Did Mario Kart 64 secretly suck?

Love how everyone agrees that DD was fucking awful.

That was when I realised the Nintendo I love was dead. Apart from Baby Park. That shit was intense.

When it released? Hell No.

Today? yes, kinda(compared to the others). Time was not good to it due to framerate. Loved playing with Wario though.

I was watching the Giant Bomb Freedom Stream and they were talking about how disappointing Mario Kart 64 was. I also remember being slightly underwhelmed by it. My friends and I played the SNES game all the time but the N64 version rarely entered into our rotation.

I think it was the lack of battle arenas that really did it for me, although railing off Rainbow Road was also a slap in the face. Maybe part of it was it just wasn't as impressive from a technical standpoint. I don't know, but for whatever reason MK64 was not one of my favorites.

It doesn't suck at all.

But it DOES have the worst Rainbow Road.

Are you on drugs?

MK64 had the worst Rainbow Rd ever.

It's actually the worst track in the series bar the massive shortcut which saved you from having to do half to shitty track.

No

Crash Team Racing was the best kart game of that era though.

Mickey's Speedway USA wasn't too bad either

That reading comprehension

What thread are you reading? A lot of people here have said it's their favorite. There have been entire threads on this forum dedicated to it where the vast majority agreed.

From what I can see, it's universally considered the worst fucking MK game ever.

Because it is.

It's sad every subsequent MK game is based on that engine. They need to burn that shit to the ground and start again.

Smaller tracks, less gimmicks. Get ride of that snaking bullshit.

At least the drift boost in MK64 required skill instead of the auto boost bullshit we have now.

He's agreeing with you...

lol!

I'm half asleep! I'm having a Mario Kart break down man.

Damn you Miyamoto/Iwata for ruining my childhood. I fucking LOVE Super Mario Kart. Why did you fuck it up man. I wanted to cry when I first played MK64. I've learned to love it. A bit like Prison rape :'-(

I think it is the worst in the series, but if it was your first Mario Kart, then i can see how one can have affinity for it.

Back around MK64's release, the moment I realized you could go off-track and explore the garden around Peach's castle from Super Mario 64 blew my mind.

Obviously because a better racing game was released for the Gamecube.

...Oh, wait, everyone hated that too.

If you're not playing City Trial in endless mode trying to blow up everything and hoard every vehicle, you're doing it wrong.

It's not, but it's clear you're seeing only what you want to see.

I'm half asleep!

This might be part of it

God yes. City Trial was fantastic, even with its problems. With a little refinement, it could serve as a great downloadable game

I'll qualify my answer here.

  • The level design in Mario Kart 64, is possibly the best in the series.
  • The visuals were great for their time.
  • The weapons were good, save for occasionally buggy physics.
  • Multiplayer was very well designed, once again, possibly the best in the series.
  • AI, was HORRIBLE, and enemies frequently bounced back from impossible odds.

The later hurts single player big time. Multiplayer however, is a real treat, even now.

Using Giantbomb tastes as a barometer for public opinion is ill advised.

Ask Jeff what he thinks of Yoshi's Island.

It was good for its time, but I feel it's the one game in the series that hasn't held up well.

This is a pretty accurate topic. The game was trash but no one wanted to admit it.

It's only saving grace was that besides SC, every other MK game has been worst.

How a series spawned from SMK is so awful is a mystery.

64 is the only one I can stand, honestly. I think at the time people were bummed out about the characters being sprites but then again those same people think it's just fine that the entire SNES game was about awkwardly rotating a bitmap

The best Mario Kart is Mario Kart 64 for being a superior Super Mario Kart in 3D.

The worst Rainbow Road is from the Wii version. Being forced to drift just to turn corners is bad design.

The fact tracks had actual scale and geometry made a huge difference from Super Mario Kart - on top of four more players and the combo shells/nanas. It's been downplayed with how insane tracks get in later titles though.

I will always love the batshit nutty AI though, especially in Bowser's Castle on 150cc.

Multiplayer was great fun but going back I do think the physics and controls felt "off" - maybe because the racers were all sprite-based?

Get ride of that snaking bullshit.

What are you even talking about, there was one installment that had excessive snaking and since then (7 years ago) it had been pretty much removed from the series.

It's amazing how terrible your posts are in this thread, it's like you are trying to raise the bar on how bad one's contribution to a thread can be.

I played it late and couldn't believe how bad it was. The single player game is one of the worst things I've ever seen Nintendo produce. There was no fun element whatsoever.

I never imagined a single post on GAF could ever get all these things right at the same time.
You know your stuff, bro. Perfect post.

o/\o

That's an internet high five!

Awesome username!

GX had awful handling! X was so smooth compared to that twitchy mess!

Graphics and music were insane but handling is what matters!

The only sane way you would think Mario Kart 64 sucked is if you played it primarily single-player. Which defeats the purpose of the entire game.

This is only based off personal experience and word of mouth, but I would venture a guess that MK64 is the most played local multiplayer game of all time. People still play it incredibly often today. More so than other classic local games like Goldeneye or Smash Bros.

It's rather simple: Mario Kart 64 was good. It's not anymore.

For its time though, multiplayer was fantastic. It just did not age well; one of the few first-party 64 game I actually feel that way about.

Awesome multy-player, terrible single player. Diddy kong racing is a much more complete game (although the multyplayer races weren't as fun as MK the battles were muuuuch better).

Using Giantbomb tastes as a barometer for public opinion is ill advised.

Ask Jeff what he thinks of Yoshi's Island.

Oh God, what does he think about it?

After playing every Mario Kart extensively I can say I believe that Mario Kart 64 is the worst of them and people have bad nostalgia goggles for it.

I think graphically it has aged poorly like all 64 games, but it still feels engaging and dynamic to play. See my edit, I know it's personal anecdotes but most people who pick it up even for the first time still love it, it's very straight forward but there is enough nuance in the controls that takes time to master. It can't have aged too poorly if it's still the go-to dorm or local game besides sports game X or FPS X.

Definitely. And attacking other cars in GX didn't ever feel right and was no near as fun/effective as in X.
Driving an heavy car in X made you feel all the weight and splashing on other racers with maximum momentum was insanely addicting.
And with so tight controls, you could very well perfect aggressive strategy and selectively blow your competitors. Dr. Clash all the way.

Can't say I've ever played a Mario Kart game which I would consider bad - and I've played them all with the exception of the SNES version, oddly enough.

That said, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed has put me off the Mario Kart series somewhat. There are so many features in this game that make you think, "Why hasn't Mario Kart been doing this for years?" Mario Kart 7 doesn't even have a single race option for goodness' sake!

And I'm unsure if Crash Team Racing has just aged badly or was just always horrible. Having played it recently, I can't take the claims of it being the best kart racer ever seriously.

Well as kids we played Diddy Kong Racing a lot more, but MK64 was brought out for the battlemode. I went back to it with the VC so I could go through Grand Prix mode myself (I never had an N64) so I could say Ilve completed each one.

I'd have to say from a racing perspective which is what interests me now in Mario Kart (back in the old days I prefer battle mode) MK64 is probably the worst in the series. This can be further reflected when it comes to the retro courses in the latter games. The N64 tracks are often the most boring tacks in the game.

However it did have the best soundbites out of any of the games.

Yoshi's Valley was indeed awesome, but at the same time kind of sucked since the N64's processors couldn't figure out who was in the lead on that track. I'm glad it's in the Mario Kart cannon but it should have been save for a system with more computing power.

Not sure if serious.

Mario Kart 64 was the time when all my friends ditched videogames and i kept playing (for a while more)

So i had to play it alone.

And yeah, it was terrible. I found it as dissappointing as "Mortal Kombat Sub Zero"

I had a lot more fun with Wave Race or Snowboard kids.

I always hear people saying multiplayer is amazing. But single player was a disaster.
