DigitalFoundry: Quantum Break - An Xbox One Tech Showcase

The video also closes with a caveat about resolution, making it a major takeaway from the piece in my view.

I'm not trying to be mean about this, and I really don't think I've said anything hurtful but I felt the repeated references to resolution really stood out as they were the sole negatives in an otherwise super-positive report.
Then you misunderstood what I was trying to do. The mention of resolution is clearly something on a lot of people's mind so you can't NOT mention it. I don't think it's even that important but it has to be discussed.

Really wish we were allowed to see the PC version... game comes out in 5 days and nearly no details or videos or anything on the PC version of the game that I can find at least. I hope it isn't a completely broken mess and that's why they are hush hush about it...

Yeah, there are some spoilers (though nothing too revealing or anything - mostly location spoilers for the first half of the game). I needed to show that stuff in order to analyze it, though.

Finally, I understand how your tag relates to you.

Thanks for the analysis.

it's a technical farce imho

good analysis. In-depth without getting bogged down in all the fancy jargon and number crunching. Obviously you respect the reader enough not to waste their time explaining any of technical aspects because who doesn't know advanced graphics programming, amirite?!

dark10x, you taking notes? consider using Vine next time. 6 seconds seems like overkill but you can probably pad it with an intro.

Looks like the first actual next gen game (using technology to do meaningful stuff gameplay wise that you couldn't have before, instead of just being a better looking version of last gen gameplay).

Remedy have always been a great developer.

I hope they eventually make a win32 version of this so I can play it.
edit: I'm not a fan of the AA solution on xbox, I never minded jaggies much even on pc and this (while it cleans up the image very well for screenshots and when you stop to look at stuff) just makes for a very noisy and artifacty image in motion.
It's hard enough to get acceptable motion clarity on modern tvs and monitors as is.

edit : and that bf4 720p comparison in the video is not fair at all, as far as I know bf4 doesn't have 4x msaa on the xbox
compare it to forza horizon on the xbox 360, that also used 4x msaa

Holy shit.

Yeah, I think we should look at some other idle animations that close from other games. Things like, ryse, the order, infamous, etc.

That is really cool.
Guys, the technical farce thing is a joke from an old thread when the res broke.

I think he's referring to this

(He calls it a technical farce at the bottom)

haha

I got played :(

I said it in the review thread, that this is the best model I've seen this gen (which obviously automatically means ever) and everybody jumped at me when I insisted it's looking better than The Order's gameplay models, said I'm waiting for their proof that TO1886's gameplay models looks better. Still waiting.

They showed proof... you are just in denial.

My 2 cents from the discussion.

Hmmm, a dig at a certain other upcoming game perhaps? lol.

No, I'm referring to when this gen started and people asked where the games that actually felt next gen were.

I realised that this is the first one I have seen so far.

Last gen it was probably portal , in the ps2 era probably mgs2 or splinter cell

I think it looks better too.

The game looks incredible. I can't wait to see what it looks like on PC. I'll say, I just love Remedy's take on shooters, I've enjoyed every single one.

Best looking tech I've seen to date. Wondering how much better it will look on the PC. Clearly this will be a benchmark for graphics being compared to every other game title coming out this year.

That is the best looking gameplay model I've seen. Rivals all other games' cinematic cutscenes for sure.

I've got a feeling a non UWP version will pop up eventually. Might take a while.

I will probably update to win 10 soon and check the game out. If I hear a rumour in a few months that a non UWP version is coming then I may hold out. I want to support this type of game though, it looks worthy of my money sooner rather than later.

In this case it'd genuinly be better to buy an xbox copy to support remedy than to support UWP by buying the pc version.

A non-UWP version is not going to release anytime soon. The moment they have a win32 release of a first party developed title, is the moment they've given up on the API and storefront - which isn't going to be for quite a while.

Also, It'll be interesting to see if the game cracked/pirated moving forward.

Are you staying that because you get a PC copy as well?

Still, if I access the PC version due to not owning the console I'm supporting UWP anyway.

Yes, I did say it could take a while.

Conversely, if sales are very bad I can see the small chance Remedy can get this game out there a lot sooner. Still think it's going to take a while though. If MS can put up a lot more like a decent Forza and so on then it could be worthwhile for them to hold out. I could be onboard if they get Forza right on PC.

I felt like it was a pretty positive video. They touched on the hot topics, but didn't use it to really drag the game down.

"It's good, has a few flaws, but it is good" is my take away.

About Uncharted 4, from what I read on Beyond3D, geometry (the basis for pixel counting) does run at native 1080p. What is being speculated now is that shadows are using some form of temporal reprojection. The dithered shadows gradually become less dithered and better looking with each consecutive frame. It's something along those lines at least, unless I'm mistaken.

As for Quantum Break, aside from the 720p resolution and really low res shadows, I think the game looks great overall. I do hope more games will use a real time GI solution. Great video as usual, dark!

That video really reminded me why I prefer NX Gamers output to DF. Maybe its just me, but I find NX's enthusiasm for technique much more appealing than DF's obsession with metrics. Things like resolution, be it for individual effects or for the screen as a whole is technologically insignificant, as it just speaks to a need to optimize bandwidth for limited hardware rather than a lack of prowess in execution.

I don't think that's a fair criticism of the video. Frankly I'm not sure if we watched the same thing.

The game looks fantastic. This video really makes me want to play it on pc. I have a feeling it's not gonna run so well on my 780 though

I think it looks great. Resolution seems to be the only thing that matters to a lot of people when it comes to image quality this gen, but thankfully it doesn't bother me as much.

The video was really good. This is an incredible looking game, with a lot of technology behind it. That gameplay model just looks awesome. Hell, the music from the game in the background sounded awesome. Can't wait to play this on PC.

Hey, Dictator, I don't suppose you'll be doing a break down of the global illumination technique in this game in the visual fidelity thread? :P

I haven't been following this game that much although I do intend to buy it. But god damn this game looks good. Can't wait to play it on PC.

Although not a popular title, I feel Until Dawn compares very favourably in this regard, though it sort of has to as it has those pause, choose an option states that can sometimes get real close.

Ugh, second and fourth GIF's fall into the uncanny valley for me there. Anyway, here are some The Order gameplay shots from Beyond3D:

Compares quite favorably to the QB GIF if you ask me.

I agree. The Order and Quantum Break both feature some of the best in-game character models I've ever seen.

I think what makes QB stand out is the fact that it uses a well known actor which helps it feel even more impressive in a way, but both titles do an amazing job.

I still think The Order looks better overall, but it's also far more static and never attempts anything on the scale of QB. Now I kinda want to go back and replay The Order. For some reason, I really enjoyed it.

I also agree that Until Dawn just looks kinda strange in comparison. The skin just doesn't look quite right. Plus, the game itself feels as if it's going to break apart at any moment thanks to the terribly unstable performance.

Heh, this is actually almost exactly my opinion on all this as well. I agree The Order looks better overall, but I find QB to be more technically impressive, considering it is doing real time GI. I haven't played Until Dawn, so I won't comment much on it, but two of those GIF's definitely fall into the uncanny valley for me. Anyway, I can't wait to get a close up shot of the character models in Uncharted 4. I'm pretty sure it will be up there with TO and QB.
