[Digital Foundry] The Witcher 3: PS5 vs Xbox Series X Hands-on - Ray Tracing + 60FPS Modes Tested

Soooo... seeing how crap releases are nowadays, I might just get Witcher for ps5 if they make new disc release of this.
But I have w3 on steam, so I will check upgrade there first. Its free
It just looks different. Not necessarily better
I swear you have to be a troll.

Why would that be?
It's free so any improvement is ok but it just looks a bit better.....
And 4k30 is letdown.
The RT effects shown here are not worth sacrificing 30fps. Could be 4k60 with other effects pumped up if they didn't do the barely visible RT crap
And why would you care since "Callisto Protocol plays great at 30fps"?

You downplay the much improved RT effects, textures, and LOD and give us some bullshit about it "not looking better, just different", then you have the nerve to turn around and say a 30fps game plays great. GTFO.

So it seems a good update? I'll definetly give it a try. I also never played Blood and Wine so this could be the perfect time 👀

it's not much improved. It looks BARELY different even side by side.
And witcher 30fps is terrible. You downplay the importance of low lag 30fps with good motion blur.
Callisto does have some of best motion blur to date and more games could use it. That's why Naughty dog games play and look good at 30fps.

The video shown today does not impress me. it looks framey and just different... ok maybe a bit better? subjective?

It's time for pro versions of the consoles. Series X and PS5 only getting half the raytracing features? Wow. Don't waste your time in the 30 fps mode. Especially if you're on Series S since it doesn't get any ray tracing features at 30 fps at all.
Just get a PC, it will cost $1000 for a GPU but you can get all the features at the resolution and frame rate you are willing to pay for.

Anyone buying a console for all this stuff is inevitably going to be disappointed, but it seems people never ever learn.

If you're blind or a troll, sure. You're probably both. Does it look amazingly different? No but the differences, especially when it comes to the lighting in interior scenes are glaring and the SSR is vastly improved.

No, I think 30fps plays like shit regardless of motion blur.

They still play like shit. Just slightly less so.

It's basically a remaster of a 7 year old game. Why would it impress you? But to claim that it doesn't look better "just different" is utterly moronic.

I'm invested in the Xbox ecosystem at this point. My main game is Elder Scrolls Online which is tied to Xbox completely. No cross progression. I've got probably 50 days /played and hundreds of dollar spent on cosmetics. And I own a huge catalogue of digital and some physical games. It's just not that simple for me.

Also I do have a PC but it's from 2015. It's got a 1060 6gb, i5 4590, 16gbddr3 ram and a samsung ssd. It's basically a google chrome machine it won't play many games anymore.

The power of modern GPUS/CPUs are increasing rapidly and the 2020 consoles are quickly being left behind.

Stop calling me a troll because you don't agree with me you fucking idiot.
lol wtf

And yes. 30fps plays good if it's done well. You clearly don't know that and what it takes to make that. Play Callisto protocol or a ND game... or something Idk I am not your mom

I'm actually really considering the 30fps mode this time. If the framerate is stable and they didn't screw up latency, the visual difference seems quite substantial in many scenes to at least give it a try. I was fine with the PS4 version and even played it at 30 on PC for a while. A 40fps mode seems like a lost chance though.

Gets very boring to constantly read complaints about 30fps when there’s a 60 fps mode like… the option is there will you just shut the fuck up about how bad you think 30fps is?

Almost every single game last ten was 30fps we pretending 30fps is unplayable or something? Enthusiasts can be so boring to listen to.

The moment people stop complaining is the moment 60fps modes are dropped because marketing teams find it easier to market 30fps games that look slightly better.

Don’t be ridiculous, performance/quality options are now the standard. The only data that matters now is how many people choose one vs the other, but considering most games seem to come with the performance as default I don’t see it becoming a problem.

Shame that no one has looked into what improvements have been made to Yennefer's hips.

10 more days.

When the consoles were announced most people didn't think RT would make it in at all. Considering RDNA2's RT performance it would be crazy to expect all of them, even most PC's will struggle to get playable framerates with all 4 features. Still, the 2 most important ones made it in. I'd consider it a win for the hardware. It's still a bit too soon for pro versions, if we get them at all.

Where's that Chinese guy trying to read a small paper gif? I'm like that trying to find a difference that makes me think it would be worth sacrificing performance mode... That RT is not worthy imo, when games are made from the beginning using RT lighting is when it's worth it, even freaking Fortnite with lumen lighting makes a big difference

Then play it on a PC capable of 4k 60fps RT. There is the solution for your problem. A $500 console to do 4k res or high res plus 60fps plus RT. On top of that AMD is behind Nvidia with the RT performance... this is a free update for a 2015 game. Don't play it on console or don't play the game at all.

Wait is that that next gen patch?, because if it is it looks way worse than the 'HD Reworked Project' mod on PC. Although i did expect that to be fair.

What time is it?
You really don't think the 2028 consoles would be more powerful than a 4090? It's 6 years away man. The best GPU in 2014 (which was 6 years before SeriesX/PS5 was a 980). Why would you think that?

RT is expensive. Modern GPUs are really expensive and power hungry. An RTX 4090 is $1599.00 and draws up to 450 Watts. The PS5/XSX are $400.00-500.00 devices that top out at about 200 Watts. So even if you want to inflate the price and wattage for the next generation in 2028, they probably aren't going to go above $600 and I doubt they'd come anywhere near 300 Watts. They'll punch above their weight being dedicated devices and will have new tech with better efficiencies but it's unrealistic to think they'll bridge that gap in price/power. The current consoles are still chasing the 4K dream.

We just had 2 major games recently without performance modes. So it’s not the standard unless Sony/Microsoft force games devs to include it.

Ray tracing just keeps delivering the smallest graphical visual improvements at the highest cost ever, well done.
The thing with ray tracing for me is that if you weret already told, how many people would know it was even ray tracing being used?. I mean imagine watching the vid in the op, but DF never mentioned RT,. how many people would even realize RT was being used?.

Okay I see what you're saying. Modern GPUs aren't the same as the ones back then. Still can't help but be disappointed by the lack of features and 60 fps in some titles only 2 years into the generation.

Almost no one I guess, but a red engine specific ENB would have done miracles for sure :messenger_grinning_squinting:

One glimmer of hope is that the next consoles will probably be targeting the same resolution which hasn't happened in a while. Combine that with reconstruction techniques improving by the day and we've got something to look forward to.

He also says later that he would choose performance mode because RT is not worth the drop in framerate.

Yep. I gotta say that during the DF video I didn't see a super big difference but this guy played it for three hours, so he would definitely know. For me it's gonna depend on how much better the picture quality is in resolution mode compared to performance.

Reminder, this is free, Rockstar Games charged you lot $20 to give you a version of GTAV that just had a 60fps or basic one source ray traced shadows.
Even those fucks at Bethesda gave us Skyrim w/ new shaders and spell effects, etc. GTAV was basically just a 60fps patch with a mode that might have RTX in it if you look closely.

Companies haven't even fully ended cross gen releases quite yet, and people are already hoping for pro versions of the new consoles.

With supply chain woes impacting the first couple years and only finally easing now, its going to be a long time before any pro versions happen. If they even do this generation.
