Us gamers, huh?
Am amazed that nobody posted that comic in this thread.
Us gamers, huh?
I identify as a person whos hobby is to play games, I don't like being tagged as a "gamer".

I am as much a "gamer" as I am a "reader" or a "viewer". I don't see the point of discussing it at all.
I don't think many people do, the OP has just positioned the question weirdly. Like, if I played golf and someone asked me 'Oh, so you're a golfer', I'd probably say yes. But I wouldn't walk around introducing myself as a golfer to people. I think 'gamer' is the same. I would never go 'Hello there, nice to meet you, I'm a gamer'. But if someone asked me if I was a gamer, I'd say yes instead of this 'Uh, no! I play games but I don't define myself by my hobby' stuff.
Are you a gambler, OP?
Pretty much, there's always been a distaste for the term because it brings to mind media portrayals of it.
I think the definition is always changing though, it's really broad. I imagine a stereotypical gamer now a days typically watches Let's Play or Twitch, or listens to gaming site podcasts, I don't do either of those. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just that's a huge part of being a modern gamer in my eyes. I've fallen out of posting a lot in gaming discussion on here as well. I've become more selective with games as well, in the past I was interested in like 10+ games a year now it's more like a handful if they can meet their shipping dates.
Acting - actor
Teaching - teacher
Painting - painter
gaming - gamer
Yup, why not.

The hell is this even supposed to mean?
Correct.
Am I a movie-er? A book reader-er? A runner-er? A weightlifter-er? A dining out-er? Nah man it's just a hobby I indulge in like everything else.

First post.
Games are a big part of my life but I'm so much more than that. And of all the hobbies to be labeled by, gaming would be the worst.
If I had to label myself I'd say "enthusiast".
You can identify as something and see yourself as belonging to that group without announcing it to the world
No, why do you ask?
We're like cut from the same cloth only I identify with the termIt's cool with me if you don't, though.
Regarding media latching on to it; fuck 'em. Only yesterday we had a story over here attempting to connect a hacker to gaming. And thankfully, in the UK, we never had any of the Gamer Fuel or Gamer Glasses (WTF are Gamer Glasses? xD) nonsense. Not when I was in my formative years, anyway.
But most of those are professions in their typical context, not hobbies. Idk. Maybe you're right.
But those are things you give the world. Gaming is consumption. You don't call people who love and watch football Watchers. You say they're fans of football.

I've been playing video games for 25 years, you're damn right I call myself a gamer.
Don't know why I shouldn't. I don't associate anything negative with it.

I can't stand the whole gamer culture thing, so not really. Not to mention the latent sexism/racism/homophobia/etc that's often associated with it.
Not specifically here, but you know as well as I do those things are pretty damn prevalent.

Hell no. I cringe at it. It's more of an insult than anything.
