Do You Want The Xbox Controller Go Through A Significant Change?

There is all this focus on a new Dualshock, and it's certainly a polarizing controller. The DS4's touchpad is certainly a nice addition, as any form of additional input seems to give the platform an advantage for more input-heavy games (suppose a game like Skyrim would be much more easier to scroll through, as well as map quick-items onto the touchpad, XCOM navigation also becomes much easier than using an analog stick, etc). The share button also seems to be a big deal for Sony.

But opinions on the Xbox controller have been relatively quiet-- the d-pad may be junky, but aside from that, you don't hear people complain so much about the analog placement, or the triggers, or the size.

Then there's all this focus on Kinect. Do you guys think the Xbox controller will go through any big changes? Will we see a Dualshock-esque successor in that we see minimal or no changes? Is the Xbox controller pretty much perfect for MS?

What I'm actually curious about is if we will see any additional input-- while Sony doesn't have a touchscreen, I think it'd be a smart way to upstage Sony by having an Xbox controller with a small touchscreen in the middle-- all the benefits of the touchpad with added benefit. Will MS add a Share-like button, or do you guys see MS avoiding that?

Personally, I think added input is a huge advantage as controllers can sometimes be too basic, and extra input methods can make multiplatforms seem more favourable. There are some people disappointed with Sony's touchpad, and I think a touchscreen by MS could be a good counter-- but what if MS has no touch controller at all?

Absolutely not. It's the best console controller that has ever been created, why screw with it beyond touching up what's already in place?

How is a touchscreen an added benefit? It's a distraction and a lousy input method.

I wouldn't be mad if they added a small touch screen or something, or let you use it simultaneously with Kinect, but the main thing I wanna see is a better D-pad.

I want it to become a precise and perfect pointer controller with the comfort and function of th 360 pad, so yes. It combined with kinect 2 could be amazing.

Probably. As most of speculated on this very forum, Microsoft is aiming for a media box instead of anything related to pure gaming. So at the very least I'd expect maybe a touch panel for navigating the OS/netflix and perhaps a motion control sensor built into the controller for drawing and music games.

D-Pad and nothing else, it's the perfect controller.

Oh and a wired version of every controller, fuck batteries.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some share-button equivalent on the next controller.
Though with their inevitable Kinect 2.0 push, I don't think they would put much importance on a touch screen.
And fix the damn d-pad.

My body is the controller.

Humorously, I think this is exactly why we won't see any sort of Xbox controller redesign. Any input alteration is likely going to come in the form of Kinect. Not that the Xbox controller needs any sort of addition. As far as gaming goes, it's a pretty damn fine controller.

Aren't there some rumors that it is undergoing some fundamental change?
I thought the only thing rumoured was that it was a "natural evolution," which usually doesn't imply drastic change.

I don't want anything to change except for the D-Pad, and maybe making triggers and buttons pressure-sensitive.

Better DPad and make sure there is a wired version if I can't use my current 360 controllers.
Yup, a wired version is essential IMO. Hope they don't leave that on the cutting room floor if it screws up with Kinect or something.

Better dpad. Otherwise no. Best controller.

If Wii U has taught me anything. DONT put a screen on it. Nothing that makes me look down from the TV. Nothing that gives developers an option to force me to look down at the controller. Sony did it right with the Touchpad.

So, you guys don't care or want a screen/touchpad? With all this influence about mobile gaming, it's interesting Nintendo and Sony followed suit to various degrees. Will MS be better off without it? I don't see the harm in it, but I know people love the 360 controller to fathom change

I mean, assuming costs aside, wouldn't it be smart/beneficial to have a touchscreen over a touchpad? Compromise what Nintendo and Sony is doing by meeting in the middle? Sony certainly seems to be getting praise for being a jack of all trades. All things considered, they could still probably be more affordable than what Sony is offering

Needs better build quality, no drifting sticks, squeaky triggers and sticking bumpers. I don't expect anything major, hopefully a better dpad and rechargeable battery.

Better D-pad, and somehow improve the battery situation. There should not be a giant battery pack protruding from the back.

Also, for those of us constantly switching between PC/multiple 360s: hold down Guide button to turn on controller and console (as normal), or instead hold down Start button to turn on the controller only (not synced to any particular device).

And just use regular screws rather than Torx security bits. Don't make it hard for us to open the controller and clean it.

No, bigger? Sure

More buttons? Sure

D pad redo? I guess but don't care at all.

Other than that any changes make me less likely to get one.

Why the fuck would I want a touch screen? If I want a touch screen I'll go sit in the hot tub and play with my phone.

No huge changes, but I hope they tweak it.

Flat buttons
D-pad
Move the bumpers to a place where the triggers and bumpers can be used simultaneously
Slightly shorter throw on the triggers
Quality control!

I could see them adding an LED touchpanel for easy multimedia app access

As someone mentioned, better build quality is a must.

I've gone through at least 4 or 5 controllers since launch. No problems with my Dual Shock or Wii Mote.

If they still manage to botch the D-pad, I will be so pissed off at them. It's so simple to fix but they refuse to do anything about it, and that attempt they made with the pop put dpad is not much better.
I play FIFA mainly so it's difficult to change tactics on the fly because I always accidentally change to the wrong tactics and I'm forced to fiddle with it to do a simple action.

Seconded all of that. Design controllers that dont f*cking break or start to breakdown as fast as 360 controllers appear to.

Only problem I have with the 360 controller is the awful d-pad and the drift the analog sticks are notorious for. Other than that, it's a great controller.

EDIT - Oh, and it needs to be rechargeable straight out of the box.
