Does anybody still care about a new God of War

I care a lot about GOW 4 and hopefully we'll see it as a PS4 launch title. Ascension interests me less, but I'll be there day one. The collection must be complete.

As long as they keep pumping out quality titles, who cares if they make more GoW titles?

If you don't care for the game, or have moved on, there's no reason to piss on the parade of others who are excited about the title.

Sort of. I'm sick of Kratos and I was pretty down on Ascension when they first announced it, but I've come to terms with this being a stop-gap until they reboot the series on PS4.

Kratos aside, Greek mythology is rich enough to mine for one last game. For example:

Hecate, Nyx, Morpheus, Odysseus, Pan, the Hekatonchires, the Nemean Lion, the Stymphalian birds, Scylla and Charybdis, Circe...that's plenty of content to craft a game around, even if we're getting more obscure than Zeus and minotaurs.

Worth it for a rental or half-price, I guess. But the next game has to shake things up, in terms of both setting and gameplay, or I'm out.

*I suspect the E3 demo took place on the Island of Circe, hence the animal-men

2 is one of my favourite game of all time but 3 was a huge letdown and really turned me off the series. What they showed did look a lot better than 3 but at this point I'd be infinitely more excited if they had made a new IP

I'll be getting it day one. I can't get enough of that series. I understand that some people think its jus a rehash of the same old crap but I love the same old crap. Playing a new addition to the GOW series is always a blast for me even if it does feel very familiar.

I wasn't screaming for another one, but they're fun and the graphics are amazing. So sure, why not? I have a PS3 and it looks like a great game.

Good sense on GAF during E3........I'm pleasantly surprised.

I didn't get to play through 3 completely, but I think I'll take a shot at this one.

I really love the series, it's surely one of my favorites ever. But I think it's more accurate to say that Ascension is 'another God of War' than say it's a new one. In the live demo at Sony's conference, my impression was that they were showing a mod, a skin for God of War 3. It's not something new. It's almost like a long DLC that I will pay 60 dollars to play.

In short words, yes, I really really care about God of War. So much that I would buy I Vita if Sony announced a GoW game for the portable at the conference.
To be fair, this could be said about a lot of sequels, especially runing on the same hardware. It is not often that you'll see a completely step up regarding graphics etc. from one game to another running on the same hardware. It is the smaller changes that does the biggest differences. God of War games will always be the same at its core, the same goes for pretty much every game serie.

I know what you mean though, but i would not call it for being in the vain of DLC at all. It is a brand new game, brand new story, new enemies, new weapons, new magic abilities , and also multiplayer for the first time. It would be the same as calling every new Call of Duty games for being a map pack (i know someone calls it for this actually), but every Call of Duty game is a brand new game.

Yeah I'm into it. Maybe not as much as new exciting things like P-100 or The Last of Us, but I'll definitely play it. Same goes for Pikmin 3. I'm almost always more anxious to get my hands on something new than another entry in a series that I already know I'll enjoy.

The new rage system sounds like it has a lot of potential to reward skillful play. Much better than the paltry bonus orbs given for high combo counts.

Yes, but the next installment better have another mythology.

Sure, I do. For one, the presentation is absolutely peerless for action game titles. The models, the animation, the motion blur, the effects, etc are all just incredible. It's fun to just WATCH people go at it, and even more fun to play it. There's the fixed camera that always gives you the perfect view of the battlefield and the vistas, you never have to fiddle around with it like other action titles, nor is it too close for comfort like LoS often was. There's a sense of scale and epic action adventure that GoW provides and no other action title really does well to compete.

Furthermore, there's some interesting changes to the combat. Maybe not something the casual observer sees on their first glance, but if you pay attention you'll get a picture of how these can change the standard GoW formula. This video does a good job showing and explaining some of these changes.

First, there's the new World Weapon system, which allows you to pick up various weapons you find in the game and are assigned to the O button, combining your traditional blade attacks with new combos and possibalities, varying the speed and approach to combat from area to area. Then, there's the new Teetering system, where Kratos can grab onto enemies with one chain and do various actions while still having some semblance of control. I think that adds another dynamic to the fights, and could lead to some interesting methods to tackle encounters. There's the new time gem there that can speed up, slow down, and otherwise manipulate time. You can already see how they can be used in combat, and SSM is often very good of using these new mechanics in interesting ways for puzzle, platforming, and chain-swinging segments.

And besides from that, there's an entire multiplayer component that from everything I've seen seems to do a very good job of transitioning the wonderful presentation and traditional GoW mechanics into a competitive/cooperative environment, along with adding plenty of new elements such as setting traps or the new escape/heal cooldown mechanics on the various forms of magic or sub-weapons you can find and equip. There's an okish video here, of some journalist fooling around, but you can already get a sense of the kind of objectives, flow of battle, and various things you can do in just this one gamemode on this specific map.

And yeah, I kinda like to see some new areas explored in this series, but it's not like the industry is overflowing with wonderful-looking Greek mythology brawlers with light puzzle/platforming elements. Furthermore, everything I've seen of the game looks like a promising expansion on the series, one last hurrah for the franchise before it moves on to next-gen hardware(kinda similar to another GoW video game series launching in March 2012 as well). I'm looking forward to it.

Great post.

Yes. I've found that the "holy fuk i need this game's first sequel inside of me" feeling usually fades with every series, for me at least (and if the window between the sequels is 2 years, more specifically).

Yeah. I wasn't too excited, but I thought the singleplayer stuff they showed at E3 looked pretty damn awesome. Multiplayer looks unique and fun, but I'm not sure how much I'll play that. GoW epic singleplayer is what gets me excited.

Day 1 for me

I think it looks pretty good, although nowhere near as impressive as GoW3. I'll probably buy it, but it isn't really on the top of my watch list or anything.

I don't really care anymore and I probably won't buy the next one at launch. I'll get it eventually, but I think I'm really done with Kratos after GOW 3. I didn't buy the PSP remakes either because I didn't need to replay them in HD.
If they'd be making radical changes to the franchise, like a new setting or protagonist, I actually do prefer them holding those back till the next generation. So I don't blame them for milking the franchise. It's one of the few ones that still have milk in them and it does look like a competent game.

The combat looks improved which is pleasing but other its definitely one of if not the safest looking sequel shown at E3. I'm hoping its because they are holding off on spoiling stuff like they did with GOW3. This was a very tame demo.

I seem to remember GOW2 had a rather mediocre demo at E3, so its not the be all end all

They really need to change things up though. If they are not going to do it in aesthetics, story or setting then they need to do something with the structure and gameplay. If it turned out it had a totally different Zelda like strucutre, I'd be right on board. It needs some sort of fundamental change.

I personally feel like I know everything I need to about Kratos's story and making every single part of his life into a playable game is just bizarre I think.

That said, the multiplayer looks really good and should be a hit

I'm pretty tired of the hack n' slash genre in general. I'm struggling to muster up interest in any of them including Ascension, Revengeance, etc.

I did enjoy the shit out of GoW 3, but that was due to the insane, unprecedented and unmatched audio-visual experience more than anything. If ascension shows me anything on the scale of crazy epicness that GoW 3 had, then I'll get interested. But until then, goat and elephant men just aren't cutting it

I don't. They haven't really "wowed" me like they did with GoW 3. The set-piece design and intro in that game were so good, and what they showed just seems stale and adds a new gimmick.

I'll buy when bargain-bin bomba happens though.

i'm there day 1, maybe even collector's edition.

its still the god of war i love- amazing graphics, brutality, animation, level design, etc. and they've added new features, big one being multiplayer which is compelling since its different. no other game i think has same kind of multiplayer on consoles. also love additions like bare fisted attacking, picking up and using enemy weapons, tethering, etc.

its gonna be awesome, can't wait to see more :)

i think new mythologies should be pursued under a different title, but perhaps the same team. kinda like what naughty dog is doing with last of us.

I was kinda bored of it but then I saw the water physics. I'll be there for the graphics, it may be strange but thats what I like.

Having just replayed GOW3, I can easily say that the franchise holds no appeal to me anymore. Gameplay has been pretty stale for a while and the new reveal doesn't inspire confidence that there is something here to mix it up.

No, cause it's always the same thing. It was impressive in 2005.

Am was fatigued with the last one. I think this console generation lasting as long as it did has contributed. I want a new consoles already. After buying the first ones i didn't buy Killzone 3, Starhawk, little big planet 2 , Gears 3, Hallo 4, Forza 3, infamous 2 and many others. Too much of the same.

I don't think this has been discussed yet and it was only mentioned briefly, but the bit about changing the design of some key enemies has me the most excited. The elephant enemy (Elephantaur), was the Minotaur and they have also changed Medusa and Cyclops.

He said the elephant had influence from the skull with the hole, but it could also be Hindu influenced which means this game might have more of a different mythology theme than most people think right now. Hype.

Day 1.

I love the series. At this point it's like asking do people still care about Halo, Gears, etc.

Last game sold 5M, it's not going anywhere.

What is this the sixth God of War? The seventh if you count Collection? That's far too many for a franchise that saw it's first release in 2005 and still uses the same basic gameplay. Either mix it up tremendously or better yet, give it a rest.

So in short, no. I don't care for another God of War.

It looks like God of War to me. I don't think they need to change the mythology. It's not GoW without Kratos and the Greeks. What would be nice is if they went a more open world route or more like something Darksiders or Soul Reaver rather than stick to the more linear format. I guess I'm asking for what some people would call more of a "Zelda-ish" style.

except they DID revise the gameplay so...

I'm so burnt out with God of War, Gears of War, New Super Mario Bros, and COD. I never want to see those franchises again.

At least with Halo they have made a real effort to freshen it up and make it a completely new completely different adventure.

I kinda thought they were gonna mix it up more. I thought the art style would look a lot different too. Kinda looks the same.

I'd be interested in a new God of War that moves onto a different mythology. Ascension doesn't interest me one bit, I've seen it all before.

I stopped caring about God of War after II turned Kratos from a sympathetic figure seeking redemption in an albeit violent manner into a raging idiot. I thought GoW was a perfect modern Greek tragedy, with an antihero and an imperfect victory. He slays the god that saved his life but cost him his soul, he is forgiven for his transgressions, but he is left with the nightmare of his deeds. The story was engaging, the pacing was excellent. The gameplay was fun. The levels were beautiful. And the music was great.

And then in 2, it all goes to pot. Kratos is no longer sympathetic, the gods are equally ridiculous, and by the end of it, I just didn't care anymore.

God of War 1 - best. game. ever.*
God of War 2 - meh.

And that's when I checked out of the "series." I still replay the original from time to time, though. Love it.

(*not really ever ever, but dern good.)
