Does Killzone deserve the hype it's getting?

im definitely not buying into the hype. I did with the first game, but no this time. Guerilla doesn't know how to code AI...until they learn they'll be a mediocre developer

And some clarification on the first post. I wasn't just talking about Killzone 1 when I said that, I was talking about their other game, "Shellshock: Nam '67" too, which was terrible.

that i agree with!

No, I didn't claim to, it was a rhetorical question. If there was a convincing reason posted in this thread for me to believe in the hype I would change my mind, but I'm not seeing it.

Hmmm, there are a ton of hyped games which I dont see why people are going to be amazing...dont see me making threads about it though

No, there's no "relative to the hype" quality marker. That's not how you fucking judge games. Is it good, or is it bad... or is it somewhere in between? Just 'cause some random magazine decided to compare it to HALO does not therefore mean that because it was not as good as HALO, and did not sell like HALO, that it is 'terrible.'
Alright, I'm not going to dispute that point. Killzone was not terrible, it was mediocre.
Ok, now that's been sorted. I don't think the sequel to a mediocre game should be hyped as one of a platform's biggest titles.

So beyond the aesthetics what makes this game so special to deserve the hype? Especially when we haven't heard much about the game features.

Does it have drivable vehicles? What kind of multiplayer does it have? How is it different?

That's fine!

I think that the single greatest looking console game of all time should be hyped this much, because graphics are extremely important to gaming experiences and I know Killzone 2 is guaranteed to deliver here now!

We've only seen the graphics so it kind of deserve to get the hype on graphics, although some can take it overboard. The overall game? We'll see about that.

To me, it's just another damn FPS so die die die!

Again, I just don't see why this needed it's own thread. Frankly, it smacks of self importance. You claim to have an open mind yet I fail to see what would convince you otherwise.

This should have been a post in one of the other 'official' threads.

The "hype" is pretty subdued, IMO. Theres a big unveiling thread and then a few here and there like with the BBC article. Fans of the game & series post in said threads and are happy. So whats the problem?

Agreed. When people are starting threads left, right and center regarding things like, oh, I don't know, water effects then I can see your point. But even then these fans are doing their own thing in threads that appeal to other fans. If it doesn't appeal tp you don't go in.

The Killzone unveiling thread is a monster (135 pages at last count), it's amazing to me how many people are furious that it's still going. Like posters are contributing to the thread just to antagonise them.

You're exactly right. You judge games based on their own merits and against the quality of their peers. So compared to other console FPS's of the time, I found Killzone 1 to be pretty terrible. Of course, everyone has their own opinion.

Killzone for PSP was actually pretty good, though it's not an FPS.

?

Why not? I don't understand your point, and that's even after I understand your trolling agenda. It seems like it's going to be a fantastic game just going by shallow impressions, so why should we hold it against a game which had a poor predecessor? Maybe Guerilla Games should have started a new franchise to severe all ties with KZ, but that wasn't necessary. And if you want to shift the criticism from being franchise-based (KZ) to developer-based (Guerilla Games), then would it have helped if GG were disbanded and its staff entirely absorbed under Sony Santa Monica to produce what we now see as KZ2?

I just know nothing good is going to come out from this thread.

That's fine, however he said "universally agreed" to be terrible - which is not the case critically, and was not the case among many, many gamers. Most agreed it was very average, but the mechanics in place were extremely solid... it was simply marred by many technical issues. I also found its world one of the most compelling amongst FPS of the time; they have a really rich wealth of material to draw from around the foundation they created.

Yes, I started this thread because I'm just that important, and all of gaf needs to know my opinion.

:lol No. Even the title is a question, that means I would want an answer, and I'm sure people are more interested in the answers than what I'm saying. I provoked a discussion, in a forum called "gaming discussion", I didn't think there would be anything wrong with that.

what....? you want the game to look worse than it does...? Gears looks great, but Graw...? haha

Where did I say I want it to look worse? I'm just saying its not blowing me away as I think other games look just as good if not better. Also GRAW 2 looks great. Check out the smoke and explosions in that game. They are phenomenal and you're either blind or have never experienced it on a great TV or monitor.

MP2 was also critically acclaimed, def more so than KZ but almost everyone in GAF says it "killed the franchise for them" and cite it for thier lack of MP3 hype.

It doesn't read that way sweetheart.

While I think GRAW 2 looks very good, I too have to laugh at the idea that it's even close to what Killzone 2 is achieving. The technical aspects - specifically lighting and animation - are so far ahead of comparable games that it's almost sick.

But, to each their own.

That's also by no means any consensus. Of course there's going to be a variety of views. I don't think Metroid Prime II is as good as the first, but I think it's phenomenal and one of the best last-gen games still.

Hay guys I am hyped for the next episode of Monk! Now let me explain in detail why!
Hay guys I can't wait for my tuna sandwich! Now let me explain in detail why!
Hay guys I can't wait for the next album by Aphex Twin! Now let me explain in detail why!

This is the same question people tried to ask last year about Gears. "Does Gears deserve the hypy it's getting" and then it was compared it to Brute Force and .killswitch.

Which is odd, as there's a different sense of logic in that thinking (Gears) and this (Killzone)... Gears dev budget was only $10m for instance.

Interest is relative and subjective, that's basically it. You can ask this hype question for any game of interest and there'd be answers from people about why they dont think the game is interesting or good. But thats a boring answer and probably not the one you're looking for ;)

Killzone wasn't terrible. It was just plagued with a weak hardware.
Killzone Liberation was prolly one of the best handheld games i've played
They managed to make one of the most impressive things to date, technical terms and in the way that, IT LOOKED FUCKIN AMAZIN!!

So yeah, it deserves even more hype then it had before. But if you ask me, somehow that hype lowered.

It has great first person motion, including a seemingly functional first person cover system. It also features one of the most iconic and threatening enemies in the history of video games, and in this one that hostile and almost monstrous nature actually seems to come through well. I wouldn't blindly buy into this, but so far it seems like Guerrilla has finally managed to make good on the awesome potential that was so clumsily handled in the PS2 game.

Graw 2 is like a step or two behind K2

Gears was an exception. Most games don't experience the same success.

i agree about Heavenly Sword too

their last game was ... kung fu chaos?
See, the thing is, people have actually played Heavenly Sword and can judge. For example the press impressions from playing the game and the short demo on PSN.

No one who has played Killzone 2 (if there are any outside GG) are allowed to talk about it. ALL we have to go on now, from a gameplay perspective, is their previous efforts.

The graphics are fantastic though. I understand why people would be interested or even optimistic the game after seeing how good it looks. But I think we should wait for people to play it first, or to play it ourselves, to see if it's actually, ya know, good.

Just sayin.

Just let them get hyped and if they end up dissapointed then... thats what happens.

The problems with the original Killzone can certainly be solved by added development time and more powerful hardware. That, and Killzone 2 has some really cool ideas behind it other than OMG THE GRAPHICS.

It wouldn't be hype now if people actually experienced the thing, now doesl it? This applies to anything that is hyped.

Does it deserve the hype? Yeah, why not, it's Sony's flagship FPS title. You can make whatever arguments you want about how inept GG is by their past games but they wouldn't apply to KZ2 because of the huge internal shift in developers since then. Either way, they made a very impressive graphical showcase and showed some stuff that was cool such as the gun/Helghast animations and the first person cover mechanic. Vehicles were also confirmed, and I'm wondering if they'll break first person view while driving (they are going for total immersion as evidenced by the lack of HUD) or if they'll just keep it first person while you drive like GT5's in car camera.

Also, rumor is the multiplayer aspect is really something different so I'm interested to see what happens with that.

Any game with this kind of budget deserves some attention, IMO.

Oh please. Even if no one outside Guerrilla would have gotten to play it, you'd still be able to decipher quite a bit from watching the game being played in front of you. You'd know if certain key issues in the PS2 version were still present in the game, and so far it seems as if most of those issues are absent from this game.

Notice if the "if" there though? Turns out that a few people outside of Guerrilla have in fact been allowed to play it, with N'Gai Croal being the first to report on it.

No one man is enough to stop the gaf hype train.

It needs to be body slammed. And they removed that glitch in the GBA version.

I wouldn't call it hype, rather attention. Well, until E3 2k7

Honestly, I think a lot of people (random gamers or websites) were looking forward to killzone to see wether it would fail miserably. People that had faith in it are mostly fans of the franchise. Now that they've somewhat delivered so far (because it would be lying saying they didn't), I think yeah, it deserves some hype. Just try to imagine what kind of heavy pressure the guys at GG had in the few weeks post E3.

Now, judging by what we saw, well... it was only a few minutes on stage demo.
But graphics are nice, lighting is awesome, animation rocks, atmosphere is really good and unique, and gameplay seems to be good so far. The cover system looks fun and well done. And we also have very positive impressions from N'gai.

So, given what they have shown @ E3, and what they went through (CGI fiasco and Tretton trying to fool everyone etc), then 2 years of black out and, like everyone that was tripping GG up, I think it deserves some hype, yeah :p

Look, I get what you are saying here but KZ2 hype is what it is and questioning it will only lead to conflict and strife. Nothing will change. You see, sometimes a game's hype is somewhat tied to the console that it is exclusive to. It becomes not just a game but also a big chess piece in the "system wars" and the hype is affected accordingly. I want to be clear: Fans from all systems have done this with games in the past and I believe that's what's happening here. I'm sure there are many who think the game will be grand regardless of "allegiances" but we have to admit it's importance in the "wars" is a factor.

the Guerilla team making KZ2 is now made up of many more people and from what i hear, they hired like crazy and got some pretty hot people working in the team.

The trailer looks nice, the concerns i have as a rabid anti Sony hater would be :

1) is this just nicely put together footage of FEAR style body reactions
2) how exactly is this going to play
3) have they got some good AI coders

For me, point 3 is what killed Killzone more than anything.
But the good sign is was they were at least ambitious with KZ1 , so hopefully the hardware can match their vision this time.

Does it deserve the hype? Why not? Looks like it could be a good game. Given some of the garbage that gets hyped these days, i don`t see why KZ shouldn`t get a bit of loving.

I think PS3 is a major disaster, don't own one, thought Killzone 1 was mediocre but even I'm hyped for Killzone 2.

Ok, the graphics are good, I think we've established that.

But if any other game was announced by a developer who's last efforts (excluding Killzone Liberation, which is pretty good) were agreed universally to have been terrible, would people start hyping it? I just don't see the basis of this.

I'm not saying it's not going to be good (as they've proven they can, on an off chance, make a good game), I'm just saying it's the sort of game people should be cautious about, given the developers track record. Yet, people seem to be head over heels over it, despite no one having played it, no one having given impressions, etc.

Explain yourself, gaf.

Deserve has nothing to do with it.
