why is this the cliche? I have never seen a Russian wearing a tracksuit in real life.

Not just Russians. Remember that over there, "American" style was the shit. Blue jeans, Nike, Adidas, were fucking gold over there. Now that capitalism has been welcomed, fashions have updated, but some sports and leisure clothing are still very much appreciated by the "bad boy" or "big baller" look.
