IGN review : 8.9

The sharper visuals, smooth 60-fps gameplay, and other features and enhancements gave me plenty of reasons to be happy about coming back, and to recommend that you pick it up for the first time.

Gameinformer: 9.0

Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition is a rare case where the developer goes back and fixes those things, big and small. Whether you’re a newcomer or a devoted fan, this is a remaster done right.

With more than enough content to justify its $40 price tag, DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition represents the best version of one of the more underrated titles from the previous generation.

Capcom knows that current consoles lack a good action game. Packed with extras based on difficulty and frenzy, this definitive edition lacks in terms of technical novelties.

DmC is a beautiful, bold, and supremely enjoyable videogame in its own right. It deserves to be praised...That’s what I said back then, and I’m sticking with it.

DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition is a nice remaster of an already fun and entertaining game. Ninja Theory has done a great job adding new challenges, modes and difficulty levels, creating a nice package for the true hardcore gamers.

So here we are, two years on, and console owners can finally get a taste of that sweet 60fps action, courtesy of the Definitive Edition--and it's a fantastic thing. DmC is fiercely creative, and with its new features in tow, so much better than before.

I imagine there are still some people out there put off by the direction that Ninja Theory took with DmC who still haven't given the game a shot because it so drastically changed the look of the series. This does the game a huge disservice. DmC in its Definitive Edition form isn't just a lick of paint and a technical upgrade. It's a hardcore twist on already impressive game, making the hack 'n' slash action more difficult, but also more compelling than before. The numerous tweaks and upgrades of DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition have made a game that isn't just a better version of DmC, but a bonafide hack 'n' slash classic.

I'll update as I go. I Apologize for not going through each review and selecting choice quotes for all reviews linked.

I'll make this simple : If you never got this, and you're a Devil May Cry fan, skipping that DE version is a foolish move. (and they have a DMC 1 dante skin and DMC 3 vergil skin, with bloody palace for both characters now)

Sure you might dislike the 80% of the story from Dante's POV, but pretty sure the gameplay and art direction will keep you hooked. And there is VERY little chance you will dislike Vergil's part and gameplay.

While not equaling the best DMCs, this is definitely one of the strongest action game released in recent years. Turbo and Hardcode modes make Dante Must Die quite fun.

Support it. And buy DMC 4 SE too this summer.

Glad to see the reviews do it justice, they really worked hard to fix the game.

Sounds good. I never played it on PS3 (despite getting it free on PS+), so I'll put it on the £15 wishlist for this gen. I enjoyed Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and I'm looking forward to Hellblade, so despite much of Gaf hating them I do consider myself a fan of Ninja Theory.

So, this is basically the pc version minus the new modes?

I don't have the game yet - I'm waiting for the PSN store to update. And I actually saw a few videos on youtube and there is a lot of game changes. Whether hardcore mode is turned on or off, but enemy locations, item locations, enemy and boss attack patterns, damage output / input, frame data, and many other gameplay tweaks are peppered throughout the entire game.

Greg from CapcomUnity mentioned that the change log is over 6 pages long regarding game alterations. In addition to the new modes.

The technical performance of the game is based off of the PC version, 1080p / 60 fps. But everything else is new entirely and based off of popular PC mods.

They even went in and changed the sound effects of some of Dante's firearms. Which tells me they really went over the entire game looking for things to improve. We really need that change log. Greg said he's make it public. Hopefully tomorrow.

Still have this untouched on PC, are there any features in this version that aren't available in the PC version?

Any word on this being patched in the pc version?

Everything new in regards to the Definitive Edition is not in the PC version other than 1080p and 60 fps. And sadly it doesn't look like the new modes and gameplay / balance changes will be patched in.

EDIT: There are some mods out there for the PC version that do add in some of the new features seen in the Definitive Edition.

Definitely not a patch. If this were to make it to PC, it'd be another package, or at the least they'd piecemeal it out as DLC somehow.

Aw dang that sucks, thanks for the info!

There's a shit load of balancing changes.

Ah, thank you both. Love this game, so I might actually triple dip on this.

It's not the look but the gameplay and the ikaruga-style enemies are still in. So no. Maybe, I buy DMC 4 SE, if the changes are huge. If not I stay with Bayonetta.

I wasn't even going to post here, but some of you guys are still arguing people didn't like it because of dante's look, which is a joke.

No way it was not gonna get good reviews. The vanilla version was well received and this version is definitive all right. Can't wait to play it later on.

You can deal damage with any weapon now. Something I'm happy for as I wasn't a fan being locked into a weapon to take them down. The advantage for hitting the right colour is the enemy stun, hitting with the other weapons deals damage but doesn't interrupt their attack.

Looks like PS4 is still lacking AF while Xbox One does, according to Eurogamer.net.

Texture detail can look rather blurred on PS4, something that certainly isn't a problem on the PC game - and remarkably, even the last-gen versions of DmC resolve more texture detail at a distance. We're still working on our analysis of the Xbox One version of the Definitive Edition, but just a quick look at the game on the Microsoft console reveals a decent level of anisotropic filtering in place, producing a cleaner, more detailed looking game than its PS4 counterpart.

Not sure I understand this?

There's no other version of the game with these new features and dlc and skins, this is the version you should play if you haven't already

The writer sees some of the changes made to the game as being for the worse.

This shit is starting to get annoying. Hopefully this is one of the last times this happens.

May be some of the 3rd party engines are not made to make proper use of PS4 hardware yet instead they might be using DX based engines (as base then porting game to PS4) so they have PC and XB1 have that AF working properly but left PS4.

Our review is also online - 8/10. Brilliant port with lots of content and options.

Push Square's DmC: Devil May Cry - Definitive Edition PS4 Review

DmC: Devil May Cry - Definitive Edition is one of the more thoughtful remasters on the PS4, and its emphasis on modifiers means that you can more or less tailor the experience to your tastes. We're still not sure whether old-school Devil May Cry fans will allow themselves to enjoy Ninja Theory's take on the series, but many of the tweaks have been designed with those outspoken individuals in mind. For everyone else, the Cambridge-based company's confident take on Capcom's character action classic is well worth playing – and even if its previous generation hallmarks are still present, its upscaled visuals and boosted framerate make this particular edition heaven sent.

I'm very glad that reviews are positive. I highly enjoyed the game when I played it first [on PC], and hopefully more will get to experience it in the coming years [hopefully enough for Capcom to start thinking about sequel].

My gripe with the original was the awful bosses. Apart from the very last boss which was shoe horned in; they all felt like garbage qte with repeating patterns.
