Diddy Kong Racing (N64) looks really fun.

It's an amazing game, way better than Mario Kart 64. The framerate is terrible, particularly in multiplayer, but I never noticed that and enjoyed it as a kid.
The DS remake is good too.

Also, Game Sack is great everyone should be watching their videos.

The multiplayer mode where you have to hatch eggs in your nest was absolute dynamite. Prefer the MK64 tracks, but DKR's multiple vehicle system was way ahead of its time - and still is, really. I remember being excited for the DS remake, but knew it was going to end badly upon discovering it gimped Taj by giving him some really awful generic English accent instead of his fabulous Apu-esque Indian one. Atrocious.

It was awesome even with the crap framerate.

In fact, it is really fun. The greatest kart racer of all time, even! It'ss absolutely worth playing today. N64 version is the best.

It was. I liked it better than Mario Kart 64.

It's the best kart racer you can play in single player next to CTR, still worth playing yeah.

Another good example of Rare being kings of multi-player during the N64. It never got old. One of the best kart racers of that particular era.

Fantastic game, much better than Mario Kart 64.

Those boss fights! That music! The secrets! Awesome game, on n64.

It was kind of hard, but singleplayer was much better than in Mario Kart 64.

I always thought it was much better than Mario Kart 64.

That said, I always preferred Diddy Kong Racing multiplayer to Mario Kart 64 multiplayer, too.

I'll echo these sentiments. MK64 was the first ever Kart racer I played and it was rubbish (mate bought it on release day) and I couldn't believe how blinded some people were "Oh it's awesome, you just don't get it yet!" it really was average at best. Wasn't overly interested in playing DKR but I did to make up the numbers and boy was I glad I did, probably the best split screen racer I've ever played, solid game, thoroughly enjoyable.

I've always enjoyed this game, but I seem to recall a LOT of people vehemently disliking it back when it came out. Am I just imagining this, or has the general attitude toward it evolved over the years?

Recently, I read some old Usenet threads from back when the game came out, and I seem to remember lots of gamers hating on it for being a "Mario Kart clone" and for looking "too kiddy" at the time. Gamers were complaining that the N64 didn't need another kart racer on the system. :P

Crash Team Racing, bless its heart, has crap ass music, awful handling and all that negative jazz.

The awful handling is you not coming to grips with the power-sliding mechanic, which CTR places the greatest emphasis on out of virtually every mascot racer. Oh, and try using the D-Pad instead of the Stick. Makes left-to-right movement much smoother, since you don't have to worry about holding up since you're holding down the gas button.

And crap ass music? Spare me.

Hot Air Skyway
N. Gin Labs (Very reminiscent of Ape Escape's OST)
Citadel City
The rest of it, it's all solid.

My cousin and I used to have a system for game purchases back then- I'd get the Nintendo stuff and she'd usually get the Rare equivalent. I'd have Super Mario 64 and MK, she'd have Banjo-Kazooie and DKR and we'd swap games when we were finished. After she got DKR, she was bitterly, bitterly disappointed and I didn't see my copy of MK for months after that.

played it as a kid. as an adult, I never want to play it again. the single player is more advanced and interesting structurally and conceptually than Mario kart thanks to the 3d overworld and bosses, until it became frustrating towards the end.

would rather play sonic all stars racing (transformed) for pc.

My favorite of the kart racers from that generation. I always remember being told that there was a way to get Wizpig as a playable character if you could beat the final boss race fast enough. If only...
