an equivalent for Macs is GlimmerBlocker, which is freeware.

I love adblock plus disclaimer: it is turned off on gaf. So many internet ads are crap, poorly targeted and slow. I turn it completely off every few months to see if it has changed and give it a good amount of time to track me, but its the same rubbish.

For sites it really depends on whether the ad's are Pay Per Click or Pay Per View. I believe most these days are PPC and since I wouldn't click on them anyway then they aren't losing out.

Adverts generally have a 40kb limit, but thats just a pre load limit, ie the advert when first loaded has to be <40kb. All you have to do in that 40kb is tell it to look for the real advert which can be as big as you want, slowing my browsing down. Sites that mess up with adblock force me to whitelist them, if they are worth the inconvenience. But if sites like Gaf ask me not to use it I generally comply so long as the adverts don't play massive videos or make sounds.

I figure that if your ads are intrusive enough, I'll do one better by not visiting. Aside from that, I'm okay with unobtrusive ads that don't get in the way of reading or viewing why I'm there to begin with.

I don't use adblock except one site that I got not one but 2 of those stupid Win7 Antivirus malware things within a few days of each other. So for that one site that caused it, I view it via its own browser that I rarely use for any other site on the internet, and have adblock on. If that one site had better policed its ads, I never would have thought about suppressing any ads ever.

Overall, I don't care about ads, I pay them scarce attention, it's just the ones with sound (or malware) that annoy the heck out of me. Fortunately, I don't view all that many sites, all things considered.

I mean, back in the day ads even on reputable sites were really bad. Poorly designed, poorly implemented. Full of scams and malware. It really was much worse than ads on most reputable sites today.

But most reputable sites have realized that ads shouldn't be crazy intrusive. It's a small price to pay for the content one can access.

But I'm not paying for the service. The advertisers are. And the websites are selling ME to the advertisers. Most of the time, it's just my time and attention (which I don't consider free), but often they are selling information about me or providing a service by which trackers can follow me and keep track of what websites I visit. No they haven't. Do you have proof? There have been multiple people who have show screenshots without ads on neogaf and none of them were banned. Please give examples.

I have adblock enabled by default, and then whitelist neogaf and team spooky on twitch and other stuff I go to on a regular basis.

The only time I blocked anything on GAF was that time there was that weird flash ad for some crappy flash based FPS that screwed up your cursor all over the page. When it got fixed I whitelisted GAF again.

You can add exceptions to it. Also, Adblock now allows a little bit of ads that they know won't popup or block access to anything else of play music or flat out annoy the shit outta you. GAF ads are awesome and at times useful.

I don't care about ads like on NeoGAF or Google since I don't even notice them; they exist in a blind, naturally ad-blocked spot of my vision. I don't even know how you guys notice the humorous ones: why are you looking at ads? Then again, I'm a person who doesn't notice ad placement in movies, either, while I know many here are annoyed by it.

What is annoying is online video advertising, like on The Daily Show and NBC's Olympics coverage. The weird thing is that everyone hates these commercials: they're repetitive, annoying, grating, and largely unwanted. They put me off from the products. And I can't be the only one who feels that way. Why would companies want to annoy people? The short answer must be that it works, and I'd be curious to see how they collect data to determine this.

I don't mind unobtrusive ads - normal banners put somewhere in the header, footer or in the sidebar, or embedded into the content itself. Even Youtube ads don't bother me. However, annoying ads, those that disturb consuming the content, can go to hell. I really have no idea how can anyone think that a huge flash ad, that covers the entire screen, screams at me (sometimes literally), and/or makes me play "where's waldo" with a close button can encourage anyone to buy a product/service it advertises. I don't feel guilty about blocking those.

I'm sure that if ads creators would start to think about usability, people wouldn't block ads so much.

This is what I was thinking. Sure, they're annoying on some sites like Youtube where I just want teh banner ad to go away faster, but they're really not impeding my ability to enjoy the content, so I don't see a reason to use AdBlock.

I wonder about this, too. I'd think that Google of all people would be anti-ad blocking. Google removes applications like Market Enabler from Android (which switches your Android market to a different region), yet they don't remove ad blockers from the Android store or Chrome store.

To be fair, when Chrome was in its infancy, the way the plugin system used to work did not allow ad block plugins to be possible. Some used to complain that there was no ad blocker on Chrome.

Many people don't/didn't want to switch from FF to Chrome because adblock plugins (Adblock/NoScript) work better on the first one. If Chrome blocked all ad block plugins, lots of folks would switch the browser back to Firefox.
