Move over Rapunzel. The honor of being named the newest Disney Princess will soon go to Merida from Disney/Pixar’s Academy Award-winning film “Brave.”

Merida will officially become Disney’s 11th princess in a royal coronation, set to take place at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom theme park on Saturday, May 11, 2013. The ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m.

All Magic Kingdom guests are invited to watch the Disney Princess coronation of Merida on May 11, 2013 at Cinderella Castle, but should be aware that Disney’s own cameras will be recording the event and will likely be blocking off a large area directly in front of the castle.

The “Brave” princess is the first to join the line-up from the world of Pixar, though she is getting an artistic makeover to match the new Disney Princess look seen on a broad array of merchandise, as seen here, moving away from the 3D computer-generated look from her film.

She will be joining existing Disney Princesses Snow White, Mulan, Aurora, Belle, Tiana, Ariel, Cinderella, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Rapunzel in the line, all of whom are likely to make an appearance at the coronation. New hairstyles, makeup, and dresses were recently given to the princesses in a modern update to their looks, which are also now reflected at Disney’s theme parks. But from this new artwork, it doesn’t seem that Disney will be changing Merida’s wild signature hairdo.

The most recent previous addition to the Disney Princess group was Rapunzel from “Tangled,” whose 2011 coronation took place in the regal setting of Kensington Palace in London, England.

I find it pretty ironic (and amusing) that Disney are sucking Merida into their princess vortex when it seems like that's a little at odds with Merida as a character.

Here's the "artistic makeover" for Merida:

The look they're matching her to:

There's obviously no shortage of loathing for Brave (and Pixar in general these days) around here, but of all my problems with Brave, Merida wasn't one of them. So I have no problem with this.

The hell is wrong with her left arm?
If you are talking about Merida there is nothing wrong with her left arm. She just has it behind her back and holding her bow. Maybe her dress makes it look weird with the decoration. I'm not too familiar with fashion so I don't know the name of the elbow fluff on her dress.

Guess who's not princess-material? That's right Jane, it's you... serves you right for romancing a jungle man.

Quite a few Disney fans are rather upset over mixing WDAS and Pixar like this. I really can't give a shit though, the Disney Princess franchise is a load of tripe. Recent redesigns shown in the OP are also awful, many look nothing like the characters from the films themselves.

Try and make the same exact movement.

It continues to baffle me as to why the fuck Mulan is one of the princesses.

Because the film and character are popular and more importantly, they want some racial diversity in the franchise.

The thing is her actual character would hate being a Disney Princess

I honestly think the franchise does a disservice to all the characters. Makes them seem so shallow, what with all the dresses and excessive frills and glitter. The characters, at least post-Aurora have more character than that.

Other than selling toys to young girls, what's the point of this?

4 billion a year is good enough reason.

Love it. Brave was a great movie and if my future daughter wants to be the ass-kicking, independent princess, I'd consider that a small success.

It's what, her, Mulan and...uh. None of them that I'd want my daughter to emulate at that age. Maybe Belle? Except the falling for the abusive boyfriend and all.

I'm probably thinking about this too deep.
