i don't get this. people actually post on Facebook about the parties they are at, the jobs they landed etc..? why?

some weeks or months from now when i'm on Facebook i will just use it to msg friends and share links and whatnot. why on earth would i put a status update saying what job i got or whatever? bizarre IMO. seems so arbitrary. do a lot people really feel the need to share every detail of their life? not even caring if it makes others jealous?

I landed a job on Friday and posted it on Facebook. Not sure why you wouldn't. I'm overseas, away from my family and usual friends so it's certainly the quickest way to let them know what's going on in my life. And they're my friends and family, so they're at least pretending to be interested.

Nope. Didn't even come close to it. I was extra careful. Several of my friends now 'like it' too so it's obviously a mistake.

And why would you NOT post about getting a new job? Unless your friends are not real-life friends, it's logical that you would post it. So one of my friends deleted his facebook and now i'm only tagged in two pictures.

There was a really short period of time where I felt a little bad when I went on facebook, only because it seems like a lot of my cousins and old friends and stuff are starting families and having children, and I really wanted to and I knew my wife really really wanted to start. But, we're not well off enough to start yet. We'd rather wait.

And then I realized that pretty literally 99% of my friends and cousins are actually in the same spot as me as far as life. They work crappy jobs, probably graduated with a worthless degree, and just aren't doing that well off. So I have nothing to be jealous of. We're all in the same crappy sinking boat together. And the ones I was jealous of having children for that very short period of time are worse off because they're in that crappy boat with me and now have a mouth to try and feed, too.

As far as partying and stuff I never really had that many friends that went out and partied, so I think I have maybe one or two people that post once in a while that they're drinking or whatever so I really don't care.

I never complain about Internet sites and generally try not to complain about silly things but what a ridiculous feature.

It did make me laugh though!

Lets just hope no family member saw it! Thankfully I have groups and privacy settings ramped up so there was a certain element of damage control.

i use it mostly for keeping in touch with industry friends who i don't see in person so much now that i'm old and cbf'd go to everybody's events every weekend. plus i use it as a promotional tool, it's nice that i can direct my promotions to the people who care and we can chat about shit, and i don't feel like i'm spamming uninterested people. so it works out fine.

contrary to what you'd expect, most of my fb friends are people i know well personally, and the bulk of us are over 30.

in short, i got over hating it some time ago and respect it for the useful tool that it can be.

Looks like the OP is onto something. Found an article this morning all about Facebook leading to a new form of depression in teens.

With in-your-face friends’ tallies, status updates and photos of happy-looking people having great times, Facebook pages can make some kids feel even worse if they think they don’t measure up.
