Digital Foundry Tech Analysis: Titanfall

The worst? Really?

Realllly?

For next-gen, definitely. Not like it's worst looking game that was at the show in general. Graphically it looked like an up-res'd CoD game. The new CoD Ghost game doesn't look great either but it's at least doing a few new things with tech like tesselation to make it a step up from their current gen games.

Because the Source engine is hugely CPU core speed limited, poorly multithreaded, and the CPU in the next gen consoles isn't all that powerful.

Lowering the resolution would do NOTHING to alleviate cpu performance problems, that is all on the gpu.
edit: and memory bandwidth

This is the second thread ive seen where somebody criticizes the game for not being as fast as Quake.

Its not trying to be.And yes aiming down the sights slows things down. So?

that's another thing, people keep bringing up the "it's fast"

now look at those 2 gifs and compare it to this

this game has literally fuck all in common with both fast based PC shooters of today and the classic arena based shooters of yesterday, so when I keep hearing about how it invokes those feeling I'm questioning if you guys are just responding on impulse of shit you want to believe or if you guys have ever truly played any of those games at all

Can we quit it with the false equivalency and accept this for what it is, which is Call of Cuty with robots that lets you bounce off walls from time to time, in sub HD with an old as fuck ass engine
It's not fast absolutely. It's fast relatively to other shooters on consoles.

And it's not sub-HD. It's at most sub-fullHD and the game is still under actively development with a release date 9 months out.

Would be more fun if things weren't slown down because of something like ironsights which personally i feel have no place in a game like this anyway.

the rough-looking textures on Titan interiors and billboards, and what seem like scaling artifacts that betray either Titanfall's early development status, or its commitment to being about gameplay first, appearances second. The jaggies are a curious point in particular; even judged by the high quality feed we have availability direct from the Microsoft E3 conference there's more sub-pixel shimmering and rough edges than any other game on show

this was quite apparent during E3 in the gameplay videos i saw. almost like an awkward "crisp" quality to it.

PC will have servers too...you think PC players will be playing on non-dedicated servers? Lol.

pc has dedicated servers too you know.

Yes... I am fully aware both versions have dedicated servers. Respawn has stated they wont have the "niceties" of the Xbox One version because of the lack of the cloud.

I thought this was pretty obvious to anyone actually following the conversation.

I am a PC gamer. No need to get so defensive.

I mean even that dev quote about how the maps are designed to balance out the engagements between the mechs *sorry* Titans and pilots by having areas where pilots can go and titans can't etc, like that suppose to be fucking revelation, congratulations you've designed multiplayer maps no different than the multiplayer maps that have existed for every single multiplayer shooter that supports vehicles ever released

When did the devs ever say that balanced maps were some kind of innovation in the field? This is a goofy ass thing to whine about

Bah I still don't know what to feel about this game. The mechs don't do anything for me so it really comes down to whether or not it's a fully featured well balanced multiplayer FPS. I guess I'll see what the PC community thinks for 2-3 weeks after launch, and then if consensus seems very positive I'll probably jump in. Or maybe just wait for the PS4 edition with all the DLC included or whatever they end up doing with that. Might be a long wait but I'm not in a huge rush considering BF4 will exist.

Guess I just gotta wait and see.

All platforms including PC will have their dedis hosted in the cloud:

And theyÂ’ll host our game servers for other platforms, too! Titanfall uses the Xbox Live Cloud to run dedicated servers for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

I remember the "niceties" quote you're talking about but I don't really know what it refers to.

You do know that the cloud is a buzzword for servers yes?

But I think the game target the CoD/BFcrowd not the old school guys, do they really want mechs and 3D platforming/jumping?

well even the mechs(Titans) are very generic looking, the overall design is just lacking and leave a lot to be desired.
They sort of look like Lego Bionicles. But I like how they animate.

I don't think looks are going to make or break the game. The best looking console games aren't necessarily the best sellers. The only thing that would doom it out the gate is if they completely screw up the balance.

Not necessarily. The GPU depends on the CPU to feed it information on what to render, lowering the resolution would lessen that load.
One of the signs of being CPU limited is that changing the resolution has no affect on performance.

Source doesn't strike me as a particularly CPU heavy game engine, and there's a 60fps Source game on the 360 already.
