God of War Sons of Sparta, set earliest in the timeline of the original trilogy, follows the exploits of a young Kratos and his brother Deimos

God of War: Sons of Sparta is a strange product. It is a spin-off of a spin-off, a game that downshifts the tempo of a saga known for screaming at the top of its lungs. It is an experience I would define as 'God of War Low-Fi.'

It doesn't have a spectacular hook, nor does it reinvent the genre's wheel. In fact, its somewhat clunky controls hold it back from the excellence of the Metroidvania greats. But it has heart. It features solid gameplay foundations, a story that respects its characters, and an undeniable ability to hook you with its 'explore, upgrade, kill' loop.

Kratos fans will still find something to interest them, as will those looking for an accessible Metroidvania without too many rough edges. Those looking for a chapter that will leave their mark will, however, feel like an opportunity only partially exploited.

God of War Sons of Sparta is a great God of War origin game, but just an okay Metroidvania.

ReGame It - Taha Omar - Arabic - 8.5 / 10
Shifting the series into a different style is a bold move that highlights its flexibility and ability to evolve without losing its identity. It delivers a new experience that blends its legacy with refined gameplay while exploring an uncharted phase of Kratos' life, opening a fresh direction for the series.

República DG - Ruancarlo Silva - Portuguese - 7.6 / 10
God of War: Sons of Sparta works well as a prequel to Kratos' story; however, the game stumbles on key pillars of the metroidvania genre and suffers from several technical issues.

Uagna - Lorenzo Bologna - Italian - 7.4 / 10
God of War: Sons of Sparta is a title that should be analysed from two perspectives: as part of the series and as a Metroidvania game. While Mega Cat Studios' experience is interesting from a narrative point of view, Santa Monica's 2D work fails to reach the artistic and conceptual heights of other well-known milestones. As a result, the product is recommended for those who love the franchise and are not looking for a deep and innovative Metroidvania.

WayTooManyGames - Leonardo Faria - 7.5 / 10
God of War: Sons of Sparta is a very interesting prologue to the series as a whole, and a welcome return to the franchise's original Greek setting, but as a metroidvania… I mean, it's good, but it's nothing I haven't seen and played dozens of times before, especially in a post-Silksong and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown world.

XboxEra - Jesse Norris - 7 / 10
God of War Sons of Sparta has a weak start, solid middle, and strong ending. If you can get through a tedious first few hours you will eventually be rewarded with solid combat and an emotional story.

But everyone said it was so great! Lmao. I figured it'd be pretty alright, which isn't bad, but too many people were attempting to sell it harder.

Of course opinions and all that. I'm WELL aware, especially as someone that doesn't care for reviews and review numbers. I just saw people talking about this like it was the second coming, lol. It felt excessive.

Just a middle of the road Metroidvania, propped up by the God of War IP. I'll check it out when it comes to PC.

Baffling.

The game is legit on par with blasphemous in terms of quality.

Things that suck, an I'm 18 hours in roughly:
-No teleport back to Sparta. Lots of other places but this one missing is odd.
-Yes there is times the foreground and background don't contrast enough but it's rare.
-Game needed some kind of higher budget story exposition moments. Hollow knight has cut scenes, blasphemous too. Two sprites just talking, even with good animations just feel cheap when considering the price of the game.

That said the game is fanastic. 8.5/10 from me so far unless they fumble the ending.

It does look like shit.

It looks like a mobile game. From 2011.

God of War became popular due to awesome spectacle/scale and jaw-dropping graphics.
You really couldn't make this up. They're rating the game a 70 while the average is 73 = OMFG Xbox shills deliberately tanked the score to make it look bad!!!!!

Only 30% critics recommend. Ouch.
I have not seen a lower critic recommendation on a 70s MC game.

Even Romeo is dead which is a 70MC game have a 60% critic recommendation.

I'll give it a go in a deeeep sale. Solid 7 out of 10 by the sounds of it.

Not a product I would expect Sony to get behind for what is probably their biggest ip. Outside of Horizon of course. Can't forget Humans baby that we all love.

It really doesn't, also it's a pixel art game like what are we saying?

Hyperbole around games really has got out of control.

The forgotten game in the franchise.
But it was a bit of a weird game, wasn't it ? I mean when it released, after the super-glorious III, this episode goes way back before, and it is a bit more of the same as III gameplay-wise, but not really epic.

I haven't finished it though, I should give it a try on PS+ cloud streaming

I really liked it on PS3. It was a bit smaller scope than GOW3 but retained the same gameplay system with some twists.

It was also chronologically the first game in the timeline (before sons of Sparta released).

So, just an okay game? We should probably see the sales figures soon, if people are even interested in a 2D GOW or not.

Nothing about the graphics or the gameplay made me think this is a GoW game but in 2D, it just looks like generic indie-slop

Still so funny that they had this as their last showing for what was otherwise a good presentation. Like rolling out a pig with a wig and make-up at the end of the night at a strip club. 😂

Could have been midway. They didn't have any thing to show with GOW remake anyway. There were plenty of other games that could have been more exciting but the end, but that's me.

Game looks mid AF.

Why no 2D GoW with peak Kratos (GoW 1-3), bloody and violent as a motherfucker, with beat em up mechanics like the old games, or Shinobi or something.

Never listen to the fanboys.

Game is very mid and clearly inferior to all the major metroidvanias released in the last few years

There are several metroidvanias already out on the market before Sons of Sparta, many of which sell at lower prices while offering much more content. And locking co-op behind beating the game solo is a choice...

Looks pretty bland, and the reviews seem to confirm it's nothing special.
I might try it when/if it comes to Ps+, but for now there are plenty of other better looking (not to mention cheaper) Metroidvanias on my to play list.

Most of the defense force for this game comes across like:
"Would you be interested in this $15 Greek themed Metroidvania we just released on Steam?"
"Lol no, I don't like indie slop"
"Sorry I misspoke, I meant to say this $30 game that's published by Sony and has God of War in the title"
