My thing with newer God of War games is boss fight amount and design has gone down, and the puzzles got dumb in Ragnarok. They're still fun, the formula was getting stale with Ascension, but I prefer God of War 1-3 overall.

Atreus journey to Jotünheim should never be in the game, it kills pacing completely. I'm replaying the game now and in this aspect - it's bad.

The Ironwood section sucked ass too.

I don't have an axe to grind against the guy. He was the game/creative director of two GOW games. But his last great game was released in 2007 and he is now a youtuber focused on criticising said franchise, making use of clickbait images and etc.

So I'm pretty sure he will make 20 videos about how the remakes suck for not including some background vase that was integral to the lore of the original games or something

I just watched his GOTY 2025 videos and he loves and is plenty enthusiastic about games he enjoyed.

Are you listening to Jaffe talk about politics or games?

I only really listen to Jaffe via LSM and don't really watch his YouTube channel or anything (sorry Jaffe).

I like listening to the episodes of Sacred Symbols where it's Colin and davidjaffe . I rarely hear Jaffe get overly political, and even if he does I don't base who I do or don't listen to based off of their political beliefs as I don't want to live in an echo chamber where I will only listen to people that agree with me which is a sad way to live life IMO.

I think that is part of the magic of LSM to me. Colin and Chris for example or Colin and Jaffe are very different politically but they don't care and are very close still/have great chemistry. It's a group that may think differently but know that politics aren't everything.

2D metroidvania has become the new slop, it's really the equivalent of open world action/adventure in the AAA field. You can open a factory and make a thousand games like that because at this point you can design them in autopilot.

Time to move on really. I would like for them to do small games, but to actually experiment and do something that challenge players because they always want to play the same crap all the time it's becoming really annoying.

Or maybe it's just a genre that isn't for you

I personally feel like it's the best time for him to talk as it's connected to what he's worked on in the past. But yeah, I think it's easy to tell how the content will go for the most part.

I mean, he was the lead designer and director of the original, can you really blame him? It doesn't invoke any feelings of the original games at all. I see what you're getting at, and I'm glad you enjoy it. But I think I'm with Jaffe on this one. Maybe I'll check it out on the cheap at some point, but I don't know, I'm not rushing to do so. When a rumored GoW Metroidvania was being thrown around I wasn't expecting it to have a gigantic budget or anything, but I definitely expected it to be more than what we got.
