Didn't like Uncharted 3. should I get 1 and 2?

It's always amazing to me how the opinions on UC2 and 3 differ so much.
For me both were almost equal but people here at GAF seem to think that UC2 was the best game ever while 3 was garbage. I don't get it

They're different games and the "play feel" is quite different between them.

Uncharted 2 is one of the best games ever made, so yes, play that. There are people who HATE UC3, yet consider UC2 to be a masterpiece (I'm not one of those, I enjoyed 3). The first one has the best setting/story/villains, but the actual mechanics and shooting are the weakest in the series. I would play that one if you're curious about how the series started or end up enjoying UC2 if you play it. I've played through the first game just as much as the second.

I agree. The best criticism you can make of 3 is it doesn't offer anything new from 2. The advice people are giving is that if you played 3 and didn't like it, then 2 will change your mind. But they both share the exact same strengths and weaknesses. If you don't like 3, then save yourself a trip to gamestop and play something else.

People telling you that 2 is the best aren't wrong, but it's not exactly the best advice. They all have the same gameplay, the same kinds of setpieces and scripted events. If you really didn't like 3, you probably won't like the other two. They're marginally better (arguably), but they're nearly the same thing.

Get UC2. Don't bother with UC1.

You won't care what happens in Uncharted 2 if you don't play the first one.

You also won't care what happens in Uncharted 3 if you didn't play either of them.

The charm the series has is because of the characters and how they interact with each other.

Skipping out on their history, and their chemistry to play the latest one robs you of your enjoyment of the whole experience (because the gameplay itself is just alright)

EDIT: Uncharted 1 introduced Nathan Drake perfectly despite the many flaws the game had.

I have no clue how UC2 has the consensus here as the best UC game.

UC1 by far has the better pacing and narrative.

UC2 is a fucking mess, especially the last hour.

Anyone that is Uncharted 3 is "garbage" or "literal shit" or anything like that is completely lying. The game is very well made. It is extremely polished. The graphics are great. The story and action are fun. It just might not be as amazing as Uncharted 2. If you truly did not like Uncharted 3 then you will not enjoy Uncharted 2.

Don't make absolutist statements like this.

I found nothing but frustration in every single combat scenario in Uncharted 3. Nothing but annoyance at how the game controlled and how the arenas were set up to feel cheap as hell. They took the "always gotta be moving" aspect of many of the scenarios in 2 and then cranked it up to 11 to the point that it felt like you were always being swarmed from all directions by hyper-accurate enemies. I had zero fun playing the shooting part of Uncharted 3. It definitely looked great, had some of the best cut scenes/set pieces, and was extremely polished, but I left the game feeling really bitter about it.

Meanwhile, Uncharted 2 is one of my favorite action games of all time and the only game I've ever platinumed. Opinions! Also, I really enjoyed the combat in The Last of Us. I think it's just a case of one design team having different ideas about what the game should be and how it should play. I gotta say I was relieved to hear that the UC2/TLoU leads would be taking over Uncharted 4.

UC2 is one of the greatest games ever made. There is not a game ( maybe RE4 comes close) that is better paced than UC2. Absolutely masterful game design and craftsmanship that deserves a purchase for sure.

I agree with this. To me the difference in the combat scenarios of 2 and 3 are obvious as day. Cheap, small arenas which aren't fun, constantly being swarmed and those godawful shotgunners who just walk up to you whilst you are being attacked from all sides by everyone else. The encounters feel very much like 'throw everything and the kitchen sink' at the player, I never felt that with U1 or U2. The best part of Uncharted 3 was in the pirate shipyard, a part which felt completely unrelated to the rest of the game as well. You can't even use melee in a close counter as they made it so protracted and god fucking awful in 3 that you eventually get killed by someone else shooting at you anyway. Ugh.

If you didn't care for 3, I don't know why you'd like the others. Unless you really need to see an ersatz Spielberg movie while doing some autojumping and firing the world's slowest bullets?

Argh, it's all coming back now. I rarely get angry playing games, but Uncharted 3 was one of those rare games that had me fuming. Had a hard time pushing myself to finish the game despite really enjoying everything else that wasn't combat.

Try 1, skip 2. U2 is actually very similar to 3 and that is the only logical explanation why 3 gets so much hate.

I myself like 2 and 3 but hate 1. May be the other way around for you.

Uncharted 1 is actually a fantastic game. Reason it gets crap today is because of how unrefined and outdated it feels after experiencing the sequels and later third-person shooters, which really isn't fair to it... but it is definitely something you gotta deal with. But if you were lucky to experience it during the time it was incredible.

Uncharted 2 was even moreso and the extra great thing is it has aged like a fine wine, it doesn't feel outdated at all.

If you do play 1 tho, definitely play it before 2. Because while you do have the gameplay refinement of 3 in your system, after playing 2 you will find playing 1 probably at the summit of unenjoyable because 2 basically has the same exact story execution, I can't really explain what I mean without going full on spoilers.

2 is much more like TLoU. Better battles and set pieces and a good story. Each encounter actually feels special and the pacing is amazing.

1 and 3 are much the same, shooting waves of enemies as they come in for no good reason.

Everybody should play 2 at least.

It's not. If you didn't like 3 you might not like 2 that much. If you do it will be only slightly more.
2 is so much better paced than 3 it's not even funny. I can see someone thinking 3 dragged, and liking 2.

Agreed, I played through 2 and 3 for the first time a few months ago. And aside from some pacing problems in 3 I barely noticed a difference.

Didn't find UC2 that fun to begin with anyway, hated the shooting parts.

1 is nowhere near as good as 2 or 3. While I was dissapointed in 3, 2 is an absolute masterpiece.

Stay away from 1, its appalling.

I noticed Uncharted 1 and 2 were on sale on UK PSN, I wasn't a huge fan of the 3rd game, it just seemed to drag on and on, I loved TLOU but that's a different beast, I was wondering if it was worth picking up 1/2?

Thoughts?

All 3 games are great. Don't see how you'll like any of the ther 2 if you don't like 3. Don't know why everyone's saying stay away from 1 at all either.

I think they are all very good.

If you don't like 3 then don't buy the other ones imho, as they are pretty similar.

2 is arguably the most polished one, 3 has the best shooting and some crazy locales but is more disjointed, 1 is just a great feel good game that is a great introduction to the series.

Playing 3 first was a silly thing to do really.

Don't know why everyone's saying stay away from 1 at all either.

People are zany, game is almost 8 (!!!) years old now and its still cool. Maybe a bit dated now, but yeah, its an old game.

I think the first two games are very strong experiences, the second being the best in my opinion. I feel the third game felt like a parody of the last two. Every damn level was just setpiece after setpiece, every ledge collapsed or moved... it was like they tried to make it too Uncharted.

Play the original for an experience that set the world and playstyle in motion, then play the second for the improved controls and gunplay.

seeing as how 1 and 2 are better than 3, of course.

I feel like the main reason why U3 was kind of a disapointement is that it was too similar to U2, it didn't have its novelty effect. The 3 games are very similar gameplay wise, so if you didn't bother finishing 3, you can skip the other two games. Also a huge part of the appeal of U1 and U2 was the technical performance, it's not that these games aged badly, but we're hardly impressed by PS4 and Xbox One games, so you'll most likely won't be wowed.

Uncharted 1 is a fine game. It feels a little "generic" in that it lacks gigantic setpieces of its sequels i.e. it isn't trying its hardest to be a movie, but the writing, characters, and sense of adventure are all there.

Uncharted 2 ramped things up. The pacing is fantastic as ND knew when to fire on all cylinders and when to let the player breathe (conversely, the engines don't stop in U3). I'd say that it takes everything that was done well in the first game and elevates it--the setpieces are very, very well done and still feel a little grounded (obviously nothing in this game is realistic, but the natural progression of the story/events never feels super contrived like that of U3). The story gets more complex as you understand the characters better. HOW MANY MEN HAVE YOU KILLED? It's nothing introspective or extremely deep, but ND added more dimension to the cast in this one. Also, this game features the train level aka one of the most stunning things visually and every faux michael bay game dev's wet dream. Crazy climax.

Uncharted 3 is a fun popcorn palette cleanser. It doesn't reach for anything meaningful and it throws away any chance of that by lacking guts (peep the Sully arc). The setpieces are damn good and memorable, but they come too often and almost beat the player over the head. THE MANSION IS BURNING. THE BOAT IS SINKING. THE PLANE IS CRASHING. It's a blast to play but amidst all of the craziness you lose a GOAL and feel like you're being carried from one big event to the next. Which is fine if that's what you are there for.

All three share common problems like not being the best shooters and containing plenty of low risk climbing sequences that get a little tedious (U2 comments on this a lot having drake say stuff like "oh god not more of this" etc and I find that funny) and having weird mythological third acts that never deliver like the earlier stages of each game. So if you find something intrinsicly wrong with the way one of the games plays, you're going to disagree with it in the rest of the trilogy too. However, I'd still suggest giving Uncharted 2 a shot as imo it is the most meaningful of the three and it's undoubtedly a landmark title of last generation. If anything, you can make your own opinion on it.
