Do Final Fantasy Fans Really Want More Lightning?

Do Final Fantasy fans want more Lightning?

Results are only viewable after voting.
I liked her in 13. In 13-2, I already thought she overstayed her welcome. If LR:FF13 is a good game I won't mind so much but I don't really want to see her in other games.

I imagine Tidus is more disliked.

It's hard to gauge from this poll, since Lightning has been shoved down our thoughts, and the question is actually whether we want more of her (not whether we liked her in the first place).

Disliked yes but more? Not sure about that. Then again I was like 12 when FFX came out so I wasn't really around for the reaction at the time. Now a days I feel like people make fun of Tidus (laughing meme) but don't actively dislike him or what he stands for as much.

Don't involve Nomura in Toriyama's twisted fantasy. If anything Lightning has been a detriment to his work as the XIII games have actively been a roadblock to XV. As you'll notice in many of his interviews he rarely talks about Lightning. He always talks about Sora, Cloud and Squall.

Yeahhhhh you're right that wasn't fair. Edited him out.

She's very popular among japanese FF fans.
And Japanese developers aren't really aware of the rest of the world.
So...

Posters on this board from Japan and even people here who frequent the Japanese boards tell a very different story. But it's nice to know that Toriyama has repeated the same thing over and over again and some people are thinking it's true.

I'm surprised 40% on a Kotaku poll are either yes or don't care. And that's not France, Korea, Japan, or China where it would probably be much higher.

Personally, I'm all for cameos of any FF characters. They're just fun little bonuses. I liked Cloud in Tactics, Vaan and Penelo in Tactics Advance 2, Kingdom Hearts, Lightning in XIV, and all the other XIV fan service from throughout the series. Yuna, Cloud, Aerith, Setzer, Locke, and Siegfried costumes in LR were neat too. If they have some other Lightning cameos in mind, I'm all for it.

Alright, you got me there.

At he same time it completely slipped by mind that he was the main character in that game. Vaan wasn't great but he was...forgettable and not nearly as in your face as Lightning has been. If you didn't like him it was pretty easy to brush him aside, where as Lightning is basically Toriyama and Nomura's waifu at this point.

Also, FF12 at least had other pretty great characters in your party to make up for Vaan, which can't really be said for 13.

Nomura doesn't care that much about Lightning. He was even surprised by her name because he thought the FFXIII team would stop with the weather-based name patterns already.

Personally, hell no.
I don't even get the appeal.

I think they really want a main female character they can market behind and usually they get 1 shot in a single game and then it's over and they need a new female character. I guess I can understand why they would want her back but Lightning is just so flat and uninteresting to me.

Really? What prevents people from those countries from voting in the poll? It's the World Wide Web!

From what I've seen, western FF fans are either ambivalent or don't want any more Lightning. Unfortunately, Square-Enix doesn't give three refried fucks about the opinions of overseas FF fans. They're more interested in pleasing the home audience and shoving a character down our throat.

The Square-Enix equivalent of Poochy.

I don't have a problem as I like the character. I don't want her starring n anything other than the XIII series though. Cameos are fine.

I sure as shit don't. I used to love Final Fantasy, but find XIII and XIII-2 abhorrent. It's not so much that I hate Lightning as a character, but she represents XIII to me, and I'd really prefer to never be reminded of XIII's existence again.

I like her in 13/13-3 just fine. In 13-2, I feel like either a lot more or a lot less(what I'm leaning toward) fleshing out her story was necessary. In other games besides KH/Dissidia? HELL NO. FF Characters should stay contained as they are in their own universes.

Well, the site isn't in Korean, French, Mandarin, or Japanese. But okay.

1) Google translate. Many people use it. I use it on Japanese sites.
2) Kotaku is an international publication. They have a Japanese site too.
3) I know that most French, Korean and Japanese speaking people can speak English. A lot of them are actually pretty fluent. Yeah they prefer to speak their own language but it doesn't mean they can't read English and vote in a poll.

lol, I know. I do not hate her, I do not like her. I just shrug my shoulders at the whole thing.
That's how I feel about her in FF XIII. However, the crazy tales spun around her for the two sequels are actually harmful to what could have been passable JRPG stories. The baggage her character has accumulated is beyond reconciliation.

4. Shinta is obviously trying to spin the results.

I enjoyed all 3 XIII games and don't want any more of her. She's overstayed her welcome for sure. Never struck me as that much of an iconic character outside of her classy design.

Believe what you want. I have no intention of even attempting to change your mind about anything, ever.

She looks like Cloud.
She has no thighs.

How does she look like cloud (without the cloud costume of course)?

I feel like they did the same thing with X-2 and they really wanted to market more with Yuna. I would actually take Lighting over Yuna though, Yuna might be me least favorite FF character ever.

I can't help but feel that cameos from Lightning would actually be rather welcome had she not been hogging the FF spotlight for the last seven consecutive years. I remember a time when character cameos from a mainline FF were a BIG deal, because the expectation was that we wouldn't see these folks again since Square didn't do direct sequels.

She looks NOTHING like Cloud in VII, Crisis Core, or Dissidia. Her CG model does share structural similarities to his CG model, but that can be said for many of Square's CG models. You could almost do the Lightning morphing in to Cloud graphic with CG Vincent, or Noel, or take your pick.

Dodos hate her.

Sorry, did foreign countries all suddenly lose internet access or something? You've lost me.

Edit: Ohhhh, it was just a poor attempt at spin. Carry on.

I really hope she doesn't appear in FFXV or any mainline FF. There's way too much fan service in this franchise already.

"Return of the Jedi" syndrome. Disliked back then... but now appreciated because at least it's an element from the old guard before it went downhill (plus nostalgia goggles).

I guess it depends by what they mean by guest character. The way they did it in FFXIV was terrible, but I don't care if they have an unexplained short cameo here or there. This applies to every (named?) Final Fantasy character.

Thank god. Try not responding to any of my posts for a month. Do us both a favor.

Hard to ignore someone who want to shill their favorite character into a game I actively like and don't want said character to be in said future games. This is a message board where anyone can voice their positive and descending opinions. If you don't like it then there's the door. Don't let it hit you on the way out.

only America has internet access, didn't you hear /s

The top 4 sources of traffic for their site are 1) US, 2) UK, 3) Canada, and 4) Australia.

Not everyone in the world looks at Kotaku for game news in equal numbers. This point is obvious.

Well that didn't last long. I knew you couldn't make it.
