Digital Foundry - Dying Light 2 (PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S)

Game looks great on consoles.

Xbox Series S limited to 30fps @ Native 1080p

Performance mode for Series X and PS5 runs at 1080p but at a smooth 60fps

Resolution Mode on PS5 runs at 1800p, 30fps.

Resolution Mode on Xbox Series X runs at 1944p on Xbox Series X, 30fps.

All three versions use SSR.

No definitive mode to pick, 60fps is fluid but the visuals of quality mode are a delight.

Quality mode adds RT shadows and Ambient Occlusion at a native 1080p/30fps.

Quality Mode shows way more improved shadows in exterior areas, having a huge impact.

Series S holds up in core visual features and is a rock solid 30fps the whole time, just no RT features.

PS5 and Series X run equally well on every mode, locked 60fps on performance mode, frame pacing very stable on all consoles.

Resolution mode has some brief dips under 30fps with slight screen tear on both consoles, only on rare occasions when diving into water (caused by alpha effects presumably)

Big shame that Techland couldn't merge modes together but great for the console owners to be able to pick what they want in terms of frame rate, resolution and graphical fidelity.

Sometimes I don't understand DF. The guy is over there saying the game looks great and I'm over here thinking that it doesn't look great at all...

Series S
- Single mode: 1080p 30fps not stable and a little more prone to screen-tearing.
- No ray tracing.
- It will be covered with last gen 30fps versions.

Series X / PS5
- Performance Mode: 1080p fixed with frame-rate targets - and doggedly locks - to 60 frames per second.
- Resolution Mode: 3200x1800 (PS5) / 3456x1944 (Series X) with fully locked 30fps in this mode, however, with only very, very minor dips beneath this with isolated effects (such as jumping into water).
- Quality Mode: 1080p, Ray-tracing and sticks unerringly to 30 frames per second.
- PS5 has additional shading on trees in Performance and Resolution modes.
- No mode is ideal well in their words:
The effects can be transformative then, but the trades to both resolution and performance are steep. It's hard to definitively say which mode is worth picking: I spent most of my play through on performance since 60fps matters most to me, but the ray-traced shadows and ambient occlusion are a genuine highlight on console.

1080p and 60 fps……

…I was really hoping these consoles could deliver more games at 1440p and 60 fps this gen…. Bleugh.

Let's be honest, this game is hardly a technical marvel. Look at the PC spec requirements as well, everything points towards it being unoptimised.

Seems also ps5 shadow work better and Xbox console is missed in some foliage.

Going to be waiting for a lot of patches before checking this game out.

Maybe by my Shocktober playthroughs it'll be ready.

1080p for 60fps or RT is pretty disappointing. Perhaps it's me, but the game is hardly a looker. It looks last gen as fuck and not even an impressive last gen game. What res are the older consoles running it on, below 720p?

Though 1080p 60fps for such games .... ggggh it has sort of reconstructed resolution as UE5 at least?

Produced the on paper difference between the consoles that exists on paper, 16-17% so what we would expect.
Series X for me then after watching this.

"There are reports of a variable refresh rate mode exclusive to Series X that unlocks the frame-rate on 120Hz screens but unfortunately, this was not functioning during the review period. It should be available soon and we'll report back on how well it functions"

Looking forward to seeing this.

Qualitymode4lyf

Indeed, 1080p is too low to get to 60fps for me. I'm just not sure whether to pick the Quality or Res mode, the Perf mode looks soft as hell at 1080p so the RT shadows/AO will have to be pretty damn amazing to make me okay with losing that many pixels.

I'm playing the UC Legacy collection just now and fidelity mode is just so much better for me, the loss of detail/sharpness (or rather back to the same sharpness of the PS4 Pro output) is stark in Perf mode, I couldn't do it once I'd seen Fidelity mode.

The missing tree shadows on SeX (like on the S) are more noticiable than the extra 144 horizontal lines of resolution, but all run the game the same.
It's a draw.
Which means a victory for the "weaker" contender.

I hate these new modes. Performance, Quality, and Resolution? GTFO with this nonsense. Just make the game look as good as it can at 60 and quit fucking around.

Damn... 1080p 60fps on PS5 and Series X, no 60fps on Series S. If it had a 60fps mode then would be 720p? Less? This seems a very bad optimization. Well will wait for a sale on this if i play it one day... just brought the first for $12 or $13 with all the dlc.

Well if you watch the video the Quality 30fps mode should be default.
It is the only way the game looks somehow interesting to play.

Said that the perfect mode should be a combination of Quality and Resolution.

Series X for you as always even without watch the video. But I should mark this. So finally you have admitted Hitman 3 resolution wasn't the normal gap expected?

This might get me banned, but im gonna say it, are we still waiting for tools? When is the 2tf gonna turn up, i wonder

It has, the 2tflops is 17% and the difference here is 16-17%.
Also we're getting a VRR mode for better framerates, being a last gen game I doubt it uses Tier 2 VRS or SFS which would increase Series console performance even more.
