Digital Board Games Thread: Async Multiplatform Meeples

Is it suggested to get all the expansions for Ascension? Looks like I'm about 3-4 behind.

I don't see the need to buy them all, given that each big expansion should ideally be played alone or only with its associated mini-expansion.

since I don't think it was mentioned in this thread. back on march 29th it was announced that the pathfinder adventure card game app for IOS (and later android I think) was delayed to april 26th.

in different thoughts, anyone have a good list of upcoming digital board games?

Twilight Struggle apparently sometime today on Steam. Please buy it so Playdek has enough money to finish the game I kickstarted 2 years ago. :P

Also FYI Faeria can now be had for 9 bucks instead of $25 (the more expensive package comes with 20 booster packs). I'm really liking it still so check it out, folks (add Slacker in there if we're not already Steam friends).

I'll definitely try out TS. I was actually surprised to remember I didn't back it (I think it was because I already had the new GMT Deluxe edition and don't like to KS stuff unless I'm getting something fancy).

If anyone wants to play Twilight Struggle, I'm more than down for a game. Don't mind walking newbies through learning games either.

What's your name on there? I'm Slacker feel free to add.

CzarTim I hope you're bad at this game otherwise I'm about to bore you. :)

I'm also XiaNaphryz there. I see both you and CzarTim on my friends list already.

Do you guys play with Optional Cards? And I'm guessing Steam chat would be the easiest way to communicate.

Twilight Struggle is async too which is great as I don't get to spend long at the PC nowadays.

And it'll be cross-platform once the iOS and Android versions are out. Start a game on your PC at home, continue it on the road on your tablet (I don't imagine this would be great to work with on a smaller phone though).

I regularly played Le Havre on a tiny screen. I am ready :D

I keep forgetting that defcon going to 1 on your turn causes you to lose the game even if your opponent does the action that causes it to lower. Lost like 4 games to the ai like that followed by a massive facepalm each time.

Yeah, Defcon shenanigans are a big part of the meta-game.

Yay, digital board gaming. Haven't been around much, though I've been playing Ascension pretty much everyday still. As much as I liked Star Realms and the campaign missions they have, I'm really finding the newer expansions of Ascension to be really fun. Granted, the reason I like playing most deck-building games is because I like trying to get stupid-long combos. With a few of the promo cards, I've effectively made it so that I've gotten over 20,000 in Rune points alone.

Anyway, I just got Twilight Struggle, surprised I didn't KS this back when I had the chance, but added those of you who said they have it. If I didn't get you, feel free to add and invite me to a game. I'm LunarKnite.

Oh wow, TS cross-platform. Is that Playdek's first cross-platform thing? That's really cool if they pull it off. Will definitely double tip. Lunar got your invite -- I'll accept as soon as I pick up the game, probably tonight. Other folks can feel free to invite me as well. AstroLad

async so nothing to lose really with multiple games. :P

For anyone new to TS, just remember that the USSR has a big advantage in the Early War and the US pretty much has to hang on and try to make it through the Mid War when things start to even out. Late War the US has the advantage.

I saw a few TS game invites from folks, I'll try to hop on after work.

EDIT: Also, feel free to add me to you Steam friends list, I have the same name as on here or my Playdek account.

Dang -- caveat that I'll probably only be able to take turns at night (pacific time) during weekdays so will probably time out in some of these games if people take turns in morning :P Will be much easier to avoid that when this hits mobile. Currently rereading rules -- forgot all the little nuances but it's coming back now.

The tutorial's decent for beginners, so it should help give you a quick refresher on the rules. Strategy is a different matter of course.

There's a card reference as well if you want to skim through the card text.

Yeah, no idea how I missed that. Good stuff. Now I just need to play a few games against computer to sort of get back in the swing. Has anyone been able to win a Space Race roll against CPU? I swear I'm like 0/15 so far....

lol finally beat the CPU and it just blew up the world. probably had to choose between duck and cover to defcon NUKE (which it did) and euro scoring (instant win for me)

Sorry for the triple post, but Xia what is the best setting in terms of balance? Is it just leave everything as is and play with the optional cards? (That I heard balance things a little bit better for US.)

AFAIK Optional cards enabled is considered a bit more balanced. Some feel that's enough to balance things out between experienced players, others feel the US should also get +1 influence (added anywhere they already have influence).

I prefer Optional w/ no modifiers, but I'm far from an expert player still.

Cool that's what I was thinking too...although I'm barely a beginner player. :P (Though I do now remember all the rules...woohoo!)

So...is Twilight Struggle out worldwide on ios or just in the US? I can't find it here in my Dutch/EU store.

Sorry, I haven't been following its development and release closely but as soon as I saw the thread come up again I had to check and ask. I've always wanted to try this highly rated game and maybe with the help of the tutorial I can at least understand the basics before actually having to compete with someone.

Just Steam right now, iOS/Android is going to take a bit longer to come out.

Guessing the console ports are sometime after that.

On sale on Android too. Is it worth getting?

It's a good game. Nice presentation, and I like that the game auto-calculates how your income and population will change with each tile placement and show it to you before you end your turn. I still suck at the game and need to develop better stats though. I paid full price for it a month ago and thought it was worth it. Then again I used Google Reward cash so it was free.

Whew, good game there Astrolad. I was close to hitting 20 with Asia towards the end there but you kept eating away at my lead. Once you discarded Wargames, I was hoping to draw Star Wars and not worry about Final Scoring.

Haha yeah both our games were super fun. Makes me want to pull out my Deluxe but if I keep playing on here I'll probably wind up too good for playing new players. :p

Pick on new players with no mercy! Then your rating will be high enough that the other high ranked players will actually bother to play with you, heh...I've seen some of them state they'd only play with players at a certain rating floor given their current rating.

Oh yeesh haha...I've only been playing with gaffers.

Ah, I thought you meant new players as in the general populace.

Right sorry, I meant that if I play a few more games I'll really have nobody on my level here, and will be hard to play against new players (tabletop). TS is one of those games where knowledge of the dozens of cards is so important. Almost like an LCG/CCG in that way. I guess you could just handicap though.

App might be the only good way to play the Pathfinder ACG. I didn't really care to hold onto the physical version, but I'd take another look at this one.

I am looking forward to the app as I enjoy the game, just don't like their horrible scaling for more players as the balance is completely out of wack if you go to max number of players compared to 3 players due to a ton more areas to have to go through in the same 30 turn limit. (and extra blessings and what not help, but not enough to make up the difference)

I guess the one thing I'm wondering is - if the physical version's novelty was that you were replicating a RPG experience (whether it's P&P or videogame) by way of playing cards, rolling dice, and adding to your character's deck, then will a digital version just miss the point? Will it just feel like a very basic computer RPG?

I had no idea Pathfinder was coming this soon. Looking forward to it.

it was actually supposed to be out 2 months ago :P
their beta testers found to many bugs though so they delayed it.

that being said the bits and pieces I have seen didn't look bad so it will hopefully be a solid app.

Pathfinder is out right now in the AppStore.

Thanks! Played halfway through the tutorial mission but I must have skipped some guidance somewhere because I'm not quite sure how to get to the big bad. It's 'weird' to me that you can close locations and then re-open them? Did this by accident a few times hahah. Seems well done, though I don't know how the IAPs are implemented. Also personal preference but I find serious generic fantasy insanely boring so probably won't play around in this too much.
