Do you call co-workers out on their bs?

A few weeks ago a girl kept going on about how she's gonna breed dogs, saying how they sell for $3000 each so if they do it even a few years they can buy a house. The problem? A basic Google search that night shows many sources saying that most don't and won't make money, often breaking even, and most of those that do make money are the less respectable breeders, neglecting basic upkeep.

Today I overheard two guys talking.

Guy 1 : "Wow, so how much do your headphones cost? $400?"
Guy 2 : "They were $500 actually."
Guy 1 : "Why so much?"
Guy 2 : "I'm in school for audio engineering."

The part that made me chuckle was his visible 'b' logo of his Beats by Dre headphones. Maybe I'm just too informed thanks to the smart people of Gaf, but does he really think those were his best choice for $500?

What say you Gaf, is it impolite to call people out for doing stupid things?

Yes, it would be incredibly obnoxious of you to call out your coworker for this.

B for Beats? Shit, the only B I let grace my ears comes from the audio engineering masters at BOSE. Worth every penny.

Good. But very overpriced

And to add to topic.

Depends who it is and what sort of relationship I have with them.
Boss: perhaps but do it in a way they don't realise
Co-worker: can go either way
Sub-ordinate: Yep, but not in front of others

Gotta be professional at work

Yes. If it has no effect on you then you'll just come off looking like an asshole.

Indeed, I've wandered that road several times before learning that.

As for the harmless part its not completely, as some warned during my quick research [pertaining to the first story] that you shouldn't breed dogs you're not prepared to raise if you have to. Her motives aren't pure and her - or atleast how she portrayed it at work - thought of breeding dogs being easy money was sickening.

I asked another co-worker and she said it would be rude but to not worry, she already bought one dog and is the type of person who'd do what she wants anyway.

More than $500 Beats headphones? For someone who wants his career to be in audio?

Yeah I always call people out for their bullshit, people need to face their failures. Of course I have no friends and nobody likes me though.

I don't even though I'm not working full-time (student here). That's probably why so many at work love to tell me about their bullshit but I see no point in confronting people I don't particularly care about over trivial stuff and risk damaging the work environment. At most I would sneak in some subtle mockery. I do love calling out my fellow students though, especially the arrogant breed.

I don't. To each his own etc. Why would I want to criticize their choices when they're perfectly happy with them ? It's not like they're asking for advice.

Where's the bullshit here? Are you going to play armchair audio engineer and slate this guy based on your opinion?

These things aren't even relevant to your life so let it be.

Because they're crazy people and need to be told so?

Guy at work when Bioshock Infinite came out :
"Yea, I bought Bioshock but traded it in before I beat it, too boring."

Did you think it was Call of Duty? Did the guy on the box with a gun sell you?
Did you have zero idea what the game was about?

I remember being in my teens thinking I knew it all. God speed, dawn crusader. You show these people!

On multiple occasions I've told coworkers they have terrible taste and should feel bad about themselves. They always laugh and think I'm joking.

Edit: Also, the old standby "You don't like something I like and therefore I now think less of you."

Wow, another one!

that guy sounds like he has aspergers or some shit

how can you even work with these people

how nice of you to help them

I tend to only call out BS if it's work related.
And mostly only if it affects me directly.

I usually bite my tongue, but a few weeks ago one guy was telling everyone that he shot a gun for the first time when he recently went clay pigeon shooting and did really well at hitting small the flying targets.... with a rifle!

After debating how ridiculously impossible that would be for half an hour (most of the people have zero experience with guns), I ran out of patience.

I got the name of the shooting range from him, called them up in front of everyone, and had them confirm that they only have shotguns, on speakerphone.

Now whenever I can, I make some joking reference to it: "What are your plans for the weekend? Assassinating Al Qaeda leaders for some secret branch of the government?"

Plenty of people on GAF share this guys opinion.

I started to call out people on their lies and bull shit and it only lead to more trouble as some people are too stupid to see their stupidity or get offended when they are caught in a lie. It is best to just ignore it as some people are never going to change no matter how many times you try to explain something. I have come to realize that the majority of people don't really know what they are doing so there is no reason to get angry over it as that is sadly how life is.

In his defence, it is a boring game.

I've only done this once.

I used to work in the same division as a woman who thought her life was pretty interesting. Every Monday morning she'd ask the group "how was your weekend? What did you do this weekend?"

Which is fine. That's normal small talk. But after everyone answered "oh fine, caught up with some house work, and then relaxed" she would answer with a 10 minute rambling story of every excruciating detail of her mundane weekend as if it was the most exciting stuff ever. It would be a run down of every single chore, store visited, and junk purchased.

She'd kind of hold you hostage or monopolise group conversations with this shit. One Monday I had enough. When asked the question "what did you do this weekend" I answered with:

Oh I fucked a midget and ate an orange, you know - the usual.

I think it's ok as long as it's subtle to their face and devastating behind their back.

I'm pretty guilty of this, I'll be sly and conniving to their face but once their gone I unleash numerous f-bombs on how stupid they are.

I tend to work alone a fair bit in my workplace, so I don't get along with others sometimes.

Only call people out when then say factually incorrect things. One of my co-workers once said that drinking Seltzer water dehydrates you because of the CO2 in it.....you just can't let people walk around saying dumb shit like that to other people

So yes, correct people when they are wrong but not on opinions

No I just go through my usual rotation of words "Cool, wow, daaaaaamn, nice" and move on with my day. Don't care enough to analyze, I have my own life to worry about, don't need to put down or demean other people, if it makes them feel better to lie or embellish the truth, so be it.

EDIT: Holy fuck I'm getting old. That might be the first time I ever use the word embellish. Is that even the right usage lol

I do this sometimes, but I do it seamlessly so I don't come off as a know-it-all jackass. I always start it with "You sure? I could've sworn I read somewhere that blah blah"

At work? I only correct things that pertain to my work and keep me employed. Besides that someone could buy 2k headphones from BOSE and I don't mind nor lose sleep over it.

I think I have been talking/gossiping too much lately. I used to be quiet as hell and I could tell people wanted to engage me in conversation so I gave in, big mistake. Most of the talk was about which area was better than which, could tell who probably talks shit about who, ugh I did not like it, gonna go back into quiet mode.

ITT: lots of assholes who think they're funny/witty/clever by calling other people out. I hate you all. You're the one who make office life such a pain.

Generally what I try to do when I get involved. Either that, or make a light hearted joke about the flaw in logic if possible.

Most of the time, if you really want to change someone's mind, it is better to ask questions or plant a seed of doubt than to lecture them. Nobody likes being corrected.

I have a co worker who corrects people all the time. Very annoying especially because he´s wrong quite often too.

Not so long ago a coworker had a little baby girl. He was telling where the name they gave the baby originated from. Now usually when you name your baby you make sure you know a thing or two about the name.
For some reason my annoying coworker had to give his 'facts' about the origine to the new dad. Even after being told multiple times by the dad he was wrong, he just kept on going on about it until the father of the child just gave up. *Cringe*

Nah, I don't need or want any kind of work place drama. I just avoid people who tell bragging stories during lunch/coffee.

ya lol. we all work at a gym, and due to me posting in the fitness thread, i know more than the average idiot, so i set them straight on their shit.

Yup. Bullshitters get put on blast all day. I can't spend as much time with my co-workers as I do and not do it or I'll start to hate them.
