Diddy Kong Racing (N64) looks really fun.

Did you just get unthawed or something? 18 years is ancient for a video game.

That's a naive perspective. Considering how much video game history was in place before the N64, I can only assume such comments are coming from younger gamers or just those with a poor context of history. Nobody would claim The Matrix or any film from the late 90s was ancient. Just silly.

18 years before the n64 launched, the atari 2600 had barely launched. 18 years is basically half the life span of modern, contemporary video games as a medium.

It absolutely is ancient. Kids who were born the day the game was released are now legally adults.

I like Mario Kart's courses better but I wish they would do an Adventure mode like Diddy Kong did. Mario Kart is awesome bug it is a missed opportunity to elevate things.

Yep. Just like me. Except I was born like half a year earlier. :p

Avoid the DS version at all cost.

This was literally my only reason for wanting to step into this thread. This needs to be spread like gospel.

Funny thing is the Tiny kong redesign wasn't even one of the worst "flaws" (If you call it that) of the port/remake. I'll let others chime in, though. I washed my hands of it long, long ago.

But, yes, Diddy Kong Racing is to N64 what Crash Team Racing is to PS1. Mario Kart 64 has aged horribly thanks to superior modern entries like MK8, MKDS, and MK7, but Diddy Kong Racing has yet to be surpassed.

My favorite kart racer of that era was crash team racing. I actually bought a multitap for that game. I love the course design.

My problem with dkr is mainly aesthetics. I think it's an ugly game with terrible character design.

The original N64 version I think is of the best kart racers out there in my opinion, and even after getting and playing MK64 on the VC I think this game easily trounces it. Along with GE 007 I'd say it's one of the best N64 MP games, and one of Rare's best games in general. Soundtrack is also David Wise at probably his best (I have yet to completely hear is work on DKC:TF). I always wanted to own a copy of it when I was a kid (as I've played copies of it at my relative's house), but as of this day I never have. :(

I'm really saddened it hasn't received a sequel or VC port of any sort, because there really isn't another racer like it, even with the advent of MK8 and ASRT introducing flying/gliding and underwater/boating sections to their base gameplay. I'd also like to see being given another remake, while the DS remake exists, word around the block seems to describe it as rather pants in comparison.

I never played this game actually. But I recently saw some footage (From this video)

It looks a bit rough, but the game is ages old, however, it looks really fun.

I don't why I missed this?

It's also looks very unique--hub world, boss battles?!

It is worth playing today? Sadly, due to the Nintendo/Rare split, it's not on the VC, nor can it be on MS platforms due to the DK characters.
It's not only worth playing, it's worth buying a used N64 and the game.

I really loved this game as a kid. More than I ever liked any of the Mario Kart games.

Also, my mind was blown when I realized (a few years ago) that both Banjo and Conker were selectable characters. I just played as the Tiger.

Rare was making a sequel to DKR called Donkey Kong Racing on the Gamecube. But then the buyout happened, and Rare switched the project to the Xbox, and the game became Sabreman Stampede. It was later cancelled.

I'm surprised Nintendo never made a DKR sequel after that. I guess it's because they have Mario Kart, but still. ._.

My brothers and I get together to replay it each Christmas. It's aged quite well, actually. Still perfectly playable, and the clean/colorful art direction still looks good. Very lively, too.

It's the only game I got with my N64, and I played it religiously for about 8 months until I got a new game. I'd rent here and there, but still. Even after I got a bunch of new games, I'd still revisit it.

It's one of the best games I've played, and I'm glad I owned it. I still prefer it to the other kart racers out there.

it has been baffling me since this game came out why Nintendo never added an adventure/hub-world/boss battles campaign into mario kart. it was a great idea then and it's been an absolute no-brainer idea ever since

I could never get into this game beyond playing casually every now and then.
I tried again with the DS version, same results. I have always enjoyed MK more.

Diddy kong racing was so cool. Hub world, boss fights, collectibles , full 2nd adventure. It lacked in battle options though

I couldn't beat the final boss, because I didn't know that you needed to tap A to get an extra speed boost whenever you went over booster arrows.

Once I found that out, it was easy.

The campaign in that game was amazing. That final race against Wizzpig had me tearing my hair out.

Yeah I think that's my worst memory from DKR. I can't remember how many times it took me to beat that mofo, but I remember getting pretty frustrated at it back in the day.

It's such an awesome game otherwise though. I actually played a few races a month or so ago and it still holds up as far as I'm concerned. The music is fantastic. I remember so many songs from DKR, yet none from Mario Kart 64.

Months old? I'm not even sure how that was brought up. So "ages old" is anything more than months old now? The N64 era was is a fairly recent generation.

No it isn't. It's going on almost two decades old now which is a long time. Just have to accept were old now, and that kids will look at Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time the way we probably looked at Pong or Asteroids. Hell I can't believe some gamers today don't even know what an NES, SNES, Genesis or Game Boy are.

The music during the snow stage is the best, brings back so many memories.

Game was royally hard when trying to get all the silver coins. If you didn't, an entire world remained locked which kindof pissed me off. Beautiful looker though, and so colourful.

Also some of the boss fights were BS.

Amazing game and a shame we never got a sequel, not including the poor remake on ds.

Getting platinum in this game caused a few grey hairs to say the least! But damn rewarding being able to beat and unlock TT!

No love for Crash Team Racing? Diddy Kong Racing did nothing for me (especially with the selection of playable characters), but CTR was an innovative mascot racing game that did a lot of things right, especially since it almost looked like an afterthought for developer Naughty Dog, before leaving the series behind for greener pastures.

it's the greatest kart racer of all time

Crash Team Racing, bless its heart, has crap ass music, awful handling and all that negative jazz. most kart racers in existence can't even wipe DKR's ass

And I'm not even on my hyperbolic shake and I'm already like this.

Ridiculous.

I am mentoring someone at work who is 18. He was born after the N64 was released. He's old enough to drink, drive and legally have sex. His first console was the 360...when he was 11.

The N64 is the equivalent to him as to what the Atari 2600 was to me when the N64 launched.

This motherfucker right here was so overpowered, and I never told my friends:

Congrats to you sir, way too steep a challenge for me.

DKR was my first N64 game, so I have a soft spot for it. Even today I still like it better than MK64. It was daring, and yeah it did reach a bit to far for the hardware but the variety of gameplay off of the same driving physics was ridiculous. Some of it I could have done without (coin challenges...), but Rare threw everything at this game, and most of it was great.

It's funny because I am the same age as he is, but my very first console was an SNES and after that the N64. In fact the first time I got a modern console (the ps3) was on my 13th birthday. And I still don't play it as much as I play my N64. :P

Even by today's MK8 I believe DKR is superior. It actually jumped straight into the multi tiered racing right out of the gate instead of taking 2 million years to finally add air & water to the equation like MK did, and even when MK did catch up they only added basic gliding and the water sections are just low traction versions of how u normally race lol no boats in the water & no actual flight.

Its so disappointing because thats what made DKR so replayable for me was how diverse the tracks could be it takes so many playthroughs to really race all the ways you want, that + the competitive mp just adds to that replayability.

Sonic all star racing transformed imo took some inspiration from DKR and I think mario kart needs to stop taking 200 years to make some real advancements aside from graphics & rotating in/out items every installation since ds.

It looks really fun because it is really fun.

The DS remake has some nice ideas but is held back by a ton of weird superfluous DS gimmick bullshit like needing the stylus for start boosts.

One of my favorite games of all time. Tap the throttle like a mofo to go faster, and beat the game to its awesome, ultimate end. You'll be proud of yourself.
