They laughed at me when I said the Helix is going to give Steam trouble. Well who's.... Wait a min. If this portable is as powerful as a PS5 and can dock to my TV. I might use it for all my PS exclusives not coming to PC. Again Steam is looking like they are in trouble.

Would you say Steam was in trouble in the days before PlayStation released PC ports of their games? I think maybe I'm misunderstanding your premise. Is this specifically a reference to the Steam Machine?

MLiD claiming leaks indicate PS6 Portable will have backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games. Safe to assume it's digital only (or streaming from a console, probably).

And it will be optimized for 1080p output (so ~540p internal res with PSSR3). I guess it won't look too great on 4k screen...

they wouldn't be pushing power save mode on devs if it was as powerful. well... maybe wiht upscaling & the like. as for valve I doubt they care they already said what they want to achive and when we'll get a deck 2.

Well damn. There's always a catch with these portables.

I mean, it could end up with better looking games thanks to modern tech and PSSR3, but raw power is rumored to be around half of PS5 GPU power.

I guess you can't beat basic physics, ~20W vs. 200W.

Honestly that's fine for me. I'm pretty happy with how my switch 2 looks on my 4k tv. I'm willing to accept these compromises on a portable/hybrid device.

No offense, but we are all still laughing at whatever this comment is.

TLDR of the video? I swear my life is not miserable enough to have the time for that

Listening to it now. He's with Colin Moriarty this episode.

One of the topics they talk about is why Hulst hasn't been fired yet. Supposedly a few months after being Co-CEO, he got demoted. Rather than firing him, Sony is keeping him there because it would cost them less mpney to do so. Something in the contractual obligation someone in his status was able to manage there.

There's timestamps in the vid description if you only want to consume bits of it.

Better AI Summary

This episode of Broken Silicon features Colin Moriarty discussing the future of the gaming industry, focusing on PlayStation, Xbox, and the next generation of hardware.

Key Discussion Points:

  • The State of PlayStation (7:35 - 12:09): The conversation explores recent structural changes at Sony, including studio closures like Firewalk and the shifting focus away from a pure 'games-as-a-service' model back toward high-quality exclusives.
  • Xbox Helix Strategy (13:37 - 23:39): They debate Microsoft's next-gen strategy. Tom highlights the ambiguity surrounding whether the new Xbox hardware will support Steam, noting that Microsoft's marketing language avoids explicitly confirming it. They discuss the potential for a handheld device and the challenges of competing in the current market.
  • PS6 Pricing and Expectations (1:06:09 - 1:25:23): Tom argues that price increases for the PS5 were driven by inflation and supply shocks rather than corporate greed. They discuss that future hardware, like a potential PS6, may benefit from newer, more efficient, and cheaper technology compared to current PS5 components.
  • PS6 Portable and Backwards Compatibility (2:27:41 - 2:30:25): Tom confirms a leak regarding a PlayStation portable device, noting that it will feature native backwards compatibility for PS4, PS5, and PS6 titles, which is seen as a crucial requirement for market success.
  • The Future of Gaming (2:35:02 - 2:41:22): They touch upon the impact of AI in game development and the industry's need to move away from 'slop' (low-effort) content. Colin expresses a desire to see the revival of social experiences like PlayStation Home.

Conclusions:

  • Hardware Evolution: Newer technology is naturally becoming more efficient, which could allow for more cost-effective hardware designs in the next generation, provided that manufacturing and economic conditions stabilize.
  • The Importance of Backwards Compatibility: Both speakers agree that any future PlayStation hardware (console or portable) must include deep backwards compatibility to remain competitive and retain the player base.
  • Strategic Pivot: Both Sony and Microsoft are in a period of re-evaluating their strategies, with Sony seemingly correcting course on their live-service investments and Microsoft facing pressure to clearly define the value proposition of their upcoming hardware ecosystem.

well, it's probably not up to Microsoft if it will or not.

the way Helix sounds to me, is that it's gonna be a console that has a very limited Windows PC mode. which is probably down to making sure the system is as secure as possible (meaning anti piracy and actual user security from viruses etc).
so my prediction is that you'll only be allowed to install programs found in the Microsoft Store, similar to how Windows 11S works, only that you can't disable the S mode here.

Steam is currently not available in the Microsoft Store. GoG Galaxy, the Epic Store, and Ubisoft Connect are available. so it is basically up to Valve to release Steam in the Microsoft Store, and if they do it will be available on Helix, if they don't, then it will not.

Gabe was super anti MS apps ~Windows 8.

Gabe was super anti MS apps ~Windows 8.

mainly because he thought Microsoft wants to lock down windows similar to Apple locking down iOS. I think it has been shown by now that they don't (UWP failing miserably helped of course)

so maybe he'll re-evaluate. 😅

Obviously speculation on that "S" version of a PS6 (1:27:18)

If you can add more raytracing and AI features pricing it at $399, I could see that being a thing that sells well, but I'd doubt it would be that low. Maybe maintain at $499-$599. Then the base Console can be for the early adopters and/or those that can afford a higher priced PS6. Just have to avoid the hassle for devs to optimize their games for smaller SKU somehow.

MLID says Microsoft is attempting to get devs to use their GDK and not to bother with Steam. I have a hard time believing MS is that dumb.

No need to rush out a damn potato thats barely faster than a ps5 pro. Give us more cutting edge internals closer to 2030.
That is definitely not happening even if it released in the 2030 holidays. Contacts have been inked, manufacturing capacity has been allocated, Sony will purchase the Orion and Canis SoCs AMD makes, why will they not sell products using them?

True. Maybe more training time for the machine learning AI and also add few more features to the controller, etc. And possibly the tech gpu and cpu that will be use will be cheaper by then.

They've written off more than that on disaster Bungie acquisition. In terms of reserved production capacity, AMD/TMSC would prob be fine deferring 2027 production to 2029/2030 and free up capacity for higher margin datacenter gear while AI bubble still not popping.

If the portable version is as powerful as the desktop one then it means the desktop one is being held back. There is no way around it.

2029 ps6 launch is a possiblity which is fine for me

nah, I'm glad that Helix launches next year. this gen started with GPUs that were not fit for the future, resulting in sub 1080p games everywhere, and in insanely low quality raytraying being forced into games, looking like graphics glitches.

A lot of people already got a pc for Xbox games. So waiting for ps6 is not a big deal. Already getting helix or better performance for those games.

How the hell can a device be called a PS6 if its and inferior product than a PS5, lmao

This portable shit is DOA, "bu... but Nintendo" they did it first and reap the rewards, no one else can or will be able to do the same, the sooner the higher-ups realize the better...
