Do you take a multivitamin everyday?

Fish oil, vitamin D, CoQ10 daily.

A multivitamin every once in a while when I happen to see the bottle lying around and say, "okay, why not. i feel like swallowing something."

Vitamin D is the one I'm least sure about. I think it probably has health benefits to take it, but I dunno what the ideal dosage is or w/e. Living in Tucson, AZ I just make sure to spend a few minutes (stress "few") in the sun each day.

Go get a physical and have your vitamin D levels checked. The doctor will tell you if you need to supplement, and how much.

You guys are blowing my mind here.
I thought there was actually a poster named "Everybody in this thread." Now, I'm sad.

I take a Centrum vitamin every day, because I am a bad balancer of health food things.

I always forget to take my multivitamin. I would take it with my daily pills, but I'd need to start eating breakfast since the iron makes me nauseous on an empty stomach.

i think they mean multivitamin supplements and not actually vitamins themselves. Afaik, there is zero research multivitamins have benefits to anyone outside of famine zones. That said, i figure they are cheap enough and there is zero effort to taking them so i take them,

Can you get vitamin poisoning or something like that? I always though any excess was excreted via urine and as long as you drink a lot of water the kidneys will be fine. I know minerals can harm in excess, but what about vitamins?

The problem is knowing what is a decent diet.

In my case I eat mainly healthy food but I don't really get bored with the same food as other people seem to do and I worry I have a bad diet because of that.

I don't take one every day or even every week but sometimes I do.

CRON-O-Meter is a useful tool.

I take several whole-food vitamins. I try to stay away from isolated minerals and vitamins. I have noticed the difference.

If you want to take a vitamin which you will feel the difference, take a "Super B complex". It has over 6,000% of the daily value of several B vitamins. It will give you energy without the crash. It's the main ingredient in the 5 hour energy shots.

You won't overdose if you stick to the instructions, but there are studies indicating that taking to much vitamin may increase the cancer risk. You should be more careful about vitamin A, D, E, and K since they don't pass through your body as quickly.

I started taking a multi-vitamin, plus super B-complex everyday about a month ago.

I've always had a fucked up diet and thought it would provide whatever I am not getting from my diet.

I know my body isn't taking in 100% of the vitamin's contents, or anything close to it... but I am willing to believe that it is taking in enough to have a positive effect overall.

Whatever it doesn't take in, it'll piss and shit out. And I'm cool with that.

The "crash" comes from sugar intake. Drink any calorie free energy drink, and no crash.

Hate those douchey 5 hour energy commercials.

That's weird, I was just having a conversation about this today. I explained to my friend that I've been trying out low sodium V8s this week, and he responded "Just take multivitamins." I said "I've heard some things that claim they're pointless." He asked, "What, did some dude on The Neogaf tell you that?"

Now I can say yes, yes some dude did.

i participated in a supplement/vitamins experiment as a part of a sociology of health and illness course, and i'll try to dig up the results. but i'd recommend a documentary called "food matters," all about raw/organic foods and all that hippy bullshit, but it has a fantastic segment discussing supplements/vitamin benefits.

Fat-soluble vitamins (ADEK) do not pass through urine at all, in fact, and are stored in body fat until they're utilized.

So it's easier to OD on those, but probably still difficult unless you take a shitload of them and/or eat polar bear liver.

I think I'd actually try this...

Too many polar bears in the world threatening those poor eskimos anyway.

Alright, no worries from me. I'm sure lung cancer is the last of the cancers I may suffer from (of course I know the implications of this study may go further).

I believed very strongly in Ginko Biloba in college while trying to memorize things, and my job now is very mentally strenuous, so I keep taking it. I also take St Johns Wort (supposedly improves mood) and a standard multivitamin.
Does it help? No idea. But it costs me little to swallow 4 pills every morning.
On Gummi-vitamins: My wife can't swallow pills so those a life-saver.
Also: Tucson-GAF representing!

No multivitamin, but I do take a fiber supplement. I do a poor job eating whole grains and such. Metamucil comes in handy.

Most serious studies I read suggests that multivitamins are a waste of money at best.

I take fish oil and vitamin D.

For what it's worth, my doctor share my view on vitamins.

oh yeah. it's phenomenal. i'm not even generally a hardcore advocate for these kinds of things, but when it comes to general health and well being, it's definitely more worthwhile to take vitamins to prevent chronic illness and the like. you might not feel like anything is different but that's the idea to a certain extent.

i take fish oil, vitamin a and vitamin e.

it clears up all my acne pretty much and it makes you feel good ( the fish oil )

Anyone else burp up fish stank when taking Omega 3 pills?

I found a lemon flavoured oil that eliminates most of that. You still get a tiny bit of fish odour, but nowhere near what the plain stuff (or the pills) have.

If you have a normal diet, and aren't suffering from some medical vitamin deficiency, you shouldn't need multivitamins or any vitamin supplement.

I'd argue that if you need multivitamins you should look to changing your diet, as the benefits are greater.

well I don't eat right, like nearly at all.

So I sometimes take a multivitamin

This thread reminds me I need to research and see if there's any truth behind this... but my doctor mentioned to me that taking a supplement is a good idea because they're finding that the way we grow crops is leading to a reduction in the amount of vitamins they're producing. So even if you eat a good quantity of fruits/vegetables - you may still be coming up short on the recommended.

Anyone else heard of this?

No and I don't really eat a large variety of foods. I do drink the occasional Vitamin Well but its more for the great taste (Unlike the shitty Vitamin Water from Coca-Cola) and the fact its like a third of the calories of a Cola so its a healthier choice.

Studies have shown that taking vitamin A & E does not lengthen but shorten life expectation.

Too lazy to look it up but it was some big scandinavian study.

I stopped taking GNC Mega Men, or any of their other vitamins, after I found out they use sawdust as a filler. Fuck that, I'm not putting that in my body anymore.

Most commercial vitamins use fillers such as coal tar, sand, dirt, and soap to bind the vitamins together. Here are some tests you can do to check the quality of the vitamins you use.

Step 1

Take a glass and put 3 inches or so of white vinegar in it. Drop one of your vitamins in the glass. Come back after 20 minutes. Here are your items to check.

Step 2

If the vitamin capsule/tablet (and its contents) has not dissolved in the vinegar, it is not dissolving in your stomach either. It is really passing through your body on its way to the sewer system. There have been doctors who have seen x-rays of a well-known multi-vitamin in its original form in the intestinal tract, and you can still read the label.

Step 3

If there is dirt floating on the top of the vinegar, then the manufacturer is using sawdust as a filler. If there is grit in the bottom of the glass, the manufacturer is using sand as a filler. If there is dirt floating on the top of the vinegar, then the manufacturer is using sawdust as a filler.

Step 4

If you really want to continue this experiment, wrap your vitamin in aluminum foil and bake it in the oven for a few minutes on 350 degrees. If it turns black, the manufacturer is using coal tar as a filler.
