Digital Board Games Thread: Async Multiplatform Meeples

i really hope that the coding monkeys don't update carc's graphics to match the new and "improved" carc 2.0's artwork

Nooo I missed out on Star Realms because I'm laaaaaazy T_T

So out of curiosity how was the last game? What ship/base made a big impact? What seemed like a good strategy, for what you could do in Star Realms? :3

Do you have different accounts? I've made 2 games and you ended up with a different name, glitch?

Hmmm dunno, I just have one account and invited you to the game we are actually playing right now.
You invited me 2 times to a 3 players game but I couldn't accept because I haven't the expansions.

To be honest I hated the game but I'm now re evaluating it.

aw waterdeep is pretty fun, especially with the expansions. it's pretty much perfect for async

Indeed it is so far, even if I do not like that much games with hidden score.

I still have no clue why in the world Playdek insists in a mandatory online login screen...it really detracts in a almost flawless async implementation making slower an already slow loading.

Also...maybe it's just me (I do not recall this problem in ascension) but I receive proper notification only on the last device I used, not both.

I'm reevaluating the game myself. Tried a few times on the base and was meh but played locally with friends who insist on using all expansions and liked how it opened things up. Now I've come around to limiting expansions cuz when you can't starve resources, it's more and more a solitaire game.

Are you gonna try an XP or should we start a 3/4P on base?

I think the expansions are more for higher play counts. Kind of like Carc actually. I wouldn't want to play all expansions with 2-3.

So I just want to thank you all, Astrolad in particular (and his excellent OP), about Waterdeep...that was forgotten on my devices since maybe a year.

I just came late at work because of it...I guess it means I'm now digging the game.
I still suck badly at it and do not like some things, but I tried a different approach on the game (or the timing was just right now) after The Witcher (a game I prefer but it's not async sadly) and now I'm seeing why it's so popular.
I'll probably end up buying the expansions too.

Speaking of The Witcher....I simply LOVE the game (Geralt and Triss play both similar to an evolved Elder Sign: Omens) but I really really REALLY hope they will add async.
The tension in the final quest in a 3 Quests, 4 players game is unparalleled.

I redownloaded the game before getting The Witcher because I saw it mentioned several times...and this time it clicked too.
Bought the game when it first came out but after a bit I deleted it (I had probably other games ongoing in which I was interested more back in the days, can't remember).
I always felt I was missing something, especially every time I read the OP.
I think I'll buy the expansions in the future (no idea in what they are or do yet).

pitta, i've postponed downloading lost cities until final exams are over

carcassonne is proving to be enough of a distraction as it is since all of my textbooks are digital :p

Who has GT on here? I hop on but it seems quite hard to get a live game. I mean it's cool they made a new async mode but I think live is where it's at. (At least I got to play IRL yesterday :P)

Popping in here to share some frustration. It just came to my attention that there actually was a recent Kickstarter campaign to make a digital version of one of my favorite board games as a child: Key to the Kingdom (shown below is the Spanish version)!

Why oh why did I not know about this sooner? And why oh why did it fail so miserably, with only 1,457 of 22,000 dollars being collected? They even had the orginal designer, Paul Bennett, on board - who is a great guy by the way and someone who I myself had the pleasure to discuss the game with over email in 2011 (when he shared with me that he had actually completed a design for a follow-up to the game that unfortunately was never picked up by his publishers, and that he had also written a Goonies/Harry Potter-esque novel about the first game in which children use the game's board as a treasure map that also got shelved when the actual Harry Potter book exploded on the scene...).

Sure, the original game is not perfect, but it is a very interesting game with an extemely big and beautiful board that delivers a real (Legend of Zelda-esque) sense of adventure. It would have been worth it to have a digital Legacy version with some improvements and a single player mode etc. Heck, if only for nostalgia alone.

If only the creators had thought about contacting James Rolfe, aka Board James. He loves the game as well, and I'm sure his help with promoting the Kickstarter would definitely made a difference. But alas, it probably will never happen now, just as Key to the Kingdom 2.

(Great thread by the way guys - a treasure cove of recommendations for those that seek them.)

sorry for dbl posting

I'm kinda hesitant to buy the double deck expansion

Async games take a long time to complete as it is

anyone disagree and think dbl decks are worth having?

I think if you played a lot of 4-5 player games with the base set it might be worth getting.
Sometimes you get a run of tiles that don't give you a lot of options ("oh, another road") and then the game is over.

oh, the base set! thanks for clarifying. i see your point. my only reservation is games taking two-three months before scoring. :p
I'm up for any and all Carc games. Invite me!
sending an invitation your way!

Days of Wonder stuff is on sale.
Took advantage of it and got Small World...I briefly played a game...no idea of what I'm doing but it seems really well done.
I saw on the friends list (linked to the GC accounts) many of you have the game....is anyone still playing it?

Ascension just hit Steam. $10 but includes all 5 expansion packs. Apprently it doesn't run too well and lacks alot of the promised features from the PC Kickstarter.

It's basically the same as the iOS version. But to be fair, they have said they're working on the new features and will be updated at a later time (on all platforms).

The game itself crashes for me though, when I go into Options and when I try to go into an (online) game, so I would definitely wait to pay anything for it.

Played some Realms Unraveled last night. Good times. Hope the tournament system goes into place soon (think it's going into SW first? I'd actually be up for dusting off SW as well for a tournament.)

i bought galaxy trucker. if anyone wants to play, feel free to send me an invite later.

i'll be trying to complete ground zeroes in the mean time

And just when I was about to buy Lords of Waterdeep expansions....apparently there is a sale in place because they are both 1 dollar.

LoW, Agricola, Ascension honestly they are worth it at any price <$20. (Also in this list would be Carc and Galaxy Trucker.)

So I know iOS/Android/mobile async play is all the craze here, but anyone want to try and make plans to play a board game in real time using something like BoardGameArena, or VASSAL? It's a time investment and it'll be hard to get people online at the same time, but it'll feel more like playing a board game.

Anyway, just curious. I'd be up for pretty much any game that doesn't take over 2-3 hours.
