Do you judge people by their avatars?

Furry and anime I understand, but why hot chicks as well?

I'm curious as to what degree anime avatars freak people out. Are anime guys fine? If it's only girls, do they have to be especially moe, or do they have to be scantily clad?

Is it just that people think anime is weird in general?

I'm not sure why. I'm assuming it's some hairy guy who is sexually attracted to his avatar but wants it to represent him at the same time. It's just an irrational gut feeling on my part though.

Feel kind of the same way about a lot of the little girl anime avatars.

I can't speak to everyone else, but again, to me, it's just if it's moe. I can't really envision myself ever associating with someone who was into that in real life so I'm less likely to do it online as well. It comes across as the person being immature -- a manchild if you will.

I view avatars like they're t-shirts. If I see someone with a Dodgers shirt (or a Vin Scully avatar for instance), I get excited. I want to go say hello and shake their hand. I'll yell out "Go Dodgers!" if someone is wearing some gear. I met my wife because she had an oasis shirt on so I went up to her after class and struck up a conversation ("I love your shirt!"). If I saw an adult wearing a Justin Bieber shirt though, I'd just shake my head and would immediately judge them. How could I not? If they're wearing My Little Pony, I'm embarrassed for them -- this applies online.

I honestly think the people saying they don't judge posters by their avatars are lying and or just not recognizing unconscious actions that we can't avoid.

I just think anime in particular has certain undesirable connotations. Don't get me wrong, I love some anime, but it's still quite a specialist area of interest and I feel it can also be quite cliquey. I do also feel the same about hardcore comic book fans, they have their interest and whatnot, and that's fine, but I can't stand hardcore comic book talk, so it instantly makes me want to associate with them less, even though there is probably a very nice person behind the screen.

It's hard to quantify, and it's all prejudice and whatnot, but it's just human nature. If you love anime so much that you're effectively going to use it as your face on GAF, then some people are going to be a bit suspicious.

That's fair enough I suppose. Good answers. I don't mind if it's judged, the only thing I do mind is when some people dismiss someone else's argument because of an anime avatar. That, I feel, just isn't right. I personally choose my avatar because I find the characters awesome, not necessarily for any other reason.

Generalizations.

I mean sure there's definitely some anime fans that say some really questionable stuff but somehow that paints the rest of us (and I say "us" because I use anime avatars sometimes too) in a negative light and somehow our opinions are seen less "trustworthy". There's also the "all new anime is just moe shit" crowd which is also a lazy as fuck generalization. There's some really intelligent and level-headed anime fans on this message board and it's really unfortunate that what they say might not be taken as seriously at this point.

Makes sense as well, but the same stands for other niche mediums like Comic books and even Video Games. I guess that Anime just hasn't gotten to that point, and I likely never will. Video Games and Comics still have certain negative connotations but they've certainly improved their image and gained more acceptance.

That'd be a bit too on the nose for me. Come on, the little guy's all kinds of cute.
It's kinda cute but no:

Personally, I know using my real face probably gets me judged more negatively than a random picture would (because I look like a right smug cunt), but it just doesn't bother me.
Perhaps because I'm a smug cunt.

that pic is like 5 years old, youre prolly grey bearded and snaggle toothed by now

Nintendo and Walter White/BB avatars. People with those invariably make terribad posts on the reg so I'm quite prejudiced when it comes to them.

Here's a question, why is it anime avatars = Loss of credibility, but the same doesn't apply to other mediums like Comic Books, and cartoons? Why is it specifically anime avatars that get that treatment but not others?

for me it goes way back in other, smaller forums where the vast majority of people i found insufferable on the forum had anime sigs, avatars, and/or names. Things are much different now, but its hard to break old habits.

What if you just took your username from someone else years ago because you couldn't think of anything else and never bothered to change it years later

Had I not known that fact it wouldn't matter as I wouldn't know

But now that I do you are clearly a lazy thief, a terrible friend, and not creative. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I may be joking

I've noticed this too. Same goes for people with True Detective avatars for some reason.

Nope. Avatars, frankly, are just an alias. Sure, some may express what one would be into, but to judge simply off of an avatar is shallow.

Only if the person makes a questionable post.

Example being, someone arguing that they're not pedophiles because they're ephebophiles or whatever and they have an kid anime/pony avatar...in my mind they're being judged.

I don't necessarily judge you for it but it bothers me that it was a mirror shot as the COD text on your shirt is backwards which I find annoying
The best part is that it isn't me.

And I never played a cod lol
Besides that one time at a friends house

I chickened out of using a cropped version of this because I wasn't sure it would be appropriate and it's pretty weird.

I just ditched the Rodgers avatar because I only post in NFL-GAF during the regular season and I imagine some people began with a more negative opinion.

I don't know if I judge the content of avatars often, but I do judge shoddy presentation.

you got me then I suppose. Again though it's not really the subject matter so much as the way the picture was taken. For instance you could easily flip that photo and it wouldn't bother me but obviously do whatever you please of course

Obviously he changed his avatar to that after this post but still works

This thread is making me think about changing my avatar...

Maybe I'll change it back to this

Or just switch between my current one and the Evil Casper one.
