do non-asian people just pretend to love sushi?

Well, it's high in fat but how can anyone hate fried foods? Wait, don't answer because my friend is actually one of those people.

Actually, they do. It's called Makizushi (sushi roll). The ones that are shaped like blocks (of rice) with toppings are called Nigiri sushi. There are also the type of sushi where it's basically just rice with raw seafoods. It's called Chirashi sushi.

Fuck the noise. Sashimi 4 Lyfe

I highly recommend Sushi-ya, which is in Chatswood, and there is another one in Artarmon (but it isn't as good).
In the city, Minato is my favourite, but always very busy. Across the road from that is Yasae which is good and very decently priced. If you want higher end, there is Yama on the top floor of the QVB. It's more expensive but the food is delicious.

EDIT: Makoto and Sakae not Minato and Yasae.

Thanks, man (and Replicant). I only have 2 more weeks in Sydney before i am being sent to Dubbo for 9 months, but i'll definitely check a couple of these places out in the meantime, and when i get back.

For the convenience of Sydney-GAF, here is a summary of the recommendations:

Zushi (Crown St in Surry Hills)
Sushi-ya (Chatswood)
Yama (top of QVB)
Makoto and Sakae in the city (Makoto outside world square > Sakae directly across)
Below Kinokuniya (all sushi $3)
Miso (inside world square; for bento boxes mainly, but good sushi)
Isakura (Ashfield; 1/2 price from 2-3pm)

Next weeks thread: why are those damn Asians eating all our cheeseburgers?

Along with: do non-italian people just pretend to enjoy carpaccio?

And don't forget: do non-vegetarian people just pretend to enjoy flesh?

etc.

This thread title is like a gift from the forum god. I mean a debilitated, brain-dead, slobbering and naked forum god. Sloshing in poo.

I'm a white guy, I like sushi a fair bit, I also like anime but I do have this to say about food in general.

WHY THE HELL DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME ABOUT KOREAN FOOD?

i could eat bowlfuls of yukgaejang. BOWLFULS.

I was introduced to Korean for the first time when I moved to my current neighborhood, there's this wonderful Korean family grocery store / restaurant like a mile away. I don't even know the name of what I eat, but good gracious it's great. Every dish I've had.

I grew up never having gone to a sushi place. My first experience wasn't that great but I gave it another try as I noticed my friends really liked. That's when I had pieces of fresh, melt in your mouth salmon, yellowtail belly, etc. Now... you can't keep me away from the stuff.

Still cannot do wasabi though. Kills every flavor in my mouth and makes my gag reflex kick in. And yes, real wasabi as well - I have sought it out in an effort to see if I just hated the horseradish crap.

I enjoy anime and all that, but anything that comes from the sea is gross. I'll eat it if I have to, but I do not like it.

All of you SydGaffers get in AusGAF. If we ever do another meetup it'll be fun and stuff.

Tell me of this place below Kinokuniya - it's not Wagimama is it? Or the sushi shop on the way to Town Hall?

I'm a 4-5 times a week sushi guy for a few years now... but now I remember that I actually didn't have real sushi (as in, beyond california rolls) until I was 23 :P

So basically, there's hope for you pathetic non-sushi eaters yet!

Nope. It's a new place, where the Japan City used to be. I looked up it's name, it's called Sushi Hotaru.

Wagamama is okay, but it's not okay for those goddamn prices. Way too expensive.

Wasabi is amazing.

"Hey, maybe I'm immune to wasabi now!" "Wait, no, I guess I'm not." "ARRGH MY NOSE"

I hate wasabi, and not because it's spicy. The taste is so off-putting, it makes me wanna puke. I hate it when some sushi places put a little bit in the sashimi nigiri. Not sure if that's more traditional japanese style, but I hate it anyway.

this reminds me of the 'people only use chopsticks to be pretentious' thread

reminds me of

Why is that even animated?

lol

Sushi tastes great. Has nothing to do with the japanese fanaticism.

People in DC really love Sushi. I will admit that it does tend to be eaten this area a lot more than surrounding areas. Most people don't know what good sushi is though.

Mind unblown.

I'm not a sushi nut, but I'll enjoy some once a month, give or take. I do love me a sushi train though.

(edit) Usual disclaimer, my avatar is purely gaming related.

I love how he says non asian like somehow all asian people know the real taste of sushi and us filthy non asians bought into a lie. Read Kitchen Confidential where Anthony Bourdain describes a meal he had in Japan. I guess we should all only like our own immediate background food right? I will be sure to remember the user name and use this thread.

I'd be interested to know what Bourdain said.

Probably been established before but cmon now the non asian people that you are talking about probably don't know the name of any anime or manga other than dragon ball z and naruto.

I'm non-asain, and have a fair hand in anime, manga, vn's, and japanese music; but I don't particularly like sushi. It isn't gag-inducing like I thought it might be as it's quite tolerable, but I don't like it if you understand what I mean.

But anyway, I just came for the hipster ariel pic, and I'm leaving satisfied.

I've eaten sushi in a small sushi place in Vienna and totally hated it, yuck. It was few years ago. Since then I didn't touch any, but this summer during a party in the Japanese embassy I've decided to give it a go one last time and loved it. Guess it depends on how they make it/the fish it's made from.

Oh man, it's all so very good. Koreans been holding out acting like all they've got is Kimchi

Don't have the passage on me the moment but he goes to Japan for work and he is taken to a place by this chef he knows. They go to this small place and the chef at the restaurant pretty much just starts giving them fresh fish and they spend the whole night just eating fish straight and drinking. He says later it was one of the best meals of his life. I guess Anthony Bourdain is just trying to show how cultured he is by liking sushi.

In the Tokyo episode of No Reservations, he went to the restaurant of considered the world's best sushi chef and said it was one of the best meals he ever had. It looked like awesome, awesome nigiri and not the typical sushi roll we usually see in the west.
