Digital Board Games Thread: Async Multiplatform Meeples

I've been having fun with Baseball Highlights 2045 -- which is currently only available on Android tablets but I think is coming out on iOS as soon as Apple approves it (so hopefully within the next week or so). No online play, but the Solo mode is really good, and you can do pass and play if you happen to have a companion and not own the board game. One of my games of 2015 for sure, and this is a very faithful if low-frills implementation.

did not know this was on android... perhaps it's time to get it so I can learn how to play my physical copy i own lol

woah what is this?

Baseball Highlights 2045

Pros
-Completely faithful recreation of an excellent board game.
-Good baseball "feel" in a totally light game, which means it's fun for both baseball fans and people who don't care about baseball. Definitely not remotely a sim though.
-Has good tutorials for both game owners (like me -- wished I learned it on here instead of through rules + watch-it-playeds :P) and new players.
-Solo mode is very well designed and pretty addictive (try to beat Normal, then Hard, then Very Hard -- so far I've gotten past Hard)
-Currently Android tablets only, but soon to be on iOS.

Cons
-No campaign mode or stat-tracking, so it's going to be one-offs of the Solo game (which has five difficulty levels, and is totally random, so decent replayability) or pass-and-play with someone local.
-Barebones in terms of UI and sound -- almost to the extent where the sounds are kind of cheesy but I think they actually work really well with the game, which doesn't take itself seriously.
-No online. Game would be one of my top iOS games if it had online modes. As it is I'd say still very recommended.

Puzzle Strike is now available on iOS.

For those who don't know, it's a fusion of Dominion deck-building and Capcom's Puzzle Fighter, designed by David Sirlin (Puzzle Fighter HD Remix, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix). Each player chooses a character and gains three corresponding unique cards/chips; round-by-round play is similar to Dominion, but with the goal of forcing your opponent's gem pile fill up (10+ gems on the end of their turn) by combining and crashing gems (instead of collecting victory points). The physical version looks like this:

I really like Puzzle Strike -- apart from the chips-in-place-of-cards gimmick, it's my favorite Dominion-inspired game -- but the UI/UX in the iOS version is merely tolerable. I realize it is a port of the online/PC version, but the tap-to-play, hold-to-zoom interface is awkward, and the layout (with tap targets for the bag and discard being so small and close and the chips in the bank being illegible unless individually zoomed) is painful.

The game itself is still definitely worth the money (and the single-player content is great), but I really wish the UI/UX was redesigned for touch and the phone/tablet form factor.

Keep meaning to post that this is out on iOS now and I agree with your assessment. It's a great game even if the app itself is a bit low rent. I'd kill for some online.

Oh man, this game is fantastic. Planned on just playing the tutorial, but it sucked away my whole evening. Too bad it doesn't have async!

Not a big fan of Sirlin but yeah Puzzle Strike is quite a fun game. It's too bad Playdek never seemed to get their gaming platform off the ground. Wish I could get more of these games async (Baseball Highlights with async tournaments would be amazing).

Ok now you guys got me back into Puzzle Strike (Steam) haha. Implementation is very well done -- I just wish the chips would zoom in when you hovered instead of having to click on them. Honestly UI should be able to support readable text without zooming on full screen. They should also highlight chips legal to play and buy at all times. Game is excellent though and as an owner of the board game (and expansion) it's nice not to have to do any of the accounting or rules tracking.

Can you play Puzzle Strike against AI opponents?

Kinda feels like that's all you can do. I'm looking right now and there are literally two online games going on. Assuming that's for all platforms that's a pretty troubling number.

Aside from that it's a solid game, though not without a few annoyances:

- the text on the screen can be confusing, putting a huge button up that says "buy a wound and end turn" when you should actually be purchasing a chip. You get used to it fast, but it's still awkward.

- If someone plays something that makes you discard a chip, you have to click "Don't React," then discard your chip.

- The undo button is hidden in the menu for some reason.

- The game waits for you to make a choice when there's only one choice to make a lot. I finally got in a game while typing this and my opponent played a "Color Panic," where he chose a color blue. I had to discard a chip of that color or show a hand without it. I didn't have one, so the instruction text at the top said to click "OK." The actual button said "Don't React" which I clicked (I didn't have any reaction chips in my hand either). I would much prefer a window that popped up for a few seconds that said "opponent chose blue, you reveal a hand with no blue chips) for a couple seconds.

Overall a great game, but not a great implementation. And if there's no one out there to play it'll end up being a waste of money for me.

Just downloaded Patchwork and really enjoy the implementation even though I've already beaten the AI on Hard :P. Had never played before and the game teaches you in a couple minutes. Looks like the online is broken right now so caveat emptor. But for three bucks just learning the game and playing a few times it's more than worth it. :P

I'm downloading Patchwork now.
I've played the cardboard version so looking forward to this.
Fingers crossed for multiplayer.

Also coming out soon/today is Glass Road if the email from the developer is right.

Multi-Rosenberg!

Patchwork seems great... Except once you select a piece and go to the board, you can't go back to see the next pieces? This caught me out a few times.

Is there a way to do that on iphone that I missed?

if you mean an undo button, then I can't see one.
I hope your ability to visualise how the pieces will fit isbetter than mine :D

On an unrelated note

It looks like someone else will implement Dominion online after 31/12/2016
(please be Playdek)

lol poor Making Fun. The game finally actually works halfway decent, but they're losing it anyway. I'm with you on Playdek. Or maybe Coding Monkeys. If it's someone like Big Daddy I'm going to be pissed. >__<

Uh oh - I hadn't heard about the debacle and completely forgot about that game. What happened? Am I about to experience my first kickstarter fail?

http://kotaku.com/unsung-story-is-a-660-000-kickstarter-disaster-1732312002

Man I had heard about this but didn't realize it was Playdek. I kept wondering why they slowed down so much. Their website hasn't been updated in years.

edit: They are also doing the Twilight Struggle digital version, which seems to be getting updates regularly on Kickstarter. So there's that at least.

It's so weird. In boardgaming circles, Playdek is respected for making good digital ports of games. It seems to me like they raised the bar for what is now becoming a steady stream of decent digital releases.

However, on GAF and other videogame-oriented websites, Playdek is this scummy company with a scam kickstarter, and they ruined this 'dream project', "Final Fantasy Tactics sequel' with Matsuno.

The thing is, I feel like maybe Matsuno worked with these guys specifically because of an interest in tabletop games. The last game he did was Crimson Shroud, which was explicitly a dicefest miniatures dungeon crawler on your 3DS.

I feel like the developers were thinking of a multiplayer-focused tabletop game, while the hordes of backers that jumped onboard had a single-player PS1 RPG in mind.

Yeah, I really hope they are able to bounce back from that. Feel like mobile tabletop gaming has taken a pretty big dip the last few years, and it's largely due to their declining output. Maybe things will bounce back in 2016 -- been a pretty decent start so far and if TS makes it out that could really boost things. That Unsung Story thread was frustrating b/c like 5% of people knew Playdek was a really solid dev with quite a history, but ultimately it does look like the naysayers, even if some of them were misinformed/ignorant, proved out to be right. :/

Oh, and how about people griping that Obsidian is developing the Pathfinder ACG digital version? People on gaming side seem completely confused by that one.

Man that's disappointing. I've only backed two kickstarters, both from companies I I had faith could deliver the product (the other was Harmonix with their Amplitude reboot). Hopefully it'll have some redeeming qualities if it finally comes out.

In this year's "What's going on with the mobile port of Dominion?" news:

Making Fun CEO said:
Making Fun will manage Dominion Online through December 31, 2016. That is when the license granted by Rio Grande Games expires, and Donald X. and Rio Grande Games have decided to not renew it. We understand that they have engaged a different developer to create a new Dominion Online for 2017, and that development started several months ago. Donald and Jay from Rio Grande Games told me that they intend to offer it immediately after our license expires on December 31, 2016, so there will be a continuation of service for players.

If you purchase or have already purchased a Dominion expansion set in v1 or v2 you will also have it in the new 2017 Dominion experience. Just as we honored all v1 purchases in our new v2, Donald and Jay have committed to honoring your previous purchases in their new version.

Dominon tabletop creator, Donald X. Vaccarino chimes in:

We anti-renewed with MF because we were unhappy and then still unhappy and then still unhappy. I don't need to yell at them here about the specifics, but uh. I felt like we gave them a good long chance. It would be easier not to switch, but we're switching.

For sure we will carry over old accounts; no-one will have to re-buy expansions (provided there isn't an unexpected sale to try to take advantage of us; why do I have to mention that but I guess I do).

As I like to point out, MF were picked out for us by essentially a random stranger (the woman who became the head of Goko when the company otherwise died and the original people left). They got the project without any say on our part. And we still stood behind them for longer than was reasonable.

Patchwork is very legit. Takes me back to the early days of Carcassonne. Just start a bunch of games and take your turns whenever you want to (within 24h, so the games move at a good pace). There's Elo too which is always fun to chase. Helps that the game itself is pretty great, though I'm sure there are strategy articles that spoil a bit of the discovery but I've avoided those.

I like it, I still haven't beaten the AI though :D
Some niggles though.
You can't go back and see how you did after a game is over.
I know I lost our game because I saw a notification telling me (boo spoilers), when you go back in the game has vanished.
It would be nice to have a rematch option.
I think it could do with letting you try the piece before committing.

This new (ahem) patch for Patchwork fixes a few things. Red number notifications are working, and it brings you straight to the game if you hit the notification when it pops up.
Much nicer!

Oh this looks like a cool thread to watch.
I've been playing a lot of star realms on my android phone. Pretty addicted and looking for more asymmetrical.

Did searching on amazon which sold me on galaxy trucker, so I'll try that out soon. And keeping an eye on splendor.

May have to check out this patchwork.

Yeah they even added a Next Game button which was pretty much my only issue. Close to being on a level with Carcassonne now.

Ok answering my own question above, Faeria is really good! I've been playing off and on all week and really enjoying it. It's simple to get into like Hearthstone, but the area control element adds some nice strategy to the standard rush/control deck dynamics. Definitely worth checking out if you like digital CCGs. If nothing else, put it on your Steam wishlist and watch for official release ($25 now, will be free to play at launch sometime this year).

If anyone is playing I'm Slacker on there too.

Anyone check out "Faeria" yet? According to them, it's Hearthstone meets Catan. The video on their page looks pretty slick. I may have to check it out this week if I can tear myself away from Factorio.

Kripp is supposed to be playing it on his stream today. I guess you both sold out :p

I think it looks ok, but the chances of it taking off are about the same as blizzard releasing good shaman cards.

Yeah a game is only good if there are people playing. Puzzle Strike is fun but their online version is a ghost town. :( I'm encouraged so far that I've never waited more than a few seconds for a game in Faeria. Hopefully it'll do well once it's official.

Another digital board game on Steam: Gremlins Inc. Good reviews but I haven't learned anything about it yet. Will watch the "WTF is" video about it sometime soon.

Really enjoying Faeria. Look for "Slacker" if anyone else is playing.

And Twilight Struggle is supposed to be "late March" so I'll be keeping an eye out for that too. I'm very curious how it's going to sell, as apparently Playdek is counting on it keeping them alive until Unsung Story is released.

Gremlins is pretty fun, not my favorite though. The program itself is well made though.

Yep. I learned of it from Kripp. Looks fun and it's supposed to be F2P in September. I'll wait until it's F2P.

i picked up Patchwork, tried to send out a few friend requests. same name in game.

no Next Game option on Android yet from what i can see. it's already bugging me.

edit: i was wrong, the button is there, is just amazingly small!
