Do you also forget a lot about a game you have beaten?

For example when thinking about it 2 months later after having beaten it. I remember the important key parts of the game, but for the rest I forget almost everything about the game.

Like I was having a discussion with someone on metroid prime 3, skyward sword and super paper mario, and I know I have beaten them, but I couldnt remember a thing about them...

Or is it just me?

I usually remember everything down to the very last detail. Important power-up locations, boss patterns, stage layouts, whatever.

Not 2 months... A couple of years seems to be the case for me. An example would be Heavy Rain. I played it on release days and 2 years later I still remember every single part of it (not in the order it happened tho)

Depends on the game and how long ago I played it. For example, I played Shadow of the Colossus one time when it came out. I remember every single encounter in detail and it's the reason I haven't played it since, I'd love it if I could forget them.

i'm thinking it has to do with how much fun you were having when you were playing. for example, i'm playing dead space right now, & i'm not even remembering what my current mission is most of the time :( ...

I usually forget some stuff, but when I consider replaying the game I don't because I feel like I already know everything that'll happen so since there aren't any surprises I don't see the point of trudging through it again, especially the beginning of games when you still have shitty equipment and etc.

Depends on the game. Some of them just aren't memorable, for whatever intangible reason. Even some good games. I can remember details of some mediocre games from 20 years ago.

I forget parts, which makes replays frustrating. Like in Arkham City, there were areas I knew I went through before but I couldn't figure out how. Turns out it was just I didn't get a certain ability yet.

I never remember the story of 90% of the games I play, yet the story is one of the biggest factors in a game for me.

It's odd. Whenever a sequel comes out I have to wiki the ending to the last game usually.

Only if it's a good game/a game that made an impression.

Heavenly Sword, MGS, Uncharted, Heavy Rain and inFamous of the top of my head. Pretty story heavy games.

Same for me.

Games just aren't that memorable to me.
I can remember liking some a lot when I did play them. But remember little of what I did, just bits and pieces here and there.

it isn't just you. i'm like that too, sometimes to the extreme. i think my memory is just basically crap.

for example i've beaten MGS1-4.. and right now i can't remember anything about the story in any of them. i don't remember any other characters besides Snake and Raiden except Otacon and Campbell (only because i was reminded of the latter recently in another thread).

and just a few days ago i beat Deus Ex: HR, and i've already forgotten most of it. if someone asked me to explain what happened in the game, i would probably get it all wrong. and i only remember 2-3 of the characters. Jensen, Hugh Darrow and... umm that's about it.

also it takes AGES for me to memorize multiplayer maps. i'm playing BF3 now and it's a struggle trying to memorize the layouts. i just go the wrong way constantly.

and no i don't smoke pot. i have no idea why my memory is so shitty :( it probably also has something to do with how i messed up my university studies.. (thrice)

For RPGs, generally speaking, yes. After beating them one time I usually only remember the main plot and all of the main characters for half a year, maybe the whole year.

As time goes by however, I tend to forget the plot and some loopholes appear. Happened to me just recently with Tales of Eternia: As I kept progressing on my 2nd playthrough (11 years later) the game slowly started to feel like a deja-vu. At the beginning I only recalled the main characters but had totally forgotten about the main plot.

From experience, 2 playthroughs are enough for me to keep all the story and main elements intact.

For action adventure games I have great memory though.

If I cared enough about the game to finish it, I probably paid enough attention to remember most of the important stuff.

Not everything, though. Like, in Arkham City:
The T-Rex scared the piss out of me just as much the second time around.

I remember key points and if replaying it I'll have a sudden burst of memory remembering what happens in the next ten minutes or whatever.

If I have to think about the map layout of a dungeon in a Zelda game, I wouldn't know any details from it - I wouldn't know where the items are or which room connects to another room. However, if I play the game again, I breeze through the dungeon and remember everything. But even then it happens that I'm stuck at a certain spot.
There's only one thing that is mostly new again to me when I replay the game, and that's the story.

I think it depends on when and how you play it. Like right now, I'm blasting through my backlog and I'll barely remember any of the games I'm playing right now. But if I'm playing game that I can fully give my attention to without worrying on finishing quickly, then they tend to be very memorable.

Story-wise, definitely. Most of them go in one ear and out the other because video game stories are so bloody awful. Though there was a case where I had forgotten everything about a game, but this was ten years later - when I started to replay Arc The lad (1). None of that game looked familiar at all.

Not much. Probably a few years later and some puzzles or bosses that end more difficult and me wondering "How I beat the game already and cant beat that again"; but that aside I tend to remember most things....at least for a few years (obviously depending on the game). :p

I tend to mix up games in my head. The five God of War games have become one in my head gameplay-wise for instance.

I replayed a case in Apollo Justice last week just to read the dialogue again. There are always cool moments in text adventure games that slip my mind and are just as cool to re-experience.

This is just another random example, but I find myself checking the maps in Metroid games very frequently even with prior knowledge of the areas. It happens. : P

Depends on the game. With most generic JRPGs, if I stop playing them for more than a few months when I start back up I usually just start from the beginning because most of the story is completely lost on me. But if the game is really good, captivating me at practically every moment, then I will remember just about every detail of its world and story. Mass Effect 1 for instance -- I have not touched that game in well over a year, but I even remember complete dialogue sequences.

For this reason I think most longer games should have a "recap" menu, where it gives you a "previously on [this_game]" sequence to help fill in all the gaps.

Can't relate to this one, never happened to me.

Also for each game I complete I write it down so it helps to not forget that I beat it.

Not all the time, but it happens to me pretty often, in any form of media.

In a way, I'm sort of thankful for it. I can wait a few months between playthroughs of the Ace Attorney series and experience them almost as if it's my first time playing each time. I'll remember who the killers are and a few other key points, but I won't remember a lot of what goes on in between.

It depends on how big of an impact a game has on me. A lot of the time I'm the same as you (especially with rentals I don't plan to play again), although if I really love or hate a game I remember a lot more. It often takes a 2nd playthrough to really cement significant information including lesser plot details.

Happens me a lot. It's really annoying too because I like discussing a game I've beaten with friends who have also beaten it, but I frequently have to try and remember things from the game they're telling me about. It even happens for some of my favourite games, which is especially frustrating because I know I really loved the game, my memory just fails me. I usually have to play a game through another one or two times for stuff to really stick.

If I've beaten a game from several months ago, yeah. It's mostly me forgetting character names and locations, so when a situation comes up where I'm discussing said game, I have to look up the details I've forgotten from a website before I can resume talking about it.

I can remember old games pretty well. Like Mario platformers or whatever. But yeah, it's difficult to remember a lot of things about games, it's normal with anything you only play through once or twice after a few years.

Yep, especially story heavy games. Which is why I enjoy replaying games like Final Fantasy VIII (although this one is getting closed to being burned in my mind) and Phoenix Wright

Gotta get me some amnesia shots in the future so I can enjoy these games like brand new

Usually happen to me for RPGs. Legend of Dragoon for PS1 for example, can't remember a thing about it other than the combat system.

Depends on how much there was to learn in the first place. If I have to learn something about a game I'll probably remember it.

Like I remember most of the treasure locations in RE4, and most of the 1ups in Hard Corps Uprising.

but in games like uncharted 2 or portal where I just played for completion and was pushed towards the end, I barely remember anything about them; because I wasn't required to learn much about them to begin with.

I usually only play games (watch tv shows/movies/read) once.

So naturally i forget about the events of something i experienced as years go by.
