It will support Variable Refresh Rate by being HDMI 2.1 compliant.
Though I want to say I don't know if FreeSync is something separate. HDMI 2.1 compliance probably does not mean your PS5 will deliver frames just in time if you hook it up to an old FreeSync monitor.HDMI 2.2 Specification Overview
HDMI® Specification 2.2 is the most recent update of the HDMI specification and supports a range of higher video resolutions and refresh rates including 8K60 and 4K120, and resolutions up to 10K.www.hdmi.org
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
One of the highlights from the HDMI 2.1 specification's multiple gaming and media features is Variable Refresh Rate. VRR reduces or eliminates lag, judder and frame tearing for more fluid and better detailed gameplay. VRR enables a gaming source such as a console or computer to deliver video frames as fast as it can, which in many cases is slower than the normal static refresh rate.

Exactly. FreeSync is from AMD, not from the HDMI consortium, which is why I wouldn't count on the PS5 supporting FreeSync.Freesync is AMDs technology for VRR so I wouldn't be surprised if the PS5 had it.

No. The number of screens that support the HDMI 2.1 implemented standard VRR is very low now. A few TV's and pretty much no PC Monitors.Don't many screens that support freesync also support VRR?
Don't many screens that support freesync also support VRR?
Every screen that supports freesync has VRR
Not every screen that has VRR has official freesync support (through it's just amd way of pushing all blame to display makers if problems emerge)
It is a problem, because your average shitty FreeSync monitor does not have HDMI 2.1 which is what the PS5 uses to offer you VRR.Then the PS5 not having Freesync isn't really a problem if I understand you correctly.

VRR != HDMI 2.1 VRR
I don't think anyone can say for certain but I would say yes. My guess.Ok so buying a new screen is required to take full advantage of the PS5 if it isn't HDMI 2.1.

It's not gonna GSync, it's not gonna do FreeSync, but VRR via HDMI 2.1? That it will do.
But yeah I can't rule out FreeSync tbh. Just guessing.
Because 120hz modes were not standard of older HDMI versions they varied in implementation, Xbox supports most of the 120hz modes but not all of them. On top of that 144Hz displays dont always support 120Hz either, really they should add 144Hz output but capped to 120fps to make it easy for people to just buy any 144Hz monitor.
Do not buy ANY display without HDMI 2.1I'm just asking because I'm thinking of getting a second monitor and it's good to know what I should get.
Having a HDMI 2.1 port on your device is no guarantee of VRR sadly. Always check if the new TV supports all features as well as having HDMI 2.1 before you buy.Do not buy ANY display without HDMI 2.1
Yes, HDMI 2.1 is gonna cost you, but it's for PS5 so it's fine.
