my personal opinion and concern and I expressed it.

I wonder if they'll have a gamma slider to let you darken the game if you choose. That might solve the problem for many people. They had the gamma slider in Diablo 2 as well. The brighter screenshots probably just had the gamma turned up to max.

I'd assume they'll have gamma and/or brightness.

Something else to consider; if PR are picking a bunch of screens to release publicly which showcase all of the hard work the team has put in over the past 5 years, do you really think they'll pick ones where it's so dark you can't see shit?

That's likely what's going on, screenshots with high gamma.

Well that's what happens when Samwise is the art lead in the company. Personally I don't mind it. People were going nuts over it with SC2 and nowadays nobody whines about it.

More whining about graphics =(.

Blizzard's artists MORE than make up for any deficiencies in that area as far as I'm concerned. For example, WoW, despite it's dated look, still looks better than many "realistic" games on the market to my eye. Because of the art.

Surprised to read this in that mtv multiplayer blog regarding to the fanshots :

"You've got to think that there's potentially up to seven other people in addition to yourself, and several dozen monsters"

So at one time they did really try to go for 8 player co op . Hmm.

This is diablo, not wow. But then again, you are probably example #1 of the target audience blizzard is trying to appeal to.

This is only a mitigating factor if you like WoW's art direction.

Diablo 2 never looked realistic either IMO.

Diablo 3 art looks fine. I'm sure it'll look great in motion. Everyone had concerns about SC2 but it turned out way better than people were expecting, art wise.

I don't know if it's from my age, but I find this meh...
Video games just seem to have reached a full stop in ideas. I just don't have the feeling: "wow, this looks fun. I have to try this".

Blizzard games are always way more fun to play than they look in screenshots. Actually give it a try before making that judgement.

Please, please, please, please be true.

I would love to see a 8 player cap instead of 4, even if its highly unlikely at this point. Those who prefer 4 could limit it to that, just like in D2, and those of us with bigger group of friends wouldn't have to split up.

Hell when were blizzard games ever really about top notch graphics.

That article was from 08 or something like that so yea they probably changed their mind. Coop is very important to me in Diablo and I have to say I couldnt really care less about the 4 player cap.
I know many probably have but best games I had was with max 4 people. With 8 players it's just a mess.

No idea why they opted for 4 player co-op instead of 8. I wonder if it was to keep down PC spec requirements.

Not that I ever played Diablo II with more than 3 friends at a time.

They said in the recent press event that they found 8 players too chaotic and confusing to work in PvE. 4v4 might happen in pvp.

two cool screenshots, thanks

You guys really think those two shots have the same art style? Because outside standard techniques used to keep polygon count down I really don't see it myself.

World of Diablo !

Edit : Let's troll more on the graphics where is the screen...

Where in the two replies did anyone even approach saying anything about the art styles being the same?

Yeah I feel the heroes don't look like WoW at all.

It's some of the other people.

I see it and I've noticing it for a long time, but watch it some people here are Blizzard fanboys and can't see it or think it really looks Diablo-ish.

It's because it does look like Diablo.

Pretty funny to call everyone who disagrees with you "Blizzard fanboys."

Aside from the barbarian's helmet and the valor mercenary, the models totally look Diablo-esque to me.

People were discussing that a little further up the page. Sorry you weren't able to keep up with the discussion that's going on.

I'll give you that one actually, that guy looks like a guard in Stormwind. Still, there's very little similarity when you look at things like heroes and monsters, although some of the environmental texture work definitely is interchangeable.

Can't agree more, they don't look anything like WoW
