Do you care about backwards compatibility at all?

Back in the day, ps3 early adopters had hardware bc, and when sony removed it A LOT of people complained. In the other hand, Xbox 360 bc was shit at the beginning and still is.
Now that the WiiU is out in two regions, some hacker presumably knows its processor clock speed, and If I'm not mistaken, that speed is connected to BC somehow, because the machine needs to be a multiplier of the original Wii's processor. What if Nintendo got rid of backwards compatibility, and started from scratch? Would you really care about losing bc, or would you rather have new hardware not limited to a certain architecture?

I know I wouldn't mind. I rarely play games more than once.

BC is HIGHLY important for me. Especially in the first half of a cinsole's life Alan.

I'd dare say that my Wii probably got the most play time out of the three simply because of BC.

Yes.

I don't need full BC of all previous systems (like i am fine with Wii-U only being BC with Wii and not GC) I think it's completely unacceptable to no have BC of your previous console and it's why i still have a launch PS3 and refuse to buy a slim.

Completely irrelevant. It's not like I'll chuck out my PS3 as soon as I get a PS4 or something.

Yes, I do. I would like to put my PS3 somewhere out of the way when the next gen of consoles come out. For people who don't care to hold on to their console for nostalgia reasons it should be important too because you can sell your PS3/360 and put it toward your new console without the fear of not being able to play your older games. Most importantly, I think controller backward compatibility is even more important. The next systems better be able to use PS3/360 controllers because I hate paying $60 for a new controller when I have 4 from the previous system just sitting there. The Wii U is at least doing that much right.

Absolutely, I love the fact that Vita can play PSP games and make them look nicer and sometimes run better even. I always go back to older games so it's definitely important to me!

Backward compatibility matters a lot at launch, when there isn't much of anything new to pick from. Afterward, not so much.

I really appreciate Wii U's BC right now because my main display for a year and a half only has HDMI/VGA input and thus my Wii has been unused and in storage for a long time.

Yes, I have a couple of hundreds of games on Steam and I sure as hell hope I can be able to play 99% of them on hardware/OS 10 years from now.

Hmmmmm didn't know that about the wii u, so it could have been faster with no BC

Interesting, well I've always liked BC since I sometimes play old games that I beat or when games go on clearance I pick up a ton to play.

I'd say keep it if it doesn't change the systems speed.

Of course, it's one of the defining features of any console for me!

What if i want to play a classic game that is more than 10 years old and the system i want to run it on no longer works?

Yeah I do, I hate the BC support xbox1 has on 360, I hope all xbox1 games will be playable on the Nextbox without any glitches.

For current(7th gen) retail games not really, I can connect my PS360 via hdmi and play. I'll probably have a ps3 under my tv till 2015.

DD games should be BC.

It was a lot more important when I was younger, and usually had to sell an old console if I wanted to buy a new one. Less so now that I'm older and working, since I just keep my old consoles around anyway.

I did really like how the Wii supported Gamecube controllers though. I never really liked the feel of the Classic Controller (or the Classic Controller Pro), so it was great to be able to use the GC pad on stuff like Smash and Sonic Colours. BC is worth it just for that.

Kinda, yeah. I have a lot of games for the 360 I really enjoy and it recently dawned on me that, more likely than not, I'm not going to be able to replay those once the next gen comes around.

It's why I decided to invest in a PC.

Backward compatibility matters a lot at launch, when there isn't much of anything new to pick from. Afterward, not so much.

Yep.

For example, I hope that the next Xbox will be backwards compatible so I could play Halo 4 on it.

Having to switch back and forth between Xbox 360 & the next Xbox would be annoying.

Backwards compatibility also helps me save space in my setup. So yeah, I care about it.

It's very important to me, particularly at the beginning of a console's cycle. Ideally I'd be able to continue playing games from the previous gen if/while things are quiet. The feature becomes less important after a year or two though - provided things have picked up.

I also love the idea of having a system that can play all previous titles in a company's history - pie in the sky, of course, but it's nice when you come close and have the option to purchase retro games as well as play games you own from the previous cycle.

I love that my Vita can play Vita, PSP and PSone games, it makes the console so much more worthwhile. Nintendo's virtual console offerings could have been better but they had the right idea with the Wii.

Portable systems, I do just because I don't want to lug a whole bunch of systems with me. Consoles, I used to think I did... the more I think about it the less I care about having to keep the old ones around.

For PS4 not so much as i intend to keep my PS3 (and have another set-up for PS2/Wii/GC games).
But i do hope the next Xbox supports BC because i don't have a 360 and there are 3-4 exclusive games that interest me on the system.

Absolutely! I don't have time to play all the games I want during a console/handheld cycle. I want to be able to go back if I want to without hauling out old systems.

I would greatly prefer it yes... even if it drives up the cost by $100 or so. I loved that the original PS3 had it and wished they'd left a high-end model on the market all this time for those that want it.

If the next Xbox comes in multiple models as the rumors state, I will most definitely buy one day-one if it has 360 compat... simply because i've never owned a 360 so it instantly increases the value for me by a great deal.

No not really in home consoles.

I have a huge backlog already and I do on every system, When I get a new one I probably won't have time for playing old games.

In addition, my PS3 won't stop working when I buy a PS4.

On the Vita though I think it is more important, I can play that more often than the PS3, plus playing a PS1 game on my 40" TV looks like ass, but playing it on the Vita doesn't.

I've never understood peoples desire to need CFW so they can continue playing SNES games or whatever. Maybe it's because I never had those systems, maybe it's because I just don't have the time to play that many games.

For DD stuff, absolutely, as those servers won't be lasting long otherwise.

For normal games I usually don't care but the next gen isn't going to be the jump that sd to hd was so I can see going back being a bit easier.

Well, it's cool to have a console that plays all my collection so I don't need to be plugging another console when I want to play an older game.

I have a launch PS3 and I haven't played a PS2 game on it since I built my PC.

I don't want to lose access to games like Bayonetta by replacing my current gen systems, and I hope all the digital stuff transfers over, or I'm done paying for digital games.

Yep. Loving the fact that my 3DS can also play DS games. (that was one of the reasons why I got the console, actually)

What if Nintendo got rid of backwards compatibility, and started from scratch? Would you really care about losing bc, or would you rather have new hardware not limited to a certain architecture?

I find backwards compatibility definitely useful. But not at any price.
You may be right that Nintendo focused too much on bc. From my perspective it would have been better to just include old Wii hardware for bc and pick a new CPU from scratch. Might have come a tiny bit more expensive, but would've been worth it imo.

Don't think I've ever used backwards compatibility features outside of a few PS1 games on PS2 and even then it wasn't something super important to me.
If it means hampering the systems potential by using old architecture then absolutely, drop it. I'll live with buying HD collections of the one or two old games I want to play.

I usually don't buy at launch so I don't need BC to prop up the usual weak launch and post launch drought.

If it is included at no cost or detriment to anything else then cool include it. If not, then I don't want it. I can plug in an old system.

I don't care about it on Wii U because i didn't bother with Wii, but i have a lot of PS3 and 360 games so it matters a lot with the next Microsoft and Sony consoles.

More seriously tho i probably won't bother with any next gen consoles until i've played everything i like on the current gen to death. Realistically it could keep me going all of next gen. If the next MS or Sony consoles do have full BC and look appealing, I'll get them early on.

Yeah, I still play GC games from time to time and I always use the GC controller when possible in Wii games. Had Wii U been backwards compatible with Gamecube, I'd have already bought it.

Yes. To a certain extent.

If it's offered in a new system, cool. If it's not, I'd make a few posts about being annoyed the feature is gone. In the end I'll deal with it. When I bought the 3DS, I've bought about 26 DS titles I missed out on. So I do like it.

For portable systems, yes. I love my 3DS XL so much because the DS game library is so large and diverse. It helps to not have to lug around a normal DS system.

For home consoles, not as important, but it's a nice bonus.

No, not really. It might be useful at the beginning of a generation but after a while it's irrelevant.

Not at all, for any system. It seemed like an important thing to me until the ps3 removed BC and the reality was, it made no difference. I keep my old consoles, and I don't spend a great deal of time looking back outside of personal favourites. I buy a new console to play new games, so BC = not a big deal.

It depends on whether I own the old consoles or not. I never had a Gamecube, so the Wii having BC was a big enough part of of my decision to get one that I doubt I would have done so if it had been missing. About half of the games that I bought for the Wii were GC games.

MS's next console having BC or not will the key deciding factor in me getting one, since I never bought a 360, but really want to play Shadow Complex, Rez HD, and Fez, among others.

I don't care about it on Wii U because i didn't bother with Wii, but i have a lot of PS3 and 360 games so it matters a lot with the next Microsoft and Sony consoles.

Isn't there a single Wii game you missed that you'd like to try on the Wii U?

I think it would be very interesting if neither the PS4 or the XB3 offered backwards compatibility.

Would the hardcore that does care about BC just shun both systems or would they just lump it and buy whichever system they were interested in anyway.
