Does the PS4 Pro Play UHD Blurays?

Another confirmation

This is crazy fuckup if true

Actually, scratch that, I forgot the Xbox One S is $299 and offers 4K Blu-Ray, makes this whole thing absolutely baffling. I wish the games press wasn't so worthless that someone at the show can't get a completely iron-clad citable source that can confirm or deny this.

The show hasn't been over that long and the Sony people are all probably in interviews that have been scheduled for two weeks and the information will take time to get out. Now that this is going around I'm sure every single interviewer is going to be asking for the rest of the day.

Who even has the bandwidth to stream 4K. Data caps will get you. Just makes the conference more disappointing. My train has derailed.

This has got to me some sort of communication flub. It just wasn't specifically mentioned in the meting and some people took it as gospel. That's what I think. There is no reason to omit a 4k blu-ray player.

This is the biggest Sony fuck up this gen.
Maybe for message boards and console warz. The consumer has spoken for years that physical media is dying. UHD is an incredibly small niche inside a niche that never overtook its predecessor.

Sony valued price over a medium that will never be mainstream.

i think this is the first time an unprecedented partnership (sony+netflix) is actually unprecedented

wtf lol

Expecting people to only STREAM 4k content seems crazy. Waiting for official confirmation.

I have very high bandwidth internet and streaming a 4k movie vs. watching a UHD 4k Disk, it is still a lot cleaner watching the disk. You still get some artifacts while streaming, especially with the bandwidth requirements needed for 4k movies w/HDR. It just seems weird that Sony just spent so much time explaining 4k and HDR and then not include the best way to watch 4k content.

Sony said during the press conference that the Pro is aimed at 4k enthusiasts and/or hardcore gamers. How can the Pro meet the needs of 4k enthusiasts without a 4k Blu-Ray player?

So if I wanted a compete 4k console based experience, I'd need a PS4 Pro for games and streaming, and an Xbox One S or stand alone 4k bluray player?

Damn... That is an amazing omission. Must have been cut to reach a certain price point.

If Xbox Scorpio come in under $499, damn... That will be interesting to see.

Microsoft must be smiling today.

I wonder who ran their focus groups? Was it Rasmussen? Because if this is aimed at the hardcore.....who inhabit NeoGAF.....the reaction here vs. PS Meeting 2013 is night and day. Read the forums Sony, you done fucked up.

This was me the first time I heard about Neo and this is me x100 for the last hour. Abusrdly pointless exercise.

wait, so this means that any title that is ps4 go optimized will be standard 1080p on disc, then you download a patch and it becomes 4k?

Expecting people to continue consuming content the way they've now made it clear they prefer is crazy?

What's crazy is people in here talking like UHD is going to be an actual big thing when really they just wanted a ton of extra value for the same price. I'll take the $399 instead personally.

It makes no sense at all: I will wait for official confirmation.

The console has a recent Blu-ray drive with a Polaris GPU with HDR Support

It's absurd not to allow UHD BD playback

Eh, having just bought a 4K TV, this was a huge part of the value proposition to me.

Wasn't blown away by the presentation but still would've bought for UHD Blu-ray playback. Now I'm not sure what I'll do.

Such bullshit...

But after my initial rage... I realize I really just don't buy anymore discs... convenience of streaming > buying a disc to play movies.

The last time I bought a disc was 3 years ago lol

Why on Earth would Sony be going primarily after the 'hardcore' who are probably already on a PC anyways.

What do you think Joe Consumer cares more about: UHD or a bigger price tag?

Wait till next year when Sony releases the PS4 Pro 2 which has a UHD player and better specs to compete with Scorpio. :)

Xbox One S includes it at $299, no need to even bring Scorpio into the discussion here to see how myopic and idiot this is as a move by Sony.

It's going after a segment at the higher end of the spectrum. People who already invested in pricy UHD w/HDR screens. It's not a huge jump to imagine those are the kind of people who are buying the admittedly niche UHD Blu-rays.
