DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition Review Thread

I've never played a Devil May Cry game, but I just watched the Gamespot review. This game looks badass.

Do I need to play the other ones before diving into this iteration?

Nope, it's an alternate take on the origin story ala amazing spiderman. Obviously still worth playing though, regardless of order.

I think this game got a lot more flak than it deserved when it first came out, although being a Devil May Cry fan, I did agree with a lot of the initial criticism.

That being said, it was a solid character action game, improved with the PC version, and improved again with this latest edition. I really urge people to at least give it a fair chance, as there's a lot of fun to be had with it.

loved the original on PC. rock solid port. gonna pick it up for PS4 when it's on sale.

absolutely beautiful game.

I'll make this simple : If you never got this, and you're a Devil May Cry fan, skipping that DE version is a foolish move. (and they have a DMC 1 dante skin and DMC 3 vergil skin, with bloody palace for both characters now)

Sure you might dislike the 80% of the story from Dante's POV, but pretty sure the gameplay and art direction will keep you hooked. And there is VERY little chance you will dislike Vergil's part and gameplay.

While not equaling the best DMCs, this is definitely one of the strongest action game released in recent years. Turbo and Hardcode modes make Dante Must Die quite fun.

Support it. And buy DMC 4 SE too this summer.

Glad to see the reviews do it justice, they really worked hard to fix the game.
played it free for PS+ and second this. Won't pay full price for it, but it's worth a playthrough with all the changes and upgrades now.

They really butchered the story though and I don't care for the new art direction at all. DMC4:SE I'm getting day one though, this will get on sale. It will fall right behind DMC4 now in terms of best action titles.

DMC1 (because it's my first/gothic themes RE vibe) DMC3, DMC4, DMC:DE.

That's really odd, and borderline doesn't even make any sense. I'll be getting the game once the psn store updates and see what's going on.

Let me know. I'm confused about this too. Apparently, the guy bought a retail copy. Another commenter on Eurogamer said the same thing and he also bought a retail copy :-/

Not going to buy this version because I already beat the PC version last year and I don't consider myself an hardcore enough fan to get the upgraded version for mostly balance changes. I have next to no interest in secondary modes like Bloody Place.

But all I can say is that I really enjoyed the vanilla version and that all DMC fans should give the game a chance.

What's the difference between this and the PC version?

  • All previously released DLC including Vergil's Downfall plus brand new modes and content.
  • Play as Vergil in the Bloody Palace mode
  • The combat system and enemies have been rebalanced, gameplay optimizations and manual lock on.
  • New game modes. Hardcore Mode Must Style Mode and Gods Must Die Mode
If they kept Dantes voice and the color coded enemies, I don't think this is worth another 50 (or 60?) dollars

It's only $40.

I have the retail version on PS4 and there is no update available.
Thanks, that gives my poor internet some hope. Out of curiosity, where are you based? I ask because both guys who complained about the patch were UK based so although it doesn't make sense, I wonder if it has something to do with the region?

It was always a solid action game, it seems that the gameplay improvements and the 60fps are to the liking of many, which is notable.
