Do you double space after a period?

I was taught to double space and I still do. It looks better. Makes a nice clean break between sentences. And then most online typing formats automatically "correct" it to one space anyway.

You can't use double spaces in NeoGAF and many other forums or comments sections. HTML by default only sees one space, and then you have to put in special characters for more like   or do CSS rules.

A r e y o u s u r e?

Edit: Holy wow it removed my spaces.

Oh my god, I completely forgot this was a thing. I learned it when I was like, 10 or 11 or something and then it was never referenced again.

I always double space after periods, yes. It's how I learned to write in school, and it looks better. I find it actually really annoying that forum softwares all (or at least mostly) seem to automatically reduce spaces after periods to one, let me use double space after a period, sentences look better that way! I noticed this problem (that forums don't allow two spaces) some time ago, but still write all forum posts everywhere with two spaces after periods because that's just how I write.

Wow, totally surprised to see all the single space replies at the top. Yeah, I was taught double space and in my work field everyone use double space for sentence breaks.

Fascinating!

Maybe depends on when you were taught? And how old school your teacher was.

I learned in 94 in a high school typing class. I only changed a few years ago, due to having to format correctly for freelance writing work. It is difficult, surely, but you get over it.

Wait people don't double space? That is so weird to me. How is that a thing? It breaks up sentences and just looks better. Fuck you guys, I'm double spacing still!

My mom taught me to double space after periods when I was growing up. I don't do it anymore though because no one else does. Maybe it's how they were taught back in the 60s or something idk

I was taught to and grew up doing it. Stopped doing in college. Typography class educated me on the horrendousness that is double spacing.

Then I learned kerning and my life was ruined.

I always double space, it was how I was taught. If NeoGAF has been correcting this for me, then I've not noticed in 7 years.

I think it helps space out sentences and make paragraphs more readable. Huh.

blame whomever taught you "keyboarding".

honestly the monospace has been obsolete since the Mac added proportional fonts. using a double space in a proportional font is a typographical crime. you're adhering to an old habit that simply no longer applies.

The funny thing about this is you appear to not realize that your second space is being parsed out when the post shows in the thread, and that has always been the case. It might make you feel better as you're writing the text, but it's literally not changing a thing about how any of the posts here (nor most places on the internet) are being read.

I always thought that the people who did so were applying the grammatical rules from their own native language onto English.

I was even more confused by the people claiming that they do, yet their posts indicate otherwise. (Until I learned that the forum auto-corrected that. Creepy.) I felt like I was being trolled. I've never see anyone actually do it in person, though, like on an essay or something.

Your post is single spaced though. You can only see the double spacing when you go to quote your post and see it in the editor, thus it's completely redundant and inefficient.

Almost like people who use Caps Lock to type a single capital letter :P

I was taught to double space as a child, so I usually do. Recently though I've noticed myself single spacing sometimes when I'm not really paying attention.
They taught me this in elementary school, but I stopped shortly after.

Sometimes my students will type stuff up with double spaces after periods, but it's only to make their paper look longer while being able to go "but I was told it was how to do it". I make them redo it.

That's a pretty shitty thing to do considering you basically just admitted you realize there's a good chance that actually is how they were taught.

I didn't know this was a thing. Although, I type pretty much all my documents using LaTeX so it might actually put a longer space after periods since the typesetting is done automatically.

I only discovered single spacing recently when I was trying to help an employee with the wording of a formal email and he couldn't understand why I kept saying two spaces. My mind was blown. It's also being blown again from discovering that GAF automatically removes the extra space!
