Digital Foundry vs. the Rayman Legends demo

One of the most genuinely exciting playable demos released in recent times, Rayman Legends on Wii U combines beautiful artwork, animation and audio with some innovative GamePad integration - and it all runs at native 1080p with a nigh-on flawless 60 frames per second update. Exclusive to the new Nintendo console, it's an interesting example of how third parties can put the hardware through its paces without having to worry about cross-platform conformity. The GamePad features aren't optional extras but instead form an integral part of the whole proposition: it's a release that simply wouldn't be the same on any other home console.

There's a fair few points to discuss from a technical perspective too. Rayman Origins demonstrated spectacularly that 2D artwork can still look stunning, and that the reduced processing power required opens the door for running a visually arresting game at full 1080p.

The 2D visuals also proved immensely scalable, with excellent renditions of the game across a range of platforms including Wii and Vita. Notably, the game still manages to run at the full 60 frames per second even in native 2880x1800 resolution on the Retina Macbook Pro. Rayman Legends on Wii U is notable in that it retains the extreme resolution and frame-rate capabilities of the engine, but adds 3D elements to the mix.

Jeez, I thought this was available already. Was planning on getting it during the Buy 2 Get 1 free at Target on Sunday. Either way that's great news. It would be great if it stayed exclusive at least for 6 months or so.

Was the Rayman game on the 360/PS3 also 1080p?

Guh? Rayman Wii-U is 1800p?

not if it's coming to PS360 like many people on the edge of getting a Wii U think it will

will get this for Wii U though

this game can't come to PS360. a similar and maybe equally awesome game might, but it's a great example of a game that could not be done on PS360. I suppose you could attempt something on PS3/Vita if you have a Vita client running the game in synch with the PS3 version, but that'd be a massive investment of time and resources to pull off.

sections of these levels and these assets could show up on the other consoles... but it'd be Origins 2 and not Legends.

and Legends is fantastic fun.

and I see that single 'unnoticeable' framedrop at the end of castle rock every single time. damn my eyes.

I think this is not likely to happen. I have my doubts but the fact that Nintendo is publishing it in Japan it's a clear message. It still could happen tough.

Will probably get this once I've exhausted the stupId 30 times demo play limit.

OK. Darkstalkers 2, Shi'nen shooter, Mario U, Pikmin 3, Zombi U (maybe), Injustice and now Rayman. The list of "would" titles grows up.

Feel free to actually direct to some figures there. Also to contrast them to NSMB Wii Sales.

So for you the game sold spectacularly everywhere but on Wii?
I'd actually like data for that!
You're the one making that argument so you have to provide data that it didn't sell on Nintendo platforms btw.

Look, we know that Origins wasn't a very CPU heavy game because the Wii version ran at 60 fps and the Vita did too. Legends being an exclusive gives them ample room to improve things on the CPU and GPU, so it's no surprise that it's a better looking game.

I don't think they've tried to max out the graphics too much, but Legends is definitely doing 'more' in terms of effects and based on the videos, in terms of enemy numbers.

It was a great baseline to take something like Origins and expand it into an exclusive on the Wii U. Thankfully the gameplay matches the performance.

Too bad it doesn't have AA of any sort, the 3D elements stick out like a sore thumb.

When did I say anywhere except the Wii? The game sold 50,000 units on all platforms in it's first month - it was a huge sales failure, though it's my understanding it had legs. I'm not hating on Wii owners at all - I'm hating on players everywhere in general who didn't buy it.

Anyways, it was meant to indicate that the game/series is great, and I wish people would take chances on new games. I'm not sure what you're so defensive about.

While they're kind of right that it couldn't be done on other consoles (by themselves), it could be done on PS3/Vita combo so it's not completely true.

Played the demo last night, man was the demo awesome. The surround sound was the best I have heard from my Wii U so far as well. The running stage with the fire behind you had me and my wife laughing and cheering, was pretty badass.

Huh, people are mighty touchy huh. :P This is a technical thread last I saw. Thankfully there doesn't see to much polygonal stuff in the game. Looks great overall, maybe the artwork is a tad more detailed than Origins.

I played the demo last night and first I thouht it was good, just like Origins. Maybe visuals slightly improved, mostly because of art.

Then I played the castle rock stage. And oh boy, that was pure Jim Henson-tier magic in my face! Day one.

Why do you blame people for buying latest Mario over Rayman when ps3 and 360 equally ignored the game then?
Why even put Mario instead of say CoD or even Sonic since you know they're more directly in competition?
I mean you went out of your way to blame Mario for Rayman's shortcomings after all
In the current world, it will still get ignored by people solely looking for Mario retreads.
I still await the explanations of people with no Wii and ps3/360 choosing NSMBW over Rayman Origins.

Huh? Who said anything about price? I just said it was possible.

I'm talking theoretically. Ubisoft said their Wii U games could be done on PS3/Vita, and the videos I've seen of LBP 2's cross controller stuff seems like it's smooth and lag free so I'm guessing it's possible.

It's possible yes. You'd have the Vita running the game natively on it's own hardware synching wirelessly to the PS3 also running the game natively. Some concessions MAY have to be made to get the game running on the Vita at 60 fps (if they've used any of that processor overhead the Wii U processor affords them, and I think they might have based on enemy numbers in certain areas being well beyond what I remember from Origins), but it could be done.

It wouldn't really be worth it though. Sales wise you'd be much better off reusing these assets to make an Origins 2 that could be sold individually to Vita and PS3 owners, whether or not they own both systems.

I agree with DF in saying that they blend in very well, but they are obviously not 2D. They don't feel like a sore thumb at all but the jaggies and a few other things make it fairly obvious which is which.

Or they could retool the levels that force Murfy on you. Or simply cut them out and call it a day.
