Do you have friends that hate mainstream shit...

Nope but I'm the friend that hates mainstream shit.

Nothing wrong with hating mainstream stuff but hating it because it's mainstream is just retarded. I had a friend like that once. He used to be really into Metallica when they started out (we grew up in the 80s). He used to really like them and say stuff like "I'm the only real Metallica fan around here". And then one day, he didn't like them anymore so I asked him why and he said "they're too popular, too mainstream you know?" Me: "??? What?". I could not understand that.

Are you sure it's not because they started sucking?

:lol Your friend didn't know that the biggest metal band in the world wasn't a mainstream act??

I show your friend Iced Earth and I bet he'll think Metaliica started to git gud again.

My friends and I are late 20s to early 30s. We don't care about what's mainstream we leave that to teenagers.

Hating something because everyone else likes it is pretty stupid reasoning. If I knew someone like that, I would think they were desperate for attention. Or just incapable of articulating why they truly dislike something.

Yeah, I have a friend like that. The kind that when his favorite indie band starts blowing up, he'll immediately drop them and think they're sell outs.

For me, if something is good and appeals to me, then I don't hide that I enjoy it. Heck, I liked TASM2.

Bland, boring entertainment doesn't stop being bland or boring just because you get a job and have more responsibilities. If anything, I have less time to spend on entertainment so I want to make it worth my while and seek out things that have a little more flavor to them.

Yeah, I am that guy.

Both of those movies are super-mainstream. Reservoir Dogs was "secret cool" for about ten minutes in the early '90s.

They're both excellent. Pulp Fiction is probably better.

I don't hate most mainstream stuff, there a few things that I like too.
Often it happens that even if I do like something mainstream (say Game of Thrones, or even Tarantino as mentioned), I just don't consider it THAT good. Like Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds are imho his only masterpieces. Django was totally fine, simply not incredible.
Or sometimes especially for music it happens that I simply do not know some mainstream ones. Like, legitimately never heard 'em.
For movies it's 50/50, there are mainstream ones I totally dislike (most superheroes ones), some I hate (Hobbit), and then I get far more excited than most people for other ones (Pacific Rim, for example).

So basically are your friends are hipsters?

Yeah I have a few friends kinda like this. I just start talking about how great Katy Perry's Prism is, or how I really like that new Ariana Grande song with Iggy Izalea and how I'm stoked to watch the remake of Oldboy this weekend or maybe I'll just play a few rounds of CoD Ghosts to kill some time before the Yankees game comes on.

They generally get annoyed by this point and we talk about something else

I have two friends like that. They were much worse when they were younger, but when their anti-mainstream sides flair up, I enjoy mocking them relentlessly for it.

Yeah, I have friends like that. But then I have friends who think that only 'mainstream' things are worthwhile.

Personally, I believe there is both great and horrible stuff coming from both camps.

Yes. He doesn't do it with EVERYTHING because he loves pulp fiction, but there are many times he'll hate on something just because a lot of people like it and it's annoying as hell.

My teens years were spent neck-deep in late 80s/early 90s alternative culture where insufferable contrarians were a dime a dozen. To this day some of them still are, and I still take great pleasure in enjoying things that make them boil with rage. Yes, I'm aware of the irony.

I have friends that will change their positive opinion to a negative one the moment something goes mainstream.

Them: "Dude, this song is so amazing."
Me: "Yeah, it's pretty ok."
*Two months later, the song is played on the radio, is all over Reddit/YouTube/etc.*
Them: "Jesus, this song fucking sucks."
Me: "It's still the same song it was two months ago though."

I know a few people like that and it's aggravating. Then when they finally stop being delusional and admit that pop music is good they pretend it's in some hip-beyond-hip way. Just listen to good songs and leave it at that for fuck sake

I certainly had a phase growing up where I didn't want to like something super popular because that wasn't cool, for whatever arbitrary reason. And on the other side I had a friend who hated indie stuff because it was indie, lol.

Now I try to be a lot more open minded and judge stuff based on a raw "do I like it" criteria. This has led to me enjoying a bit of pop music, particularly Lady Gaga. And I really started getting into watching professional sports when I stopped considering it a 'jock' thing to do. If something is fun to watch or do and it's not a horrible thing, then why not? Though you could argue professional sports are really dangerous and harmful to the players but I think that's getting better over time.

Yeah, myself. Though I don't hate things specifically because its mainstream. My taste is just bizarre and mainstream anything doesn't really cater to that. Especially when music is concerned.

The OP's example is pretty strange to me. Reservoir Dogs is just as popular as Pulp Fiction so it sounds those people are just trying to sound cool.

that op is called a hipster, and no I don't have friends like that because I don't befriend with hipsters.

But I do have very closed minded friends who only like mainstream things like mainstream video games and movies.

BRO WHEN DID JAMES HETFIELD LEARN TO SING

I have a friend that talks endlessly about Metallica like they're metal gods who are so legit and GENUINE, and whenever he gets obnoxiously bad I pull out the photo I have of James Hetfield shopping at Banana Republic.

He loses his shit. :)

You carry around a photo of James Hetfield shopping?

Well.. I happen to dislike a lot of things that are mainstream, but that's just because I have really odd tastes, not just because it's mainstream or whatever. That's a silly reason to dislike something.

Friends would say that I'm that person. Sorry I don't like Facebook now and don't want to go to the theater to watch yet another comic book movie.

for no other reason than it's mainstream? Like the people that want to pound in your head how bad Pulp Fiction is, and how vastly superior Reservoir Dogs is. Can't they both be really fucking good? At first you may think "so? that's just their opinion", but no. The further into the discussion you'll get, the more likely they'll slip and just spit it out "it's too mainstream" or some garbage like that. Why do some people do this? Does it give us a sense of intellectual superiority over the 'common folks'?

This is usually my take-away from it.

You have obscure tastes in things? Great. You actively shun "mainstream" things because lots of people like it? You're probably a douche.
