Does PS5 Support Freesync ?

It will support Variable Refresh Rate by being HDMI 2.1 compliant.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
One of the highlights from the HDMI 2.1 specification's multiple gaming and media features is Variable Refresh Rate. VRR reduces or eliminates lag, judder and frame tearing for more fluid and better detailed gameplay. VRR enables a gaming source such as a console or computer to deliver video frames as fast as it can, which in many cases is slower than the normal static refresh rate.

Though I want to say I don't know if FreeSync is something separate. HDMI 2.1 compliance probably does not mean your PS5 will deliver frames just in time if you hook it up to an old FreeSync monitor.

i hope VRR will be OS supported and not a per game thing on both console
if it's not the case it will be bad

Unsure at this time for Freesync, HDMI 2.1 VRR should be in and nothing stops the PS5 from supporting Freesync on the hardware level.

Don't many screens that support freesync also support VRR?
No. The number of screens that support the HDMI 2.1 implemented standard VRR is very low now. A few TV's and pretty much no PC Monitors.

The standard free sync is available on tons of 2.0 PC Monitors on the market and a few select TV's
So op is asking if freesync will be supported by the PS5, so customers who want that feature don't need to necessarily buy new devices.
As it's AMD hardware it shouldn't be much of a problem to implement it. In theory at least.

Every screen that supports freesync has VRR
Not every screen that has VRR has official freesync support (through it's just amd way of pushing all blame to display makers if problems emerge)

Then the PS5 not having Freesync isn't really a problem if I understand you correctly.

Ok so buying a new screen is required to take full advantage of the PS5 if it isn't HDMI 2.1.
I don't think anyone can say for certain but I would say yes. My guess.

It's not gonna GSync, it's not gonna do FreeSync, but VRR via HDMI 2.1? That it will do.
But yeah I can't rule out FreeSync tbh. Just guessing.

I hope so. VRR doesn't cover it for pre-HDMI 2.1 monitors and some TVs that did support freesync, so it would be nice to have, my PC monitor had Freesync over HDMI before HDMI 2.1 VRR.

It supports VRR, something that started with FreeSync.

For HDMi versions below 2.1, XB was said to support "non-standard" FreeSync over HDMI, PS could too.

I'm just asking because I'm thinking of getting a second monitor and it's good to know what I should get.

The PS5 does not support Freesync, Sony have only stated support for HDMI-VRR as part of HDMI 2.1 spec.

To work with Freesync would require Sony to gain Freesync certification and test against the large number of Freesync HDMI 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 displays on the market.

Because 120hz modes were not standard of older HDMI versions they varied in implementation, Xbox supports most of the 120hz modes but not all of them. On top of that 144Hz displays dont always support 120Hz either, really they should add 144Hz output but capped to 120fps to make it easy for people to just buy any 144Hz monitor.

Sony also didn't support 1440p as an output resolution on the PS4 Pro that may follow with the PS5 being HDMI 2.1 120Hz only for 1080p and 2160p.

So buying any 120Hz capable PC monitor now is a risk unless Sony state they support Freesync otherwise your better off waiting until HDMI 2.1 monitors come onto the market Asus has announced some down to 27" in size but I doubt they will be released this year.

Xbox supports most Freesync monitors out there but always take a look at the monitor manual to see if it has 120hz output, if you want a costly but nice Freesync 120hz monitor the BenQ EX2780Q is a good model with decent built in speakers and an IR remote which is very rare for PC monitors.

If your 144Hz monitor doesnt support 120Hz throw it away.

Ive never even heard of a monitor that doesnt allow you to run at a lower standard Hz rate.
What monitors have you seen that are 144Hz but dont have 120Hz support as well?

Do not buy ANY display without HDMI 2.1
Yes, HDMI 2.1 is gonna cost you, but it's for PS5 so it's fine.
Having a HDMI 2.1 port on your device is no guarantee of VRR sadly. Always check if the new TV supports all features as well as having HDMI 2.1 before you buy.

That's correct!
Eyes open!
An HDMI 2.1 port alone doesn't guarantee full bandwidth or VRR.
So watch out lads.
