Digital Foundry: Face-Off - Wolfenstein: The New Order

Such an awful engine.

No 1920x1080 = no buy.

Another game to the list... it is increasing :(

Despite asset parity, the level of anisotropic filtering is slightly higher on the consoles

Why do these guys even cover PC games at this point? No DF, the consoles don't have better then 16x AF you nitwits.

Sorry, I just find that VERY hard to believe. Surely you just weren't paying attention?

He said he didn't notice any, not that they weren't there.

Ive been playing it for a while but I've not noticed any either, I'm sure it probably is happening and I just haven't seen it..

Question.

When people say 'sub-HD', do they mean to say it is less than a full HD resolution, that it is less than 720p - the marketing minimum - or that it is less than SD?

Because to me, sub-HD could mean all of them. An SD signal is sub-HD, but so is 700p. That seems really bad terminology for measuring something.

sub-HD is anything less than 720p - that is 1280x720.

How does the dynamic framebuffer work anyway? How does the system know how long it will take to render the frame before it will render it? Or does it render one frame and then reduce for the next frames? But then wouldn't you see framespikes?

I'm not trolling guys.

It was a serious comment... I'm avoiding every non 1080p game from the new systems... I played BF4 on PS3 due this restriction and I will do the same with Watch Dogs.

Every non-1920x1080p game I will buy on old gen consoles.

I expect to not do that this gen but I was forced because the games are not reaching this level.

It is my money after all ;)

To be fair, officially speaking, the PC version only supports 4x AF. Higher values are only achievable through the console, which needs to be enabled with a launch argument, or config editing, plus the higher value has to be re-enabled upon every level load, so it isn't considered.

Yeah but there are some games that require great graphics for atmosphere and then there are games that are just 'fun'. I've seen lots of Youtube videos of this game and it looks a lot of fun.

dude, its MOSTLY 1080p on both vonsoles. they only drop occasionally and usually not long enough to notice. Don't gimp yourself with the ps3 version. but it is your money.

Wait, why are you buying versions that are even worse?

Like I said before, the PS4 version is pretty much 1920x1080 for the entirety of the game. One split second did it drop when a lot of dismemberment and explosions happened and another during a setpiece moment. That was it.

Why do these guys even cover PC games at this point?

I've noticed that even though DF usually winds up saying that the PC version is the best, they seem to downplay some advantages of PC ports. Like, they'd include PC screens at 720p to compare with PS3/360 shots instead of getting involved with >1080p or supersampling.

Wait, are you seriously buying vastly inferior versions of games because of... principle?

TMYK. Seems like a waste with an engine pipe that historically has brought in the licensing clams.

Wonder if they'll be using it for FO4. Gamebryo needs to die.

I'm pretty sure that Carmack mentioned at one point that idTech 5 was not a good fit for the scale of Bethesda's games. Rage was somewhat open-world, but it's a far more limited experience than the freedom you get with Fallout or TES.

Or have it set to 16x in the drivers, which anyone with a PC that is 10 years old or newer should do.

So you're going to buy the worst version possible instead of playing the good version because of some dynamic resolution used to maintain 60 fps? Lol people on this site, shit every day baffles me.

Ill rent the game one day. Sure as hell not buying it on PC (unless its 5 dollars or something). The article even comments on the PC issues.

Because it is a console that is really worse... I want just the best on the better console.

That's my opinion and I understand the points and comments of everybody else.

Come on ... you're just being stubborn. Give yourself a couple of days and then decide. You wouldn't want to cut off your nose to spite your face. I know you better than that.

More power to you.

Sooo PS3/360 versions are locked 60? Not bad, IdTech.

Good Lord. Maybe was better not buy ps4 at this point if you expected 1080p in all the multiplat.

ethomaz is going to end up buying a lot of shitty versions of good games.
I'm fine with that ;) I know I will miss games or play them in old platforms but it was my decision before the gen started.

Guys, just move on... I didn't know a simple opinion can cause so much buzz ;)

Sure, but that's beside the point. What I'm getting at is that higher AF values aren't factored in because they're not officially supported by the game and DF has always compared versions as they exist readily; config editing, driver-level improvements and mods have never played into these head-to-heads. You're getting mad at DF for something it's always done. ;) If you want enthusiast comparisons then that's what OTs and (where applicable) PC performance threads are for -- another way to put it would be that DF compares consumer products as they exist out of the box.

Alternatively, just force 16x AF through console and never worry about it again.

I just wanna say I hope you reconsider this stance because as it stands, you're paying the same money for a worse product, even though you already bought the other (pretty expensive!) product that allows you to have the much better experience.

Of course PS4 will be better-looking. But XB1 owner here saying Wolfenstein looks fantastic so far, in case anyone is worried about it just looking plain bad. Dat frame rate.

both versions look good to me, perhaps it's me, I watched the video a few times, and couldn't see any noticeable differences. perhaps its me.

I'm fine with that ;) I know I will miss games or play them in old platforms but it was my decision before the gen started.

But WHY? It just makes no sense that the PS4 version of a game not being completely optimal would make you prefer getting an even worse version. Really, no sense at all.

.

Unfortunately even this doesn't cause it to 'stick', anytime you die or reload checkpoint it will reset any AA or AF values typed in the console.

You guys are mad.

Give me dynamic resolution all day, every day for constant 60fps.

What do a few less pixels matter?

Having now completed our analysis, it's clear that the PS4 gains an advantage with smaller drops in resolution that occur less frequently than they do on Xbox One. Metrics in the area of 1760x1080 are found on PS4, while on the Xbox One this can drop to an extreme of 960x1080 in some scenes.

There's no clear winner here
I mean, seriously?

Might as well just buy a PC if you strive for 1080p everything.
